Abstract

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a non-communicable disease with a high prevalence in Indonesia. T2DM is caused by insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. One of the therapy for T2DM is insulin administration which is injected into the subcutaneous tissue. The absorption of insulin in the subcutaneous tissue is influenced by many factors, one of which is the thickness of subcutaneous fat. This study aimed to determine the correlation between the skinfold thickness of T2DM patients with the total daily dose of insulin needed every day. Methods: This was an observational analytic study using a cross-sectional design to analyze the correlation between subcutaneous fat thickness represented by skinfold thickness and the total daily dose of insulin of T2DM patients. Measurement of skinfold thickness was carried out on the triceps using a skinfold caliper. Data on the patient's total daily dose of insulin were obtained from medical records. Results: A total of 53 patients were included in this study. The patient's mean triceps skinfold thickness was 26.29±8.72 mm. The mean total daily dose of insulin was 40.96±18.01 IU. The results of the Spearman Rank correlation test showed a significant correlation between skinfold thickness on the triceps and the patient's total daily dose of insulin (p<0.05). Conclusion: The higher the skinfold thickness, the greater the dose of insulin needed by the patient.

Abstract

Background: Early recognition of phallic size abnormalities is essential to identify underlying endocrine and genetic disorders. Parents are concerned regarding their son’s penis length, especially obese and short-stature boys. This study aimed to investigate the factors of penile length in prepubertal boys aged 9-11 in Surabaya. Methods: A cross-sectional analytic observational study was conducted between October and November 2021 during the community services program of the Andrology Study Program, Universitas Airlangga. One hundred forty-eight healthy boys aged 9-11 years were enrolled in this study. Penile parameters and anthropometric measures were recorded. Data were analyzed with Spearman Rho’s formula to correlate the variables studied. Results: The average penile lengths and penile circumference of the penis were 6.3±1.4 and 5.2±1.0 cm, respectively. This study found two boys with micropenis (1.35%) with normal and overweight body mass index (BMI). The penile length was positively correlated with height but not with BMI.Conclusion: Androgen and growth hormones significantly influence penile length. Children with abnormal BMI tend to have smaller penile sizes, associated with increasing androgen aromatization.

Abstract

Adolescent is a transitional phase of growth and development from the children to be an adult. Physical, sexuality and immunity are altered during this transition adolescent. Adolescent was commonly suffered for illness due to immunity variability. This community development program was aimed to introduce methods of self-immunity survey and exercise as strengthened instrument for adolescent immunity. Student of Junior High School was the primary target as representative of adolescent. The teachers were asked as facilitator to transfer it knowledge to the students. The Government of Pacitan collaborated to encourage this implemented program on Junior High School. The attendances were 90% of 50 individual invitations. More than 90% attendances finished the course until the post test examination. This program increased teacher’s knowledge two-fold higher in score of tests. Teachers was more familiar to adolescent immunity, especially in self-immunity survey and exercise methods. Further, it needs to be continued to strengthen adolescent immunity among Junior High School students.

Abstract

Infections of the nervous system, such as acute bacterial meningitis, pose serious health problems that require immediate intervention. In experimental animals, exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is used to induce meningitis. Aside from drug intervention to reduce inflammation in meningitis, aerobic exercise helps to maintain the regulatory mechanisms of brain homeostasis through anti-inflammatory mechanisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of aerobic exercise on malondialdehyde (MDA), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), apoptosis, and spatial memory. A four-week experimental study was conducted using 18 rats, which were randomly divided into three different groups (six rats per group): healthy rats as negative controls (non-meningitis), a treatment group treated with antibiotic treatment (meningitis group), and a third group (aerobic exercise group) treated with antibiotics and aerobic exercise following LPS-induced meningitis. Data were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test, and the comparison between groups used the Bonferroni post-hoc test. The results showed that aerobic exercise significantly reduced MDA (p<0.001), NF-κB (p=0.035), and apoptosis (p=0.020) while increasing the serum levels of IGF-1 (p<0.001), eNOS (p=0.011), and BDNF (p=0.001) levels. Improvement in spatial memory was significant in the aerobic exercise group (p<0.001). This study suggested that aerobic exercise could be a promising adjunct therapy in meningitis management strategies, particularly due to its effect on improving spatial memory. Further clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings for clinical use.

