Abstract

This study aims to review the ethnoscience studies in science education in Indonesia thematically. From 2010 to 2020, the databases contained 71 relevant articles of ethnoscience studies. These studies belonged to the content analysis theme parameters of method/design, sample, data collection, data analysis, topic, result, recommendation, and location. The results indicated that most of the ethnoscience studies explored the effect of integrating ethnoscience with the lessons to investigate students’ achievement and attitudes towards science. Correspondingly, the investigated studies mostly used Research and Development (R & D) and experimental research design. The preferred data collecting techniques were tests (multiple-choice/description), questionnaires, and observation. Moreover, seventh and eighth graders of junior high school commonly employed the argumentation activities in physics, chemistry, biology, and basic concept of science topics. This study suggests the teachers employ different methods (e.g., ethnoscience) to improve concept understanding, problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and motivation in learning science from the primary school level. Furthermore, resources from cultural activities in Indonesia are beneficial for integrating ethnoscience in learning.

Abstract

STEM learning has increasingly been implemented in higher education, particularly in science education programs. In the aftermath of the global health crisis, the learning process has transitioned to a new normal, significantly different from pre-crisis practices. Numerous changes and challenges have emerged in science learning, particularly in fostering collaboration among prospective teachers in higher education. This research explores the nature of collaboration among prospective science teachers through the integration of STEM learning, employing a qualitative research method with in-depth observation as the primary data collection technique. Observations were conducted directly and supported by video recordings to ensure comprehensive data collection, with collaborative practices assessed using collaborative learning rubrics. The findings reveal that science education students have improved their collaboration skills through STEM learning integration, showing greater comfort in direct discussions and hands-on investigative learning activities, although some topics still require online discussions facilitated by e-learning platforms. Consequently, a blended learning approach is identified as the most effective method for integrating STEM learning in the current era to enhance collaboration in science education. Future research could further investigate the integration of STEM learning using hybrid learning models to promote collaboration among students.

Abstract

This study aims to create a microcontroller-based hydrostatic pressure experiment tool in science education. The digital system makes the tools used more effective and time-efficient. The digital system used in this tool consists of a microcontroller, digital display (LCD), and the MS5637 Barometer sensor. This series of tools processes digital data into hydrostatic pressure, displayed on the LCD. The method used in this study is following Archimedes' principle. The independent variable in this study is the depth of the funnel thrust into the measuring cup, while the dependent variable is the hydrostatic pressure displayed on the LCD. The results showed that the hydrostatic pressure valuesobtained were close to theoretical calculations. Then, the r-squared result between Δh of water and hydrostatic pressure through experiments with a microcontroller (Arduino) is 0.9981. This value is good enough to show the proportion or percentage of hydrostatic pressure affected by Δh of water. Thus, experiments using this tool are quite effective in science learning.

Abstract

Abstract

This research analyzes the use of figurative language in the lyrics of the song “Let It Go” by Idina Menzel, which is widely known as a theme song of Disney’s “Frozen”. The study aims to identify and classify various types of figurative language, such as metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, idiom, alliteration, and symbolic expressions, and interpret their meanings using a qualitative descriptive approach. Drawing on Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory, the research decodes the song’s linguistic signs (signifier and signified) to explore how language shapes meaning, emotion, and imagery in the lyrics. The findings show that the lyrics are rich in figurative expressions that represent Queen Elsa’s inner transformation, emotional struggles, and the symbolism of freedom and empowerment. Hyperboles and personifications are used to enhance the imagery of Elsa’s magical powers, while similes and metaphors illustrate emotional depth and resilience. The study concludes that figurative language in “Let It Go” not only adds aesthetic value but also serves as a powerful medium to convey character development and thematic elements such as identity, self-acceptance, and liberation. This research highlights the importance of understanding figurative language in songs to grasp deeper meanings and emotional nuances.

Abstract

This study aims to identify trends in systems thinking research within the context of science education over the past decade and providing education researchers with a global perspective on the development of systems thinking. The bibliometric analysis research method is a quantitative approach used to analyze scientific literature to identify trends, publication patterns, collaborations between authors or institutions, and emerging research topics in a field of science.  The data used for bibliometric analysis is the research trend of systems thinking in science learning from 2014 to 2024, based on the Scopus database, utilizing the R Package Bibliometric and VosViewer Software. The obtained articles were then processed using thematic analysis techniques with the R Bibliometric Package to analyze primary information, annual scientific publications, article citations per year, total citations of top journals, Sankey diagrams, top author production, countries with the highest productivity, most productive affiliations, and thematic maps. The findings of this study indicate that research on systems thinking in science learning has experienced an annual growth rate of 9.6% and an average citation rate of 13.6 citations per document. Furthermore, it analyzes the thematic mapping of the obtained keywords, where the motor themes in this study such as curriculum, teaching, elementary school, student learning, and system theory are well-developed and essential for shaping research in systems thinking in science learning. The thematic mapping reveals a strong interconnection among three key themes: systems thinking, science learning, and elementary schools. These themes hold significant potential and are highly relevant for further exploration due to their high centrality, yet they remain relatively underexplored to date. The study of systems thinking skills in science learning should also consider previous research findings related to sustainable development goals, climate change, gender similarity, and conceptual frameworks.
