Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine whether there are any misconceptions among first-year students regarding the concepts of heat and temperature. This study employs a descriptive research design. The sample used in this study consists of 224 first-year students from both public and private universities in the cities of Singkawang, Bima, Madiun, and the districts of Sumedang, Sintang, and Bandung. Data were collected through a g-form using a four-tier test instrument. The research results indicate that the percentage of misconceptions among students on the concepts of temperature and heat is highest in the sub-topic "Objects with higher temperature definitely have more heat content compared to objects with lower temperature," reaching 62.1%, and the lowest misconception in the sub-topic "Water at a temperature of 0°C has entirely turned into ice," reaching 40.6%. It is hoped that these findings can be utilized by lecturers and teachers in addressing the subtopic of heat and temperature, which is known to have many possible misconceptions. As a result, educators can employ effective instructional strategies to address their students' misunderstandings about heat and temperature

Abstract

This research based on the importance of argumentation skill for students. Argumentation skill is one of thinking skill that must be reached by student to fulfill the competence standard of highschool graduate. One of the effort to expand student’s argumentation skills is a learning process that fasilitate students to discuss and argue in a group. Model of generating arguments through science investigation method emphasizes learning activities in order to make students involved in enhancing argumentation skills. The purpose of this research is to get a picture of enhanced argumentation skills and student’s aspect of argumentation as the effect of model of generating arguments through science investigation method applied on heat subject. The method of this research is pre-experiment with pretest and posttest group design. The instruments of the research covered argumentation skills test, observation sheet, and interview. The subjects of the research are 33 10th grade students in a high school at Bandung who were collected by cluster random sampling technique. To see the enhancement of student’s argumentation skills, we used normalized gain as the calculation technique (g). The result of the research showed that the enhancement of argumentation skills is on moderate level. Enhancement of argumentation skills aspects (claim, enclose and anilyze data, make justification, and support) is on moderate level. The conclusion showed that model of generating arguments through science investigation method enhanced student’s argumentation skills.

Abstract

This Inquiry and project-based learning models play an essential role in developing 21st-century skills, especially the development of creativity for prospective physics teacher students (PPTs). Developing and integrating these two models requires a needs analysis as the first step of development. Therefore, this study aims to conduct a needs analysis for developing a level inquiry model with project assignments. This research uses a descriptive study. The needs assessment study method with a convergent analysis approach is used in this study. Data sources in this study include curriculum documents in the form of Semester Lesson Plan (SLP) and practicum guidance modules for introductory physics courses. Perception data was also collected from respondents from 33 PPTs and lecturers of introductory physics courses. The data collection techniques used were documentation, questionnaires and interviews. The results of the study concluded that the curriculum for introductory physics lectures contained scientific and creative skill competencies for PPTs. However, lecturers still dominate learning, and physics practicum activities have not yet led to an appropriate inquiry learning process and project learning is rarely implemented. The creativity of PPTs has not been optimized in learning physics. Lecturers and students responded that developing the Level of Inquiry with Project Assignments Model (LoI-PA) is very important to increase the creativity of PPTs. The LoI-PA hypothetical model is presented in the discussion of this study. However, further research is still needed to develop valid learning steps and integrate information technology into the learning model steps.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the role and impact of refutational text on student conceptions and learning outcomes. Utilizing meta-analysis methods, this study sourced articles from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, covering publications from 2001 to 2023. The article selection process adhered to the PRISMA technique, implemented systematically in several stages to ensure rigor and transparency. The meta-analysis used the random-effects model to account for variability among studies, offering a more generalized understanding of the effects of refutational text across different contexts and populations. The results were synthesized through a Forest plot, revealing a standard mean difference with a P value of <0.01, indicating a statistically significant effect of refutational text on students’ conceptions. This suggests that the use of refutational text substantially influences learning, particularly in addressing misconceptions. Additionally, the study highlighted that while the potential for applying refutational texts in Indonesia is promising, the number of global and internationally indexed publications on this topic remains limited. This lack of extensive research limits the broader application of refutational text in educational contexts. However, the findings suggest that refutational text holds significant promise for science education, especially for topics where students commonly hold misconceptions about difficult concepts. Further research is recommended to explore its full potential and to encourage the publication and wider application of refutation texts in science education.       Keywords: refutation text, meta-analysis, conception, conceptual change.

Abstract

Project-based Learning (PjBL) was an active learning approach where students undertake in-depth investigations of topics or issues, aiming to produce tangible products or solutions. This literature mapping aims to offer an overview of the existing literature on project-based learning in Physics Education via bibliometric analysis. Utilizing the Scopus database, a data search was conducted, yielding 180 documents, with limitations applied based on specific criteria. Publications with the highest citation counts were identified from international journals indexed by Scopus, with a focus on quartile 3 journals. Using VOSviewer visualization, eight clusters were identified, highlighting the interconnectedness of project-based learning in physics education with courses, models, problems, and ability. Additionally, novel perspectives were explored to expand the application of PjBL in physics education. Future research opportunities lie in implementing PjBL in physics education to foster critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, creative thinking, student creativity, and metacognitive skills. Furthermore, future research endeavors could integrate PjBL with other methodologies, such as laboratory activities or STEM approaches. This analysis provides valuable insights into the current landscape of project-based learning in Physics Education and offers directions for future research endeavors.

Abstract

The research on increasing the level of understanding of the kinetic theory of gases concepts for prospective physics teacher students through interactive demonstration methods with the help of a variety of visual media has been carried out. This study aims to determine the increase in the level of students’ understanding of the kinetic theory of gases concept through interactive demonstration methods with the help of various visual media. The method used was pre-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design. The research subjects were 76 prospective physics teacher students at a university in the city of Makassar, South Sulawesi. The test instrument used was a concept understanding level test in the form of an essay consisted of three questions. The results showed that most of the students reached a complete understanding level of the kinetic theory of gases after attending a basic physics course through interactive demonstration methods with the help of various visual media. Thus, the level of students’ understanding of kinetic theory of gases concept has increased through interactive demonstration methods with the help of various visual media.

Abstract

Understanding Physics Concepts is a concern for every learning process and physics practicum. The development of various physics practicum concepts in the Inquiry Lab or Project Based Lab models contributes to the Students' Concept Understanding Level. This study was conducted to determine the level of conceptual understanding of students on the concept of fluid through project-based laboratory. The method used is pre-experimental with one group pretest and posttest design. The subjects of this study were 22 prospective physics teacher students at one of the universities in Banda Aceh City. The test instrument used is a level test of concept understanding in the form of a stratified description consisting of the ability to explain the concept (P), the ability to determine the laws of physics (Q), ability to provide additional case examples of related laws (R) and define those laws (S). The results showed that students achieved an understanding of fluid concepts at the level of complete understanding (CU) after participating in a project-based laboratory. Therefore, it can be concluded that the level of understanding of physics concepts effectively increases to achieve complete understanding through project-based laboratory.
