Abstract

This study aims to examine the Scientific Inquiry Literacy (SIL) of in-service physics teachers in West Java. focusing on three key aspects: knowledge. skills. and attitudes toward scientific inquiry. The research addresses the need to understand teachers' readiness to implement inquiry-based instruction as part of quality science education. A descriptive survey design was employed involving 27 physics teachers from various cities and regencies in West Java. Participants were selected through purposive sampling based on their active teaching status and academic background. Data were collected via an online questionnaire using the Scientific Inquiry Literacy Instrument (SILI). which comprises 35 multiple-choice items on knowledge. 39 on skills. and 30 attitude statements. Rasch Model analysis was applied to evaluate person and item measures. reliability. and item difficulty. with Wright Map outputs used to visualize the distribution of teacher abilities. Results showed that the overall SIL of participating teachers was relatively high. as indicated by a mean person measure above the item mean across all aspects. Among the three aspects. the attitude aspect (AA) yielded the highest person measure (1.57). followed by knowledge (KA) at 0.50 and skills (SA) at 0.13. Despite these strengths. the data revealed a mismatch between teacher ability and item difficulty in some areas. suggesting a potential ceiling effect and room for improvement. particularly in applying complex inquiry skills. While physics teachers in this study demonstrate a generally strong level of scientific inquiry literacy. the use of non-probability sampling and a small sample size limits the generalizability of the findings. Targeted professional development is recommended to strengthen teachers’ competencies in complex inquiry practices and to support the continued integration of inquiry-based learning in physics classrooms.     Keywords: scientific inquiry literacy. inquiry-based learning. physics teachers.

Abstract

This study aims to develop the questionnaire of students’ perception about the real and virtual refutational laboratory which is a misconception remediation method adapted from refutation text using a new approach i.e., laboratory. This study was a quantitative description that involved 53 students (12 males and 41 females) chosen using purposive sampling. The students were initially given a trial questionnaire after receiving a misconception remediation treatment using a real and virtual laboratory method in different classes. The validity and reliability of the instrument were analyzed using Rasch Model. The analysis result reveals that the Cronbach's alpha was 0.61 (enough category), the item reliability was 0.82 (good category) and the person reliability was 0.31 (less variance in students' answers). Meanwhile, based on the validity test, the raw variance was obtained from measures of 29.4% reaching the minimum criteria range of 20%. The Differential Item Function (DIF) test based on gender results revealed that an item was biased (p=0.0435), whereas, there is no biased instrument based on the kind of class in the Differential Item Function test study. The analysis demonstrates that after correcting and deleting some items that did not match based on its criteria, this instrument may be used to gather information on students’ perception regarding the implementation of laboratory learning methods or the like in a valid and reliable way by the researchers and teachers.

Abstract

Abstract

The study was a qualitative research, employing ontological and epistemological approaches to explore the philosophy of global warming. Questionnaires and interviews were conducted with students and teachers, which examined whether the current implementation of global warming education aligns with ontological and epistemological perspective and propose recommendations to improve global warming education in science lesson. The ontological perspective begins with literature review that examines the unique of greenhouse gasses characterized as heat traps, focusing on microscopic view of vibrational modes of molecules and their impact on global warming. Furthermore, the epistemological perspective explored how researchers validate the scientific understanding of global warming and its impact on the environment. In addition, the questionnaire result showed that various teaching method, such as experiment, video, PhET simulation, teacher explanation, and internet exploration, were used. But most of students never see the microscopic view of vibrational greenhouse gas molecules that trap the heat. Students also did not evaluate and validate the influence of greenhouse gas concentration on increasing system temperature as epistemological approach. Therefore, the lesson of global warming especially the concept of greenhouse effect, needs an approach that integrates ontological and epistemological perspective, such integrating modeling or simulation in microscopic scale into experimental activities (bifocal modeling).
