Abstract

The pandemic of Covid-19 affected entire daily human life worldwide, including sports activities among athletes. An athlete was pushed to suit their routine activities with a new health protocol for Covid-19 prevention. Some of them were programmed to train at home with a moderate density of exercise, but others were still in a high density of exercise. This study compared the serum level of hemoglobin (Hb), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and hepcidin among athletes with a high versus moderate exercise density training program during the pandemic. Thirty-four indoor soccer athletes of a soccer football school in Malang voluntarily registered as a subject. Half of them received moderate exercise density exercise programs, and others received high-density exercise programs during June-July 2020. Interleukin-6 and hepcidin level mean was found significantly lower in the moderate group compared to the high-density group. Hemoglobin level mean was found not different between those groups. The lower density of exercise influenced on IL-6 and hepcidin serum level of athlete, but not on hemoglobin level.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze human sperm motility, viability, and morphology before and after cryopreservation. This true laboratory experimental study had pre and post randomized one group design. The study was conducted at the Embryology, Andrology, and Genetics Laboratory, Department of Medical Biology, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga from August to November 2017. The eighteen samples of fresh semen were collected from male volunteers who agreed and signed the informed consent of the study. Samples were analyzed their motility, viability, and morphology before and after cryopreservation. Results of this study indicated differentiation between motility before and after cryopreservation. Cryopreservation process decreased progressive motility (42.22 + 9.46%; 17.83 + 6.24%; p< 0.0001) and increased the number of immotile spermatozoa (35.44 + 10.15%; 60.11 + 12.53%; p< 0.0001). Cryopreservation also decreased human sperm viability (73.78 + 8.91%; 40.83 + 12.89%; p< 0.0001) and morphology (10.94 + 4.96%; 7.39 + 3.90%; p< 0.0001). Cryopreservation of human spermatozoa caused the decreased of motility, viability, and morphology.

Abstract

Evaluations on Plasma Prothrombin Time (PPT) and Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) are required in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) stage V to determine the risk of bleeding after hemodialysis (HD) using heparin as the anticoagulant. This study aimed to compare the results of PPT and APTT in pre and post-hemodialysis patients with minimum dose of heparin. This was an observational-analytical study with cross-sectional design. The samples were collected in HD wards of Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. There were 50 PPT and APTT samples collected from June to August 2017. The samples were evaluated using the tool CoaDATA 501. The examination of coagulation study was conducted in Clinical Pathology Laboratory of Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. Paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were performed in this study. In the 50 samples, pre-hemodialysis PPT ranged between 10.2-17.6 with the mean of 12.6±2.03 seconds, while for post-hemodialysis, the range was 10.1-20.9 with the mean of 13.41±2.43 seconds. Pre-hemodialysis APPT ranged between 19.5-75.2 with the mean of 30.32±10.43 seconds, while in post hemodialysis the range was 22.21-175 with the mean of 37.52±26.40 seconds. The results of PTT evaluation in pre and post-HD showed no significant difference (p=0.083), while those of APTT showed a significant difference (p=0.035 or p<0.05). Prolongation of APTT in post-HD is due to the use of heparin as an anticoagulant that increases PPT and APTT by inhibiting antithrombin III. HD procedures cause decreased activity of coagulation factors II, IX, X, XII leading to APTT prolongation in post-HD. A significant APTT prolongation was found in post-HD patients with CKD V.

Abstract

The eccentric contraction has been proven to improve Glut-1 expression in muscle and fasting glucose levels in mice. The same eccentric contraction occurs in human being when walking or running while wearing high heels. Innovation on the eccentric contraction with high heels can be done by using a specific shoe insole. The design of the rear insole is made thicker than the front. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of insole use specified for eccentric activities on daily work shoes on the skeletal muscle damage after wearing the specified insole. Skeletal muscle damage was measured based on sTnI level. This was experimental study with pretest-posttest design. The subjects involved were non-diabetic woman workers in Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Airlangga, and were divided into two groups. Each group represented group members who wore 5-degree and 10-degree insoles respectively. The angle used for the shoe insoles were 5° and 10° respectively. These insoles were worn on weekdays for one week. Blood was taken one day after the subjects stop wearing the insoles. Data results showed that the levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG) of subjects who wore the 10-degree insole had a value of p<0.05. The use of insole lead to decreased levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG). This study found that the sTnI levels in the 5-degree and 10-degree insole groups had no significant effect on troponin I skeletal muscle levels before and after treatment.

