Abstract

Ethnomathematics offers a culturally responsive pathway for connecting formal mathematics with students’ lived experiences, yet empirical evidence regarding its effect on mathematical connection skills remains limited. This study examined the effectiveness of an ethnomathematics approach based on Jambi local culture in improving junior high school students’ mathematical connection skills in solid geometry. A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design was employed with 64 eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 1 Muaro Jambi, divided equally into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received culturally contextualized instruction using Jambi cultural objects, whereas the control group followed conventional mathematics teaching. Data were collected through a mathematical connection skills test covering connections among mathematical concepts, between mathematics and other disciplines, and between mathematics and everyday life. Because the posttest data were not normally distributed, group differences were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test, followed by effect-size estimation. The experimental group achieved a higher mean posttest score than the control group, 66.88 compared with 33.75, and showed a more favorable distribution of achievement levels. The difference was statistically significant at p < .001, with a large effect size of r = .657. These findings indicate that integrating Jambi local culture into mathematics instruction can substantially strengthen students’ ability to construct, transfer, and apply mathematical relationships. The study positions ethnomathematics as an evidence-based instructional strategy that advances mathematical understanding while reinforcing cultural relevance in secondary mathematics education.

Abstract

Math trails dan pembelajaran di luar ruangan menawarkan matematika dengan konteks, namun karakteristik efektifnya belum dibahas. Systematic Literature Review mensintesis efektifitas dan dukungan digital. Menggunakan PRISMA, jurnal yang terindeks Scopus (2019–2025) kata “math trails” dan “outdoor learning”, menghasilkan 312 artikel dan 50 artikel yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi. Analisis deskriptif dan tematik menjawab tiga pertanyaan. Efektivitas sejalan dengan desain tugas yang kontekstual, terstruktur, dan kolaboratif; dukungan digital yang proporsional, yang mendukung eksplorasi kontekstual tanpa mendominasi pengalaman belajar (umpan balik/validasi berbasis perangkat, geolokasi/GPS, dasbord pemantauan, realitas tertambah); dan koordinasi yang disengaja oleh peneliti di seluruh fase briefing pra-lapangan, petunjuk di pos dan refleksi pasca-aktivitas. Hasil dilaporkan secara konsisten mencakup peningkatan pemahaman konseptual, pemecahan masalah, motivasi dan sikap, literasi spasial, dan keterampilan sosial. Efektivitas meningkat ketika konteks budaya lokal diintegrasikan dengan scaffolding eksplisit dan teknologi yang sesuai. Batasan intervensi yang singkat dan akses teknologi yang tidak merata di sekolah. Temuan ini menawarkan kerangka kerja praktis desain kurikulum dan pengembangan pelatihan. Math trails and outdoor learning offer context-rich mathematics, yet effective characteristics remain scattered. This review synthesizes effective features, digital supports, and key outcomes. Using PRISMA, we searched Scopus-indexed journals (2019–2025) with “math trails” and “outdoor learning,” yielding 312 records; 50 met inclusion criteria. Descriptive and thematic analyses addressed three questions. Effectiveness aligned with contextualized, scaffolded, collaborative task design; proportional digital supports contextual exploration without dominating the learning experience (device-based feedback/validation, geolocation/GPS, monitoring dashboards, augmented reality); and deliberate teacher/researcher orchestration across phases pre-field briefing, on-site prompts and hints at each post, and post-activity reflection. Reported outcomes consistently included gains in conceptual understanding, problem solving, motivation and attitudes, spatial literacy, and social skills. Effectiveness strengthened when local cultural contexts were integrated with explicit scaffolding and appropriate technologies. Limitations involved short intervention windows and uneven school access to technology. Findings offer a practical framework for curriculum design and teacher professional development.

