Abstract

Hypertension is a systolic blood pressure 140 mmHg or higher and a diastolic blood pressure 90 mmHg or higher.22 In 2020 WHO (Word Health Organization) reported that there were 1.13 billion cases of hypertension and has caused 9.4 million dead.22 At the United States, in 2017-2018 it was reported that 63% people over 60 years old suffered from hypertension with a higher percentage of women (66.8%) than men (58.5%).2 According to the 2018 RISKESDAS results patients with hypertension in the elderly amounted to 63.5%. Due to its high prevalence, hypertension is a major global health problem and the main cause of death and disability in the world every year.12 Treatment of hypertension is carried out for a long time so that the success of hypertension treatment is strongly influenced by self management of patients to adhere to the treatment, routinely checking blood pressure, increasing physical activity, reducing cunsumption of foods containing sodium.11 Self management of hypertension has an important role in effective control off blood pressure in patient with hypertension.3 One of the ways to increase knowledge related to the prevention and control of hypertension is through education.10 The education provided in the form of theoretical materials such as lectures, discussions, counseling, e-learning, and also practices such as workshops or training with various related topics. The materials provided is in the form of facts about hypertension such as definitions, signs and symptoms, risk factors, how to diagnose and treat them, normal blood pressure, hypertension prevention, complications, drug use, drug side effects, the importance of taking medication regulary, the importance of blood pressure checks periodically, diet, physical activity, relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, muscle relaxation, guided imagery.18

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by impaired insulin secretion or hyperglycemia due to the inability of pancreatic β-cells to compensate for increased glucose levels in the blood. The pathophysiology of T2DM may result from the interaction of environmental and genetic factors. A person who has a family history of T2DM will experience genetic mutations that cause impaired insulin secretion and sensitivity. The genetic inheritance of the child is based on the parent alleles of both parents including some genes that have mutations. There are three types of genetic inheritance mechanisms described by parent of origin effects (POE), namely genomic imprinting, mitochondrial inheritance, and maternal intrauterine effects. The mechanism of impaired insulin secretion and sensitivity in someone with a family history of T2DM during puberty, which is also triggered by stress and hormonal imbalance, results in insulin resistance, especially significant when entering adolescence and supported by a family history of T2DM. In children with a family history of T2DM, it was found that pancreatic β-cell compensation was 30% lower compared to children without a family history of T2DM.

Abstract

Intestinal parasitic infection is a disease that still neglated, more likely found in developing countries. This infection is caused by a group of intestinal protozoa and worms, generally intestinal nematodes. In children, the STH group is the most common cause of infection. Infection often occurs via the fecal-oral route. Children more often consume infective stages to other age groups due to their poor hygiene behavior.  Intestinal parasitic infections in children can cause high mortality and mobility. This infection causes a decline in health conditions, nutritional absorption, intelligence and productivity. This can simultaneously cause disruption of growth and development in children. These manifestations are related to the virulence of the parasite strain, the number of infective stages consumed, the age of the patient, and the state of the immune system at the time of infection. Apart from that, the manifestations that arise are widespread, asymptomatic to chronic. The manifestions are related to the digestive tract as the target organ of infections. However, manifestations can also be found outside the digestive tract. This is because organisms move to other organs through blood vessels. Manifestations that arise in the digestive tract are usually nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea which is sometimes accompanied by blood. Not only that, weakness, fatigue, lethargy, and eating disorders are the manifestation of these infections. This is what causes growth and development disorders in children. Meanwhile, the extraintestinal mainifestations are liver abscess due to amoeba infection, Loeffler syndrome due to Ascaris lumbricoides infection and other manifestations. Usually, the intestinal nematoda infections caused have their own characteristics.

Abstract

Corneal ulcer is a pathological condition in the form of a lesion or defect caused by the loss of tissue discontinuity accompanied by infiltration, which can occur in the cornea, from the epithelium to the stroma. This literature review aims to describe the factors associated with the occurrence of corneal ulcers. This literature review describes the factors associated with the occurrence of corneal ulcers. Researchers use articles from Google Scholar and PubMed. The articles used are articles from the last 10 years from 2015-2025. Researchers use the keywords "corneal ulcer" and "factors". The articles obtained were 39 articles and 10 articles met the requirements. Researchers made a resume of the research results and interpreted and concluded from the selected articles. Corneal ulcers can be caused by various risk factors, both infectious and non-infectious. Unhygienic or prolonged use of contact lenses, viral infections such as herpes simplex, dry eye syndrome, eyelid disorders (such as entropion or trichiasis), use of steroid eye drops without medical supervision, and trauma or injury to the eye are the main causes. In addition, people with diabetes mellitus and those with a history of eye diseases such as blepharitis are also more susceptible to corneal ulcers.

