Abstract

In the present study antioxidant and antioxidant activity of some tropical fruits was evaluated. Antioxidants are compounds or molecules that can scavenging and prevent free radicals and reactive oxygen species that can caused a cell damage. Fruit was known as a source of antioxidant. South Kalimantan Indonesia, has a variety of fruit such as mentega, nangka, timun suri and kuranji. Study for evaluating the antioxidant levels and activity of those fruit were never been investigated. Thus, our study aim to measure the antioxidant levels and antioxidant activtity of those selected fruits. Ascorbic acid, lycopene, b-carotene levels and antioxidant activtity of four selected tropical fruits was evaluated using spectrophotometer. The result of this studied suggest that the four selected tropical fruits is potential antioxidant because it contained ascorbic acid, b-carotene, lycopene and had effect of scavenging radical hydroxyl, hydrogen peroxide and chellating ferrous iron.

Abstract

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most toxic heavy metal. Numerous tissues both in vitro and in vivo suggest that Cd induced lipid peroxidation. The presence of antioxidant can inhbit this process. This present study was designed to determine the effects of mango, papaya, and banana juices on on malondi aldehyde levels (MDA, product of cellular lipid peroxidation) during Cd exposure in vitro. Significant differences was observed between three selected fruits juices and MDA levels and also between concentration of fruits juices and MDA levels. The highest correlation was found between banana juices and MDA levels with IC50 1,12, and followed by papaya and mango juices with IC 50 1,37 and 3,87 respectively. The findings of this study suggest that the three selected fruits juices may exert its protective action against Cd-induced lipid peroxidation in liver homogenate in vitro possibly through its antioxidant mechanism.Key WordCadmium, Lipid Peroxidation, Antioxidant Activity and Fruits Juices

Abstract

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of a topical application of ethanolic extracts of Mauli banana stem on buccal mucosa wounds in rats (Rattus novergicus). Three sets of experiments with 3 groups male rats each consisted of 9 animals were used for studying wound oxidative stress status. Group 1 (P0) as the negative control was left to heal spontaneously; group 2 (P1) as the postive control were treated with alocair topically; and group 3 (P2) as treatment group were treated with ethanloic extracts of Mauli banana stem topically, respectively, 24h after wound creation for 3 days. The oxidative stress status was evaluated by monitoring the SOD, CAT activity, MDA and CC levels. The effect of ethanolic extracts of Mauli banana stem on oxidative stress status revealed significant increased in SOD activity, decreased in MDA levels, and no significant change both in CAT activity and CC levels compared to negative control. These results showed that The ethanolic extracts of Mauli banana stem might affect the oxidative stress status during wound healing process. Abstract

Abstract The Miftahul Ulum Islamic Boarding School in Bangkiling Raya Village is one of the Islamic boarding schools whose students do not yet have many soft skills, one of which is as an entrepreneur. The Service Team from ULM together with PT Adaro Indonesia through the Grand Matching Fund program plans to carry out community service activities at that location with the material of kelulut honey bee cultivation. Service activities carried out include preliminary survey activities, socialization or counseling, training and mentoring. During the survey, the service team was well received by village officials and partners and they were very enthusiastic about participating in this service activity. The socialization activity was carried out by the service team with KKN students from ULM and went well. The training provided to partners includes the cultivation of kelulut honey bees, namely the management of kelulut honey bee cultivation. Mentoring activities include accompanying partners from cultivation to harvesting and marketing assisted by KKN students. From the results of community service activities there is a problem, namely honey colonies that do not develop. To overcome this problem, the service team conducts socialization and training on solving kelulut bee colonies and care management so that the colony develops well. In addition, the team also provided motivation to be passionate about cultivating kelulut honey bees. Kegiatan pendampingan meliputi mendampingi mitra dari budidaya hingga pemanenan dan pemasaran dibantu oleh mahasiswa KKN. Dari hasil kegiatan pengabdian terdapat masalah yaitu koloni madu yang tidak berkembang. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, tim pengabdi melakukan sosialisasi dan pelatihan mengenai pemecahan koloni lebah kelulut serta manajemen perawatan agar koloni berkembang dengan baik. Abstract

Mandiangin is one of the tropical rainforests in South Kalimantan, with highly diverse plants used for health and medicinal purposes. To date, scientific evidence on these plants' content and bioactivities remain lacking for further medical applications. In this perspective, this study aimed to determine the phytochemical contents of six selected plants, which include the Bilaran Kusan (Passiflora foetida), Sembilakan (Caesalpinia sp), Bamban Batu (Donax cenniformis), Kilayu (Aglaia sp), Ulur-Ulur (Tetrastigma sp), and Mali-Mali (Leea indica) from the Mandiangin rainforest, in addition to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Results revealed that the Leea indica extracts exhibited the highest flavonoid content (70.892 ± 0.34 mg/ml QE), while the highest tannin (2.101 ± 0.02 mg/ml GAE) and alkaloid contents (25.30 ± 0.71 %) were recorded for the Aglaia sp species. Meanwhile, Passiflora foetida showed the highest saponin content at (31.78 ± 2.97 %). Based on the study findings, the extracts of all six plants from the Mandiangin rainforest possessed medically valuable phytochemical constituents, as seen from their appreciable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Of all these plants, P. foetida and L. indica demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity, whereas the highest anti-inflammatory activity was noted for the P. foetida, Aglaia- and Caesalpinia species.

