Abstract

Pesisir Timur Pulau Weh (PTPW) is a water natural reserve conservation area located in the eastern part of Weh Island. The condition of coral substrates in PTPW has suffered a lot of damage based on bleaching cases that have hit Sabang waters in 2016. Coral conditions can be measured by looking at the abundance of fish indicators of the Chaetodontidae group. Therefore, this study aimed to measure coral conditions and the abundance of Chaetodontidae coral fish, as well as analyze the relationship between the percentage of coral cover and the abundance of Chaetodontidae coral fish. Data of coral were collected using the Point Intercept Transect method with a length of 50 meters, while the abundance of fish used the Underwater Visual Census technique and the Belt Transect method with a length of 50 meters and a total belt width of 5 meters. The results showed that the coral conditions in PTPW were in poor to fair condition with the highest cover at The Sumur Tiga site (36.83%) and the lowest at The Ujung Kareung site (11.5%). The highest abundance of Chaetodontidae fish was found at Ujung Seuke site (1253.3 ind/ha) and the lowest was found at Anoi Itam site (186.7 ind/ha). The results of the correlation analysis between the percentage of coral cover and the abundance of Chaetodontidae coral fish showed a positive relationship (r = 0.482), but it was not significant (p>0.05), and the regression equation obtained Y = 17.16x + 166.52 with a determination coefficient of 18.3%, which indicated that the correlation between the two variables was very weak.

Abstract

The low resistance of wood as a frame material for traditional fishing boats against splashing sea water, humidity, and high-temperature fluctuations was studied in this study by adding coconut coir fiber to wood paint, where this mixture will become an anti-weathering composite material. To make compatibility between the fibers from coir which are water-absorbing (hydrophilic) and alkyd paints which are water-repellent (hydrophobic), the author gives special treatment to the coco fibers through an acetone pre-treatment process and hot alkali (hot alkali treatment) by soaking fiber in 10% high-temperature sodium hydroxide NaOH solution. Soaking in this solution is able to modify fibers that have a rough surface and reduce hydrogen bonding thereby improving the interfacial bond between the fiber and the filler in the composite. The results obtained were that the addition of fiber with a weight fraction of 3.40% to the alkyd paint matrix made the composite the most optimal anti-weathering coating.

Abstract

This study was designed to address the issue of low active participation and learning outcomes among sixth-grade students at MIN III Pontianak in the IPAS subject through the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. The background for this research was the persistence of a teacher-centered learning process, which led to suboptimal student engagement. Applying the Classroom Action Research (CAR) methodology based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, this study was carried out over two cycles involving 35 participants. Data collected through observations and tests indicated significant progress: student learning activity increased from 65% in the first cycle to 85% in the second cycle. Meanwhile, the rate of classical learning mastery also jumped from 45.71% to 82.86%. Consequently, it was concluded that the PBL model is an appropriate instructional solution for tackling the problem of low student involvement and for shifting the learning paradigm towards a more active and student-centered approach in elementary education. It is recommended that teachers, particularly at the elementary level, adopt the PBL model to create participatory learning while actively assuming the role of facilitators to ensure equitable engagement from all students. This implementation would be more effective with support from the school administration through facilitating training and providing relevant learning resources. Furthermore, for future researchers, there is an opportunity to develop this study by investigating the impact of PBL more deeply on higher-order thinking skills or by testing it in the contexts of different subjects and educational levels to broaden the validity of the findings.

Abstract

The older adults are a vulnerable group facing physical, social, and economic health challenges that impact their quality of life. Information on the quality of life of the older adults in rural Indonesia is still limited, so this study aims to identify predictors of quality of life in the older adults in the working area of the Dusun Tengah Community Health Center, Lubuk Sandi District, Seluma Regency, Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. This quantitative cross-sectional study involved 60 elderly individuals who met the inclusion criteria. The research instruments included quality of life with WHOQOL-BREF, activities of daily living with the Barthel Index, ambulation with CAS, mobility with the timed up and go (TUG) Test, and lower limb muscle strength with the 30-second STS Test. The results showed that age, employment status, income, walking ability, mobility, lower limb muscle strength, and activities of daily living were significantly associated with quality of life (p < 0.05). In contrast, gender, education level, and social support were not significantly associated with quality of life. Multivariate analysis identified walking ability (OR = 13.65; 95% CI: 1.03-180.61) and income (OR = 5.81; 95% CI: 1.02-33.07) as the most dominant predictors of quality of life in the older adults. These findings provide important implications that interventions to improve the quality of life in older adults in primary health care need to prioritize programs to improve ambulation, prevent physical function decline, and strengthen the economic aspects of older adults, especially in rural areas.

Abstract

Aqueous extract of johar leaf contains metabolite compounds such as flavonoids, sponins, tannins, phenols, anthraquinones, anthocyanins, and cardiac glycosides which can be used to substitute commercial antibiotics. The use of aqueous extract of johar leaf has been known to have antibacterial activity in vitro. This study aims to determine the effect of aqueous extract of johar leaves (Senna siamea) injection on survival and blood profile of snakehead fish (Channa striata) in vivo. This research was a laboratory study using a completely randomized design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 3 replications with a total sample of 75 snakehead fish. The fishin KA, KB, KC and KD groups were injected with aqueous extract of johar leaves with concentrations of 10%, 20%, 40%, and 60% respectively, while in KE group the fish was injected with distilled water (control). The parameters of this study were the survival rate and blood profile of snakehead fish. Blood hematology examination included calculation of erythrocyte count, hemoglobin level, and hematocrit percentage, leukocyte count, and thrombocyte count. The research data obtained were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and followed by Duncan's Multiple Distance test. Injection of aqueous extract of johar leaf did not affect the survival rate of snakehead fish. However, hemoglobin and platelet levels significant decrease in the group given 60% concentration of aqueous extract of johar leaf. It can be concluded that aqueous extract of johar leaf at a concentration of 10%, 20%, 40% is safe to use in snakehead fish. Keywords:Johar leaves extractSnakehead fishBlood profileSurvival rate