Abstract

Stunting refers to short or very short stature based on length or height for age that is less than -2 standard deviations on the WHO growth curve. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 22.2% or 149.2 million children under 5 years old suffered from stunting in 2020. Stunting is caused by two factors: direct and indirect factors. This study aims to examine the relationship between the father's type of occupation and the mother's employment status with the incidence of stunting in the working area of the Seputih Surabaya Public Health Center, Central Lampung. The study employed a cross-sectional design, with a sample of 57 toddlers from the Seputih Surabaya Subdistrict, Central Lampung Regency. The research was conducted from September to November 2024. The sampling technique used proportional random sampling and simple random sampling. This study utilized consent forms containing statements of willingness to participate as respondents, and data collection was conducted using questionnaires. The questionnaire included questions about the father’s type of occupation (e.g., farmer, civil servant, entrepreneur/trader, accountant, livestock farmer, fisherman, employee, teacher, or unemployed) and the mother’s employment status (working or not working). The data were analyzed univariately. The results showed that among toddlers with stunting, the most common type of father's occupation was farming, involving 33 children (58%). Regarding the mother’s employment status, the majority of stunted toddlers had mothers who were not working, accounting for 35 children (61.4%).

Abstract

A normal menstrual cycle reflects good reproductive health and plays an important role in preparing the body for pregnancy. Based on the 2018 Basic Health Research, around 13.7% of women aged 10-59 years experienced irregular menstruation. One of the factors that can interfere with the normalcy of the menstrual cycle is abnormal nutritional status. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between nutritional status and the menstrual cycle in University of Lampung Medical Education students class of 2021. The type of research used was analytical observational with a cross-sectional approach, which was carried out from November 2024 to January 2025, involving 123 female students selected through simple random sampling technique. Data on nutritional status was obtained from the calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI), while menstrual cycle data was obtained using a menstrual cycle sheet. The results of the analysis using the mann-whitney test showed a p-value of 0.083 (p-value>0.05), which indicated that there was no significant relationship between nutritional status and menstrual cycle among University of Lampung medical education students Class of 2021.

Abstract

Abstract Spinal anesthesia is a commonly used anesthetic technique in various surgical procedures. Most operations are performed using spinal anesthesia rather than general anesthesia or local anesthesia. Spinal anesthesia is a regional anesthetic technique that involves injecting a local anesthetic into the subarachnoid space. Spinal anesthesia can avoid the risks of failed endotracheal intubation and the possibility of aspiration of gastric contents during general anesthesia, and can provide patient satisfaction. This article was written using a literature review method conducted through a literature search of various national and international journals. Journal articles from 2015 to 2025 served as the basis for the article used. References used were searched through the Pubmed, NCBI, and Google Scholar databases. The reading sources used were then analyzed using a systematic literature review method, which includes the activities of collecting, evaluating, and developing research with a specific focus. Spinal anesthesia, while having advantages, can also cause several complications. Complications of spinal anesthesia can include hypothermia, shivering, post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV), post-dural puncture headache (PDPH), high or total spinal block, and urinary retention.

Abstract

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an acute neurological disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness, accompanied by decreased or loss of reflexes due to an autoimmune process that attacks the peripheral nervous system. This condition can progress rapidly and potentially lead to paralysis and even respiratory failure if not treated promptly. This literature review aims to identify and analyze factors associated with the occurrence of Guillain-Barré Syndrome based on recent research. The research method was conducted through a literature review using Google Scholar and PubMed databases using the keywords "Guillain-Barré Syndrome" and "factors." The articles retrieved were published between 2015 and 2025. Of the 45 articles found, only 17 met the inclusion criteria and were subjected to in-depth analysis. The analysis process involved a systematic review of research results, interpretation of findings, and drawing conclusions regarding risk factors and mechanisms involved in GBS. The study results indicate that bacterial or viral infections are the primary triggers for GBS, particularly Campylobacter jejuni, Epstein-Barr virus, Cytomegalovirus, and Zika virus. Furthermore, some cases have been linked to vaccinations, surgical procedures, autoimmune conditions, and a history of upper respiratory or gastrointestinal infections prior to the onset of neurological symptoms. Genetic factors and an abnormal immune response are also suspected to play a role in the pathogenesis of GBS. Understanding these factors is crucial for increasing clinical awareness, accelerating early diagnosis, and optimizing prevention and management strategies. Surveillance of infectious diseases, implementation of safe medical practices, and increased awareness among healthcare workers are expected to reduce the incidence and mortality from Guillain-Barré Syndrome. However, in Indonesia, integrated studies related to GBS factors are still limited. Therefore, this study is expected to contribute scientifically to control efforts and improve the quality of healthcare services for patients at risk for or diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome.