Abstract

Diabetes is a metabolic syndrome which characterized with insulin insensitivity, lack of GLUT-4 membrane presentation and ATP deficiency. ATP is needed for substrate phosphorylation, signalling pathways, protein translation and cellular survival. Since GLUT-1 was discovered as alternative glucose transporter on muscle membrane, some studies started to investigate it more. This study aimed to investigate GLUT-1 presentation on diabetes muscle membrane of rat model in time. Diabetes was obtained from a 50 mg/kg B.W of streptozotocin intra peritoneal injection on rat. We found that GLUT-1 presentation increased significantly in time of diabetic stages. It correlated negatively with GLUT-4 presentation and mortality. Eccentric downhill running on diabetic rat model improved GLUT-1 presentation and blood glucose level. It was promising for diabetes management therapy at the future.

ABSTRACT: Clean and Healthy Living Behavior among Diarrhea Patients in the Labuhan Ratu Working Area, Bandar Lampung City in 2024Background: Diarrhea is an environment-based disease caused by infections, including bacteria and viruses, and is commonly transmitted through the fecal–oral route. Diarrhea can affect all age groups, including toddlers, children, and adults from various social backgrounds. It is characterized by defecation with a more liquid stool consistency than usual, occurring three or more times within a 24-hour period. Objective: This study aimed to describe the availability of clean water, handwashing with soap (HWWS) habits, and the use of healthy latrines in the Labuhan Ratu working area, Bandar Lampung City, in 2024.Methods: This study employed a descriptive research design, which aimed to objectively describe a situation. The study focused on identifying and describing Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) among diarrhea patients. Results: The results showed that 36.5% of respondents used clean water that did not meet health requirements, while 63.4% used clean water that met the requirements. Handwashing with soap (HWWS) practices that did not meet the requirements were found in 53.7% of respondents, whereas 46.2% practiced proper handwashing with soap. In addition, 31.1% of respondents used latrines that did not meet health standards, while 68.8% used healthy latrines. Conclusion: The study indicates that a considerable proportion of diarrhea patients still experience inadequate clean water availability, poor handwashing with soap habits, and the use of unhealthy latrines, which may contribute to the occurrence of diarrhea.Recommendation: It is recommended that the Labuhan Ratu Health Center and related institutions strengthen health education for the community, particularly diarrhea patients and their families, regarding the importance of using safe clean water, proper handwashing with soap (HWWS) practices, and the use of healthy latrines. In addition, continuous promotion of Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) through education, assistance, and regular monitoring is needed to reduce the risk of diarrhea incidence in the Labuhan Ratu working area, Bandar Lampung City. Keywords: Clean and Healthy Living Behavior, Diarrhea, Clean Water, Handwashing with Soap, Healthy Latrines  Latar Belakang: Diare merupakan penyakit berbasis lingkungan yang disebabkan oleh infeksi, termasuk bakteri dan virus, serta penularan melalui jalur fekal–oral. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis, which often causes infertility, is characterized by a complex interplay between oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and apoptosis. Currently, the most effective therapy used for endometriosis is hormonal treatments, however it has many common side effects. Therefore, it is necessary to explore alternative treatments for endometriosis, including herbal ingredients. Phaleria macrocarpa fruit contains flavonoids with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which have potency to improve fertility in endometriosis cases. However, assessments of whether P. macrocarpa might have any effect on oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and apoptosis in relation to endometriosis are still limited. This study was conducted to identify the effect of P. macrocarpa fruit ethanol extract (PMFEE) in improving infertility by assessing oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and apoptosis parameters in endometriosis mice model.METHODS: Female Balb/C mice were endometriosis-induced, and treated either with 6.5 µg/day Letrozole, 7.5 mg/kgBW/day PMFEE, or 15 mg/kgBW/day PMFEE for 14 days. Heatlhy mice were also included as control. Mice were necropsied, then the uterus and fat tissue around the uterus was collected. Malondialdehyde (MDA) as oxidative stress marker, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α as inflammatory marker, and Caspase-3 as apoptosis marker were assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).RESULTS: In uterus, MDA and TNF-α levels were significantly different among all groups (p<0.05). PMFEE both at 7.5 and 15 mg/kgBW/day lowered MDA and TNF-α compared to the healthy mice and mice receiving Letrozol. Meanwhile, Caspase-3 levels were quite indifferent among groups, showing that PMFEE was able to maintain the Caspase-3 levels in the endometriosis-induced mice.CONCLUSION: PMFEE reduces the MDA and TNF-α, also maintains Caspase-3 levels in the uterus of endometriosis-induced mice, suggesting it might have potential to improve fertility in endometriosis mice.KEYWORDS: Phaleria macrocarpa, endometriosis, infertility, MDA, TNF-α, Caspase-3