Abstract

Endometriosis is a gynecological disorder characterized by chronic inflammation, anatomical changes, prolonged pain, and infertility. On the other hand, Phyllanthus niruri is recognized for its pharmacological effects, which might be beneficial in managing endometriosis. The aim of the study was to investigate the pharmacological effects of P. niruri as a potential therapy for endometriosis by using an animal model. An experimental laboratory study with randomized, controlled trial, pre-test, and post-test design using 40 female Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) was conducted at the Integrated Research and Testing Laboratory (LPPT) of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, from February to June 2023. Endometriosis was induced in female Wistar rats by suturing a 0.5 cm2 flap from the uterine horn to the peritoneal cavity. Changes in serum interleukin 1β (IL-1β), malondialdehyde (MDA), and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), before and after the treatment, were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining were used to evaluate lesion size and macrophage quantity. The results suggested that the P. niruri extract with a dose of 196 mg/200 g body weight (BW) could significantly attenuate serum IL-1β (p=0.004), MMP-9 (p=0.021), and MDA (p=0.021). Rats receiving the P. niruri extract (196 mg/200 g BW) had significantly higher macrophage counts (p=0.003), but similar lesion area (p=0.093) as compared with the negative control. In conclusion, P. niruri demonstrated promising therapeutical effects on endometriosis by modulating IL-1β, MDA, and MMP-9 levels, although the effect was not pronounced on macrophage counts and lesion area.

Abstract

Energy drinks are popular among various groups of people, such as teenagers and working individuals. These beverages are consumed to provide additional energy and improve focus. This research investigates the relationship between energy drinks and blood pressure and heart rate in students of the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia. The study used the open trial – randomized cross-over study method and collected primary data through experiments. The sample consisted of students from the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Airlangga, aged 19 to 22 years, with a normal body mass index ranging from 18.5 to 24.9. The systolic, diastolic, and heart rate values were measured before and after consuming energy drinks. A total of 38 research samples were used, including 22 males (57.8%) and 16 females (42.1%). Energy drinks such as Kratingdaeng and Extra Joss showed a significant increase in blood pressure. However, no significant changes were observed in heart rate. The results of the Wilcoxon statistical test, comparing systolic and diastolic conditions before and after consuming Extra Joss, showed p<0.0001. Abstract

Stem cells are unspecialized cells that differentiate into more specialized cells for various tissues in the human body. Stem cells have the characteristics and ability to become themselves by performing various mitoses and differentiating different cells. Stem cells also have great potential for tissue regeneration. Detection and isolation of specific cells is very important in understanding biological processes such as development, aging, regeneration, and cell pathogenesis. Therefore, stem cells are present as an invaluable therapeutic option. Before stem cells can be applied, it is important to know the characteristics of the specific function cells or phenotypic markers. Isolation and characteristics of stem cells on culture morphology or immunotaining on specific markers. Immunohistochemistry can provide a general description of the expression of markers in a cell under certain conditions. Surface markers are the basis for identifying the characteristics and isolation of stem cells. The basic characteristics of stem cells are one that influences the outcome of the therapy to be carried out. The presence of marker cell surface expressions can also be a differentiator in searching for the origin of the stem cells used6. MSC culture method was performed with DMEM + 5% HPL. UC-MSCs with phenotype differentiation were found to be CD73+, CD90+, CD105+, Lin- while the parameters found were IL-6, SDF-1, BDNF, FGF, NGF, IL-12p70, IL-23, IL-18, IL-10 , VEGF, EGF, IL-17A, IFN-, IL-1β, PDGF, MCP-1.The results obtained are in accordance with the standard content of UC-MSC cells which can be continued as cell research.

Abstract

Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk melihat relasi historis fungsional antara kenyataan sejarah sebagai peristiwa masa lalu dan pembentukan memori dengan historiografi sebagai sebuah naratif bangsa yang merupakan wujud dari kontestasi atas sejarah itu sendiri.____________________________________________________________Pajang as a kingdom and its society that once existed in post-glorious Maps and Demak Sultanate in Indonesian history does not get adequate place in the historiogrphy of Indonesia so far. Even though the name Jaka Tingkir is believed to be the same as the Sultan (H)Adiwijaya who is the first sultan of Pajang, widely known by the people, especially in Java. This paper discusses the exclusion and marginalization of the Pajang Sultanate from the Indonesian grand historical narrative, based on the assumption of a broken link between social memory as a cultural system of society and the tradition of Indonestan historiography. This paper aims to look at the functional historical relation between historical reality as a past event and the formation of memory with historiography as a national narrative which is a manifestation of contestation over history itself.
