Abstract

Effective instruction of fluid concepts in physics requires a deep understanding of students' preconceptions and the implementation of pedagogical strategies that promote conceptual change. This study aims to develop the Electronic Conceptual Development and Conceptual Change Text (E-CDCCText), a digital instructional resource designed to foster conceptual change in students’ understanding of fluid mechanics. Employing the Design and Development Research (DDR) methodology, the development followed the ADDIE model. Validation by five expert reviewers, supported by analysis using Facet software, confirmed the material’s quality in terms of content accuracy, structural coherence, narrative clarity, and media design. The E-CDCCText comprises seven structured sections that guide students through a systematic process of constructing and reconstructing scientific concepts, integrating both conceptual development and conceptual change frameworks. The content targets three core fluid concepts: hydrostatic pressure, buoyant force, and the principles underlying floating, suspending, and sinking. The implementation phase involved 64 tenth-grade students, whose conceptual understanding was assessed using a validated four-tier diagnostic test. Results demonstrated a significant enhancement in students’ scientific conceptions, indicating the efficacy of the E-CDCCText in reducing misconceptions. In conclusion, the E-CDCCText is a validated and effective digital instructional tool for supporting conceptual change and improving students’ understanding of fluid concepts in physics education. Keywords: conceptual change, E-CDCCText, fluid concept, instructional material

Abstract

Project-oriented laboratories (POLs) and project-based laboratories (PBLs) approaches have become important innovations in science education, providing more relevant learning experiences through real-world based projects. This study aims to evaluate the potential of POLs implementation in supporting science education integrated with sustainable development goals (SDGs) issues, particularly to develop creative ideas in solving environmental problems. In addition, this study also aims to identify the main challenges faced in the implementation of POLs and provide practical recommendations to optimize this approach. Through a systematic literature review based on Prisma 2020 guidelines, 34 articles from 1993 to 2024 were analyzed. The results showed that POLs are effective in improving students' technical, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. However, the integration of POLs with SDGs issues is still limited. Although some projects, such as the development of renewable energy systems, support SDG 7 (clean and affordable energy), most projects have not been strategically geared towards solving other global challenges, such as climate change mitigation (SDG 13) or waste management (SDG 12). The research identified key challenges in the implementation of POLs, including the need for technological infrastructure, intensive training for educators, and funding support. To maximize their impact, it is recommended that POLs actively integrate SDGs themes into project design and promote cross-disciplinary collaboration. This research confirms that POLs have great potential to support science education that not only results in academic achievement, but also tangible contributions to global sustainability

Abstract

Misconceptions in physics education pose significant challenges to student learning and conceptual understanding. This research aims to bridge gaps in understanding by systematically identifying and analyzing the diagnostics, causes, and remediation methods for misconceptions in physics among Indonesian high school students. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) following the PRISMA method, 61 articles were selected from databases such as Scopus and Google Scholar, focusing on publications between 2019 and 2024. The results reveal that static fluids emerged as the most frequently studied topic in misconception research, with common issues including the misunderstanding of buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure. Diagnostic tools were dominated by four-tier tests, which offer high accuracy and ease of analysis compared to other methods. The findings also highlight that the primary causes of misconceptions are rooted in students' intuitive thinking and teaching methods. Computer simulations were identified as one of the most effective remediation strategies, often employed alongside conceptual change texts and laboratory-based approaches. This study consolidates existing research and provides actionable insights for educators by highlighting effective diagnostic tools and strategies to design targeted interventions, foster deeper conceptual understanding, and improve learning outcomes in physics education.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of visual media in physics learning especially in static electricity and capacitors, and to identify the obstacles faced by teachers in using these visual media. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a literature review and analysis of data obtained through a questionnaire distributed to high school physics teachers in Bandung City. The data collected includes the use of various types of visual media, the purpose of their use, students' responses to visual media, and the obstacles faced in their implementation. The findings show that visual media such as PowerPoint, digital simulation (PhET), and animated videos are very effective in physics learning to help students understand abstract concepts, especially in capacitor material. Digital simulation, with an effectiveness rate of 82.4%, proved to be the most effective in explaining the concept of capacitors. The use of this visual media also has a positive impact on student motivation in learning. However, the main obstacles faced are the limitations of time, facilities, and technical skills of teachers in developing visual media. In conclusion, although the use of visual media is very beneficial, further support in the form of training, provision of facilities, and better time management is needed to optimize the application of visual media in physics learning.

