Abstract

Expressive arts therapy, is a therapeutic approach that has been increasingly applied in various educational and mental health contexts. However, studies that specifically and systematically examine the application of expressive arts therapy within group counseling settings remain limited. This study aims to map and synthesize existing research findings on expressive arts therapy in the context of group counseling through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). A total of 53 scholarly articles published between 2015 and 2025 were analyzed based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer was conducted to identify thematic patterns, research trends, and conceptual linkages among topics. The findings indicate that previous studies have predominantly focused on creative arts therapy, expressive interventions, and psychosocial outcomes, while integration with the theoretical frameworks and practices of group counseling remains suboptimal. From a methodological perspective, most studies employed qualitative approaches, pilot studies, and program evaluations, whereas experimental studies and systematic reviews specifically addressing expressive arts therapy in group counseling are still scarce. These findings indicate the absence of an integrated model that incorporates expressive arts therapy into group counseling. This study therefore contributes by highlighting the need for the development of a more systematic and contextually grounded group counseling model based on expressive arts therapy.

Abstract

University students frequently experience existential concerns alongside subclinical psychological distress, including reduced meaning in life, depression, and anxiety. Meaning-centered group counseling based on logotherapy has been proposed as a preventive intervention; however, evidence for young adult populations remains limited. This study employed a Systematic Literature Review with Network Analysis (SLNA) conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines to examine the effectiveness and research landscape of meaning-centered group counseling for university students. A systematic search of the Scopus database (2015-2025) identified five controlled studies (N = 206) involving group-based logotherapy interventions for individuals aged 18-25 years. Meaning in life was the primary outcome, while depression, anxiety, and stress were secondary outcomes. Due to heterogeneity, data were synthesized using SWiM guidelines and complemented by a bibliometric keyword co-occurrence analysis of 47 Scopus-indexed articles using VOSviewer. The results indicate consistent and significant improvements in meaning in life (p < 0.05) with large effect sizes, accompanied by reductions in psychological distress. These findings support meaning-centered group counseling as an effective preventive intervention in university counseling settings.

Abstract

Group counseling is one of the core services in guidance and counseling designed to help individuals gain self-understanding, develop their potential, and cope with various personal, social, and academic challenges. One effective approach in conducting group counseling is the behavioral approach. This approach is grounded in the principle that human behavior is shaped through learning processes; therefore, maladaptive behaviors can be modified into more positive ones through practice and reinforcement. In its implementation, the behavioral approach employs several techniques such as reinforcement, modeling, role playing, behavior rehearsal, and systematic desensitization. Through group dynamics, individuals learn to imitate constructive behaviors, receive feedback from peers, and establish new habits that support psychological well-being. Thus, behavioral-based group counseling serves not only as a therapeutic medium but also as an effective social learning environment that fosters discipline, responsibility, and adaptive behavior among participants. Keywords: behavioral approach, learning process, positive behavior, social learning, psychological well-being

Abstract

During adolescence, individuals spend more time in social life outside the home, such as socializing with peers and socializing at school and in the community. Self-control is the ability of adolescents to control themselves. If self-control is successfully improved, then the self-control is high. Conversely, low self-control indicates that they are less able to control themselves. This study aims to test the effectiveness of agentic group guidance to improve self-control of Minangkabau ethnic adolescents. This study is a quantitative study with a quasi-experimental method with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design on 22 students of SMA Negeri 1 Batipuh who were divided into experimental and control groups. The research instrument was a Likert scale self-control questionnaire, analyzed using the N-Gain, Wilcoxon, and Mann Whitney tests. The results showed that the average pretest score of the experimental group was 131.63 increased to 154.38 in the posttest, with an N-Gain of 58.05 (quite effective category). Meanwhile, the control group increased from 124.91 to 158.18, with an N-Gain of 46.91 (less effective category). The Mann Whitney test produced Z = -2.66 and Sig. = 0.008 (< 0.05), indicating that there is a significant difference between the two groups.

Abstract

Older adulthood is a life phase marked by complex psychosocial changes, one of which is Empty Nest Syndrome, characterized by feelings of loneliness, loss of roles, and diminished meaning in life after adult children leave home. This study aims to examine the formation of group guidance and counseling using a logotherapy approach as a psychological intervention for older adults experiencing Empty Nest Syndrome. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, focusing on the development and implementation of logotherapy-based group counseling. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, documentation, and pre- and post-intervention assessments using the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Geriatric Depression Scale, and Loneliness Scale. The results indicate that group logotherapy counseling effectively enhances meaning in life, psychological well-being, and reduces feelings of loneliness among older adults. The effectiveness of the intervention is influenced by participant readiness, facilitator competence, optimal group size (6–10 participants), and the selection of appropriate settings and session schedules suited to older adults’ conditions. In conclusion, logotherapy-based group counseling can be used as an effective psychosocial intervention strategy to improve the quality of life of older adults experiencing Empty Nest Syndrome.

Abstract

The research is based on the importance of self-regulated learning (SRL) in supporting students' academic success, as they can set goals and evaluate their own learning process. However, in reality, a number of studies show that many students still have low SRL abilities. Furthermore, there are also indications of differences in SRL between males and females that need to be studied further, namely several findings that show significant differences, while other studies do not. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify differences in SRL based on gender at SMA Negeri 7 Padang. This study used a quantitative approach with a comparative method, involving 298 students as respondents, including 130 males and 168 females. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The findings of this study indicate that there is a significant difference between male and female students in terms of SRL, with female students scoring higher than male students (mean difference = -14.369). This shows that female students are better able to manage their own learning processes and are more responsible for their learning outcomes. These findings have important implications for guidance and counseling services in schools, especially in designing intervention strategies that are more suited to students' needs.