Abstract

Kasturi (Mangifera casturi) is a endemic plant of Borneo. The polyphenol content of M. casturi leaves has antioxidant properties, including gallic acid and methyl gallic. The antioxidant potential of gallic acid and methyl gallate of M. casturi leaves is thought to inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells. Human Epidermal Growth Factor 2 (HER-2) protein is an important factor in the epidermal growth of breast cells and is also a target for breast cancer treatment. This study aims to investigate the potential of gallic acid and methyl gallic compounds from M. casturi as inhibitors of HER-2 protein. Abstract

Glikolisis merupakan proses oksidasi glukosa yang melibatkan enzim hingga menghasilkan asam piruvat dalam kondisi aerob serta asam laktat dalam keadaan anaerob. Enzim-enzim yang terlibat di dalam glikolisis dapat berinteraksi dengan logam berat, melalui pengikatan secara kovalen terhadap residu asam amino dari enzim. Untuk membuktikan hal tersebut, digunakan metode in silico dengan menggunakan MIB: Metal Ion-Binding site prediction dan server docking dari Lu Lab@StructuralBioinformatics, China Medical University (http://bioinfo.cmu.edu.tw/MIB/). Enzim-enzim kunci pada glikolisis diperoleh dari RCSB Protein Data Bank (https://www.rcsb.org/search), yakni enzim glukokinase dengan kode PDB: 3FGU, enzim heksokinase dengan kode PDB: 4IXC, dan enzim piruvat kinase dengan kode PDB: 1ZJH. Protein disiapkan dengan menghilangkan residu ligan alami yang ada dalam protein. Persiapan ligan dan protein digunakan oleh program Chimera 1.15. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa interaksi Hg terhadap enzim glukokinase, heksokinase, dan enzim piruvat kinase lebih reaktif dibanding Cd. Pada glikolisis, Cd banyak berinteraksi dengan residu asam glutamate dan residu histidine sedangkan Hg banyak berinteraksi dengan sistein pada enzim-enzim glikolisis. Pembentukkan kompleks Hg dengan resisdu sistein, menyebabkan Hg akan berikatan dengan gugus thiol bebas yang tersedia. Merkuri yang terikat pada gugus thiol pada residu sistein mengakibatkan fungsi residu sistein pada protein tidak berjalan dengan semestinya sehingga enzim tidak aktif dan glikolisis terganggu.

Abstract

Mekanisme kadmium menginduksi toksisitas pada hepar yaitu dengan menimbulkan stres oksidatif. Stres oksidatif menghambat enzim-enzim yang berperan dalam proses metabolisme glukosa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perbedaan kadar glukosa pada homogenat hepar. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental laboratorik yang dilakukan pada 4 kelompok: kelompok P0 yang tidak dipajankan Cd, kelompok P1 dipajankan Cd 0,03 mg/L, kelompok P2 dipajankan Cd 0,3 mg/L, dan  kelompok P3 dipajankan Cd 3 mg/L. Hasil penelitian didapatkan rata-rata kadar glukosa pada kelompok P0 sebesar 21.667 μM, kelompok P1 sebesar 33.278 μM, kelompok P2 sebesar 69.889 μM, dankelompok P3 sebesar 150.667 μM. Melalui uji statistik Kruskal-Wallis didapatkan perbedaan yang bermakna p=0,000 (p<0,05) dan uji pos hoc Mann-Whitney juga menunjukkan perbedaan yang bermakna pada semua kelompok. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa semakin tinggi konsentrasi pemajanan Cd terhadap homogenat hepar maka semakin tinggi pula peningkatan kadar glukosa pada hepar tikus.

Abstract

Pesticides are chemicals used to control insects, fungi, weeds, and others. Unrestrained use of pesticides leads to poisoning that has an impact on inflammation and anemia. To provide evidence for this notion, acetylcholinesterase enzyme levels, blood sedimentation rates, and blood hemoglobin levels of farmers exposed to pesticides have been studied. The study design was quantitative in a cross-sectional manner. The participants of the study were all members of the Kurnia Makmur farmer group in Landasan Ulin Utara District, Banjarbaru with a total sample of 60 people. An examination of acetylcholinesterase, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and hemoglobin enzyme levels was carried out at the Banjar Regency Health Lab. The blood sample was withdrawn from the cubital vein. Spectrophotometry was used to determine acetylcholinesterase enzyme levels, while ESR was determined by the automatic method. Hemoglobin levels are measured by the cyanmethemoglobin method. T-tests were used to compare acetylcholinesterase, ESR, and hemoglobin levels in the normal group and the poisoning group. The study concluded that exposure to a pesticide in farmers' pesticide poisoning may cause inflammation characterized by an increase in ERS. However, there was no decrease in hemoglobin levels.
