Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative case study is to investigate Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in speaking activities, especially in storytelling for primary school children. Data collection methods included (1) interviews to investigate the extent of HOTS understanding, implementation, tactics, students' reactions, and the impact of storytelling activities, (2) observations, and (3) documentation. An English Club teacher and the students at the elementary level served as the research's data source. Data were validated using source and technique triangulation. The interactive analysis of the Miles and Huberman model was utilized for data analysis, comprising processes of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the teacher grasped the HOTS feature and used it in narrative exercises. The strategies included asking questions, allowing youngsters to work on projects, and solving difficulties. Students’ reactions toward the storytelling activities varied because their focus levels are different. HOTS components in storytelling activities such as analyzing, evaluating, and creating have a significant impact on the ability to think critically, and creatively, communicate, work together, solve issues, and boost self-confidence. Due to these diverse abilities, HOTSs help children understand the storyline better and encourage them to take risks.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an English listening learning model infused with project-based learning and digital scholarship for autonomous learners. Digital scholarship (DS) is one element of eco-literacy that uses digital tools and technologies to make teaching and learning easier. Project-based learning (PjBL) is much better at offering contextualized, hands-on learning experiences that encourage critical thinking in the face of challenging problems. The descriptors of autonomous learners are infused into the existing learning model to create a dynamic and enriching educational experience for autonomous 10th-grade students. Conducted at a senior high school in Bogor, West Java province, the four steps of modified design and development research—need analysis, design, development, and evaluation—were applied in this study. The data were gathered by observation, interviewing, and syllabus analysis of the existing learning paradigm and reviewing pertinent research on PjBL, DS, autonomous learning, and listening comprehension. After a review of the relevant literature, it was discovered that three of eleven PjBL descriptors, five of the twenty-five DS descriptors, six of eleven B1 listening skill descriptors, and two of eleven autonomous learner descriptors had been included in the current learning model. A conceptual framework is used to develop the existing learning model to be an English listening learning model infused with project-based learning and digital scholarship for autonomous learners.

Abstract

This research aims to explore a holistic approach in Islamic basic education and how this approach can synthesize the development of students' potential from intellectual, spiritual and emotional aspects. The method used is a literature review which includes SINTA accredited articles 1-6 from the last five years. The research results show that curriculum integration that combines intellectual, spiritual and emotional aspects provides significant benefits in increasing students' understanding of the relationship between general knowledge and religious values. Holistic Islamic basic education has also proven effective in developing students' emotional intelligence, which is important for managing emotions, increasing empathy, and building strong character. The role of trained teachers and the support of a supportive learning environment were also identified as important factors in the successful implementation of a holistic approach. Additionally, technology can be used as an effective tool to support holistic learning integration. This study concludes that a holistic approach in Islamic basic education has great potential to create a comprehensive learning environment, which can support students' overall and balanced development. Recommendations for educational practice and further research are also presented to improve the implementation and effectiveness of this approach. Keywords: Holistic Approach, Islamic Basic Education, Potential Development, Intellectual, Spiritual, Emotional

Abstract

The intrigue surrounding microlearning's potential in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has motivated this research, aiming to delve into its applications and challenges in ESP and its materials design. This study explores the potential and impediments of employing microlearning in ESP, focusing on its material design and instructional methodology. Through a systematic literature review, five pertinent articles from 2016-2022 were selected and analyzed using platforms like Publish or Perish and Google Scholar. The findings reveal a limited yet impactful application of microlearning in ESP, highlighting its capacity to enhance learning through the facilitation of digital materials, bite-sized and self-paced learning, and student empowerment, among other benefits. In ESP materials design, microlearning stimulates learning and underscores the importance of integrating multimedia into the learning process. However, challenges such as the need for appropriate technology, poor learning initiative, creation of a new learning culture, students’ time constraints, teachers’ unfamiliarity with technology, and the need for adaptive material design based on microlearning principles, material development, and ESP materials, emerge as significant hurdles. This research implies a valuable pathway for future studies and practical applications, offering insights into navigating through these challenges and optimizing the application of microlearning in ESP and its material design, thereby contributing to the field's pedagogical development.