Abstract

Abstract

Many studies have focused on students conceptions about the concepts of matter found that students from various levels of education have difficulty in comprehending the states and/or changes of matter. The present study aims to explore undergraduate students conception regarding the states and changes of matter. A total of 16 first to third year university students from physics education and science education department voluntarily participated in the study. We employed semi-structured interviews with each participant in order to elicit students conceptions and alternative conceptions regarding the states and changes of matter. Students were also prompted to make their own molecular illustration during the interview. The present study found that undergraduate students had difficulty in connecting between macroscopic and microscopic concept levels of the states and changes of matter. Furthermore, students developed several alternative conceptions in terms of temperature, volume, mass, and density of an object during phase changes. Undergraduate students also tended to give fewer explanation about transformation on liquid and gas phases due to poor understanding of particulate nature of liquid and gas, molecular bonds in particular. The study suggests the necessity of developing instruction with more contextual learning and the use of dynamic visual media to enhance undergraduate students' comprehensive understanding of the states and changes of matter.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to determine the profile of students regarding literacy skills for global warming material. This research uses a quantitative descriptive method to reveal the results of the research obtained based on students' responses to the 10 questions developed. This research was conducted at a school in Surabaya with a total of 15 respondents consisting of 4 men and 11 women. The results obtained were then analyzed using the Rasch Model with Winstep software to make it easier to map the level of instrument validity and the level of students' literacy skills. The results of this research reveal that the relationship between the instrument developed and students has very poor validity and reliability values with a value obtained of 0.22. However, the results of further analysis can map item difficulty levels and students' ability levels based on the Wright Map where students who have very high literacy skills are coded 01LK and 08PK while the most difficult item is Q2. Apart from that, students who have very poor literacy skills are good at coding 07LK while the easiest item is with code Q1. In this way, there is a need to improve problem instruments and further research to continue to develop the potential of scientific literature, not only on global warming material. Keywords: instruments, literacy scientific, measurements, rasch model. Abstract

Trade zakat is one of the religious obligations for Muslims who meet certain criteria in commercial activities. However, the level of zakat compliance among small-scale traders remains relatively low, often due to various internal and external factors. This study aims to identify and analyze the factors influencing the decision of grocery store traders in Waringin Jaya Village to pay trade zakat. The research employs a quantitative approach using a field survey method. Primary data were collected through questionnaires with a 5-point Likert scale, distributed to 80 respondents. Secondary data were sourced from relevant literature such as books, journals, and scientific articles. The data were analyzed using validity and reliability tests as well as factor analysis with SPSS software. The results show that religiosity, perception, and motivation are the main factors influencing traders’ decisions. Religiosity was the most dominant factor with a Total Variance Explained of 28.751%. This indicates that traders with strong religious values are more likely to fulfill their zakat obligations. The study highlights the importance of spiritual awareness and community-based religious education in increasing zakat compliance.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, students tend to have limitations that can cause them to experience misconceptions of teachers' concepts in an online setting. This becomes an insufficient basis for students to construct knowledge. Students can properly use one concept in a particular context and experience misconceptions on the same concept but in different contexts. This study aims to determine students' misconceptions about the concept of boiling, the percentage of misconceptions on each indicator of the boiling concept, and the causes of misconceptions in eleventh-grade (K-11) natural science students in one of the state high schools in Bandung Barat Regency. This study involved 92 students as samples in the study. The instrument used to analyze the concept of boiling misconceptions is the instrument was named BFT-Test (Boiling concept Four-tier). The misconceptions analysis of buffer solutions using the BFT-Test instrument showed that misconceptions occurred by 60 %, scientific conceptions by 13 %, and lack of knowledge by 27 %. Most misconceptions occur in analyzing the effects of pressure at the boiling point, which is 65 %. Based on this research results, the teachers are expected in the online learning process during the COVID-19 pandemic to link the material taught with concepts that exist in students' daily lives so that students easily capture the material and students remember the concepts in each given material.
