Abstract

Misconceptions in polynomial material pose a significant issue in mathematics education, hindering students’ conceptual understanding. This study aims to examine the effect of collaborative learning on students’ misconceptions regarding polynomials in Grade XI at SMA Negeri 14 Kota Jambi. The research employed a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control-group design involving 57 students: 28 in the experimental group and 29 in the control group. The research instrument was a diagnostic test in the form of essay items, validated by subject matter experts, and administered as both a pretest and a posttest to measure misconceptions in polynomial operations, polynomial division, and the factors and roots of polynomial equations. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, gain scores, and an independent sample t-test. The results indicated that collaborative learning was highly effective in reducing student misconceptions. The experimental group showed a 42.3% reduction in misconception scores (from 71.29 to 41.14), while the control group experienced only a 12.2% decrease (from 70.93 to 62.24). Hypothesis testing revealed a highly significant difference (p < 0.001) with a very large effect size (Cohen’s d = 8.848). All students in the experimental group reached the low misconception category, whereas all students in the control group remained in the moderate category. Therefore, collaborative learning was proven to be more effective than conventional instruction in addressing students’ misconceptions

Abstract

The research investigates methods to enhance student learning experiences through authentic and relevant educational activities in modern mathematics classrooms. Outdoor learning serves as an educational approach that enables students to develop better physical and mental involvement in their learning activities. The Indonesian educational system faces multiple systemic barriers that prevent outdoor learning from becoming a standard practice in schools. Research to date focuses on the teaching methods that teachers use during math trail activities, but it does not fully connect these practices to the principles of Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI). The research investigates outdoor mathematics learning characteristics while identifying implementation obstacles and evaluating their effects on PMRI-based math trail development. The research design uses descriptive qualitative methods, which combine data from three sources through observation, interviews, and document analysis for triangulation purposes. The research shows that outdoor mathematics education contains real-world characteristics and participatory and exploratory elements and contextual grounding but fails to follow essential PMRI standards. The research provides practical recommendations that help developers create learning paths that adapt to specific learning environments. The research applies PMRI theory to outdoor learning environments, which creates new possibilities for using contextual learning to teach mathematics through environmental exploration in Indonesian schools.

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning is a fundamental competency in mathematics learning, particularly in solving probability word problems that require systematic and logical thinking. One widely used framework to support problem solving is Polya’s problem-solving theory, which consists of four stages: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and reviewing the solution. This study aims to analyze students’ mathematical reasoning abilities in solving probability word problems based on Polya’s steps. Polya’s theory is employed as an analytical framework to examine how students reason through probability tasks. The study adopted a qualitative descriptive approach involving tenth-grade students at a vocational high school in Jambi City. Data were collected through probability word problem tests, interviews, and classroom observations. The findings indicate that students’ mathematical reasoning abilities vary across the stages of Polya’s problem-solving process. At the understanding stage, most students were able to identify relevant information, although some experienced difficulties with probability terminology. During the planning stage, only a small number of students could formulate systematic solution strategies. In the execution stage, many students performed basic calculations correctly, but errors emerged when applying formulas to more complex problems. The reviewing stage was the least practiced, resulting in many undetected errors. These results suggest that while students possess basic problem-solving skills, they require further guidance to develop systematic and reflective reasoning. Therefore, reinforcing each stage of Polya’s problem-solving process is essential for improving students’ mathematical reasoning in solving probability word problems.

Abstract

This study was driven by the challenges dyslexic students face in understanding mathematical word problems, stemming from decoding, language processing, and neurological difficulties. The research aims to describe and examine how dyslexic students comprehend math word problems with support from the Game-Math TCM AI, which provides text-to-speech and visual manipulative features. This study employed a descriptive qualitative case study involving two sixth-grade students with dyslexia selected through screening tests. Before completing five addition and subtraction word problems, the students were introduced to the AI features used in the learning activities. Data were gathered from worksheets, screen recordings of student AI interactions, and semi-structured interviews. The analysis focused on four comprehension indicators: interpreting, classifying, inferring, and comparing. Findings show that text-to-speech assisted students in understanding the problem content (interpreting), while visual manipulatives supported their ability to identify and select the appropriate operations (classifying). Both features also helped students outline the steps toward conclusions (inferring), and the visual tools enabled them to verify their understanding (comparing). Overall, the combination of text-to-speech, visual manipulatives, and guided support reduced cognitive demands and strengthened dyslexic students’ understanding of math word problems through the Game-Math TCM platform.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the use of ADLX (Adaptive Learning Experience) on the mathematics learning outcomes of grade XI high school students by considering learning motivation. Using a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design, this study involved several 11th grade high school students in X City who were divided into two groups: an experimental group using ADLX and a control group using conventional methods. The research instruments include mathematics learning outcome tests and learning motivation questionnaires validated by experts. The data were analyzed using the variance analysis technique (ANOVA) to test the hypothesis. The results showed significant differences in mathematics learning outcomes between the experimental and control groups, with the experimental group using ADLX showing better results. The data analysis also revealed that learning motivation interacted significantly with ADLX use, suggesting students with high learning motivation benefited more from ADLX use than students with low learning motivation. In general, students report that their learning motivation is influenced by the material's relevance to their daily lives and interactive and engaging teaching approaches. The use of ADLX, which involves hands-on experience and real-life examples, is considered effective in increasing understanding and motivation for learning math. This shows that the contextual learning approach is to improve students' understanding of mathematics. The conclusion of this study is that the use of ADLX can improve the mathematics learning outcomes of high school students in grade XI, especially for students with high learning motivation. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating adaptive technology in learning and the need for strategies to increase student learning motivation to achieve optimal learning outcomes.
