Abstract

Abstract

Background and purpose: Indonesia ranks the first highest mortality rate of COVID-19 in Southeast Asia with an average case fatality rate (CFR) of 2.7%. South Sumatra is ranked 14th out of 34 provinces in Indonesia, with a CFR value related to COVID-19 reaching 5.1%, per June 21, 2021. This study aims to determine the descriptive epidemiology of COVID-19 in Palembang City. Methods: This research used a descriptive epidemiology approach and spatial analysis with the geographic information system. Then the secondary data were collected from the Palembang City Surveillance Report from March 2020 to February 2021 with a total of 7,423 cases, as well as geographic data on the coordinates of health services for all hospitals and public health centers (PHCs) in Palembang City. Results: The data shows that the age group of 25 to 39 years old dominated the COVID-19 cases. The morbidity and mortality rates in men was higher than women, and much higher at the age of above 60 years old. The most dominant symptom in the deceased COVID-19 patients was shortness of breath and the comorbid history increased the risk of death for patients with COVID-19. The highest number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 was found in the sub-district with the highest population, including the PHC of Padang Selasa, Ilir Barat I (393 patients), while the lowest number of cases was reported in Karyajaya PHC, Kertapati (7 patients). Conclusion:This study highlights the need in preventing mature deaths of COVID-19 patients by prioritizing elderlies who suffered from comorbidities at the family level and health services to support the government programs.

The highest death rate was recorded in South Sumatra, namely 6.14 percent per 100 cases. Based on previous research in Indralaya, the percentage of NCDs such as hypertension reached 30%, where the proportion of female respondents with hypertension was known to be 26.7%. The targets for this activity were 15 mothers in Tunas Aur village and willing to take part in educational activities. The method used in this activity was empowering the target audience through CERDIK Mother Movement. The educational media used in the CERDIK mothers' movement are pocket books and health promotion calendars. The results of this service activity show that the media used can increase the knowledge of mothers. Visual media in the form of calendars that are connected to everyday activities are thought to be helpful because they allow mothers and families to continue receiving health education while they gaze at the calendar. This activity can spread knowledge on preventing NCDs as comorbid of covid-19. The community can continue this CERDIK movement to prevent NCDs, such as establishing smoke-free zones and exercise.

Abstract

Every workplace contains various potential hazards that can affect the health of workers, one of them is dust exposure. One of the dust exposures occurs in the working environment of the sand mine. Palembang City is an area flowed by the Musi River which is a place for sand mining in Palembang. This sand mining activity can pose a risk of exposure to dust such as PM10 and TSP. The purpose of this study was to analyze the environmental health risks due to dust exposure on sand collectors in Palembang. The EHRA method was used to take air samples at 19 measurement points to determine PM10 and TSP levels in the work area. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire with 74 respondents. The results showed that there were 2 points at risk due to PM10 exposure with the RQ value at Depot 1 of 5.4 and Depot 2 of 2.7. Meanwhile, TSP levels do not pose a health risk to sand collectors in Palembang with an RQ value ≤ 1. So risk management is needed by reducing the PM10 concentration to a safe limit of 1.81 mg / m³.

Abstract

During COVID-19, learning through Google Applications has become the first option to enable students, teachers, and lecturers to discuss lessons more easily. It only needs one Google account, and all applications can be utilized and explored. Various research has been conducted on that issue. However, few studies have focused on basic structure learning in higher education. Therefore, it is interesting to discover the Google applications emphasizing and their influence on learning English for Indonesian undergraduates. In particular, the research highlighted the utilization of Google Classroom, Google Meet, and Google Form in conducting the Basic Structure course for the 2nd-semester students of the English education program. The sample seized 40 students of the Basic Structure course and administered an explanatory sequential mixed-method design with descriptive and narrative analyses. Through English structure assignments and questionnaires, the research emphasized Google Applications, which supports students in achieving the best output and experiencing a different learning atmosphere. The results revealed that fifty per cent of the students indicated increasing achievement from the first to the second cycle, while forty-five percent indicated the opposite. The findings bring benefits in decreasing learning obstacles and obtaining alternatives to different free online applications.

Abstract

Natural inert dust has been used as a grain protectant since the ancient Aztecs of Mexico to this modern era. Natural inert dust is divided into three groups: the first group includes sand, kaolin, paddy husk ash, wood ash, and clay; the second group includes mineral dust; and the third group includes natural silicas such as diatomaceous earth and zeolite. Natural inert dust has a unique mechanism for killing insect pests. Inert dust particles penetrate the insects’ exoskeleton, causing dehydration through the cuticle. Relative humidity is a crucial factor affecting the efficacy of inert dust application. Inert dust has been traditionally used by farmers, which impacts the insects, such as decreasing population, no insect resistance, and being environmentally friendly. Problems of using inert dust include visible residues on grain, airborne dust, reduced flowability, bulk density reduction, and adverse effects on downstream processing machinery. Moreover, inert dust is a very light product, thus it may cause human respiratory illness. The inert dust can be applied to the smaller or larger storage containers. Natural silica can be readily integrated into modern agriculture as a pest management solution.