Abstract

In mathematics learning, students often required concrete, interactive, and engaging learning media to help them understand basic arithmetic more easily. Students with dyscalculia required special attention because they experienced difficulties in understanding numbers and basic arithmetic operations. This study aimed to develop an educational game called Math Journey based on the Triple Code Model as an alternative learning medium that supported students with dyscalculia in learning basic arithmetic. The game was designed using verbal activities, visual representations, and magnitude understanding in accordance with the principles of the Triple Code Model through the use of concrete tools in play-based activities. This study employed a Research and Development method using the ADDIE model. The development process involved material experts, learning media experts, and teachers as practitioners to evaluate the feasibility and practicality of the product. The subjects of this study were four elementary school students with dyscalculia. Data were collected through material validation sheets, media validation sheets, teacher practicality assessment sheets, and learning outcome tests. The results showed that the game achieved a material feasibility score of 90.91% and a media feasibility score of 95.68%, both categorized as very feasible. The practicality assessment by teachers reached 100%, indicating a very feasible category. Furthermore, the effectiveness test using the N-gain score yielded a value of 0.78, which indicated that the game media was effective for students with dyscalculia. Overall, the Math Journey game based on the Triple Code Model was proven to be feasible, practical, and effective in supporting basic arithmetic learning and provided an enjoyable learning experience for students with dyscalculia.

Abstract

Critical thinking (CT) and the limitations of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based learning design have become major challenges in contemporary education. This study aims to identify students' critical-thinking challenges and to develop an AI-supported instructional framework based on the P3 Task Taxonomy. This study employed the ADDIE instructional design model and was limited to the Analysis and Design phases. The participants consisted of 42 pre-service physics teachers. Data were collected through open-ended CT tasks and analyzed descriptively based on students' cognitive response patterns. The findings revealed that 76.2% of the students predominantly exhibited System 1 thinking, characterized by intuitive responses with minimal elaboration, whereas only 20.3% demonstrated analytical System 2 reasoning. Based on these findings, an AI-supported P3 Task Taxonomy was developed that integrates Practice, Problem, and Project tasks with adaptive feedback and scaffolding mechanisms tailored to students' cognitive characteristics. Practically, the framework guides instructors in designing AI-assisted learning environments that foster CT development. Theoretically, this study extends current understanding of the relationships among cognitive systems, instructional task design, and AI support in the development of CT skills.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze knowledge construction process on the 8th grade of junior high school through mathematical problem solving based on ethnomathematics for several students with high, medium, and low problem solving abilities. We employ qualitative method to reveal the subject’s knowledge construction process. Data collection in this study was carried out by giving problem solving ability test, knowledge construction process test and interviewing 3 research subjects, one student was selected from each level of problem solving ability. Data were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. This research describes that students with high problem solving abilities in all four steps of problem solving use assimilation thinking process. Students thinking process whose problem-solving abilities is medium use assimilation thinking process in understanding the problem, creating a solution, and carrying out the plan, while reviewing the answers they use accommodation thinking process. In addition, students with low problem solving abilities in understanding the problem, use assimilation and accommodation thinking processes, in creating a solution, they use the assimilation thinking process, and use accommodation thinking process in carrying out the plan, while reviewing the answers there is imperfect accommodation thinking process

Abstract

General Background Modern education requires analytical reasoning skills to evaluate evidence, formulate logical decisions, and solve complex educational challenges. Specific Background Successfully resolving unconventional numerical problems demands persistent cognitive effort, which relies heavily on a student's psychological endurance and their sequential cognitive stages. Knowledge Gap While previous research connects resilience to problem-solving, literature lacks a comprehensive mapping of how different endurance categories specifically govern the sequential stages of encoding, storage, retrieval, and monitoring during complex cognitive tasks. Aims This qualitative descriptive study examines analytical abilities across three psychological endurance categories in solving unconventional numerical tasks, viewed through the lens of cognitive sequential stages. Results Data from eighth-grade students reveal that highly resilient climbers optimally execute all analytical indicators alongside flawless cognitive sequencing. Moderate-endurance campers demonstrate adequate initial understanding but exhibit inconsistencies during the evaluation and monitoring phases. Conversely, low-resilience quitters display severe reasoning deficiencies, particularly struggling with encoding initial contexts and reflecting on potential solutions. Novelty This research distinctly maps psychological endurance categories directly onto cognitive mechanics, proving that mental tenacity fundamentally dictates the structural quality of logical reasoning. Implications Educational practitioners must tailor instructional scaffolding according to student psychological resilience to strengthen cognitive sequencing and overall reasoning capabilities. Highlights High psychological resilience guarantees optimal cognitive encoding and meticulous strategic evaluation. Moderate endurance leads to adequate problem comprehension but highly inconsistent solution monitoring. Low tenacity causes severe difficulties in understanding initial concepts and formulating logical reasoning.
