Abstract

ABSTRACTTitle: Spatial Analysis of Malaria Transmission Dynamics  in the Highland Areas of Muara Enim RegencyBackground: Malaria remains one of the world's major health problems due to its potential vectors, with a total of 241 million cases in 2020 spread across 85 malaria-endemic countries, each with varying transmission dynamics. Muara Enim Regency was declared malaria-free in 2024, but research is still needed to analyze the spatial dynamics of malaria transmission in the regency to ensure the malaria-free status is maintained. Methods: This study used a survey method designed based on a geographic information system (GIS) and employed secondary data. The secondary data consisted of malaria cases from 2021–2023 in two subdistricts: Lawang Kidul and Tanjung Agung. Data were obtained from the Muara Enim Health Office, Tanjung Enim Community Health Center (Lawang Kidul Subdistrict), and Tanjung Agung Community Health Center. Results: Spatial analysis provided data on the distribution of malaria cases, mining areas, swamp areas, plantation areas, river flow areas, and vegetation (bushland). Based on this spatial analysis, areas with a concentration of malaria cases tend to be near swamps and rivers. This indicates a relationship between specific geographical conditions (wet and water-rich areas) and increased malaria cases, as these locations serve as potential habitats for malaria vector mosquitoes. Most of the area comprises plantations, followed by rice fields, swamps, and bushland. These vegetative areas can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. From univariate spatial analysis, it was observed that regions with high case numbers are generally in lowland areas or areas with access to water sources like rivers and swamps. Conclusion: The primary dynamics of malaria cases in Muara Enim Regency are influenced by its status as a highland area. The study concluded that swamps and rivers pose risk factors for malaria transmission dynamics, highlighting the need for government anticipation to maintain the malaria elimination status.

Abstract

Stunting in children under five is a crucial public health issue in developing countries, including Indonesia. Poor environmental sanitation has been identified as a significant factor influencing the incidence of stunting. This study aims to review the latest literature linking environmental sanitation conditions with the prevalence of stunting. The method used in this research is a literature review, utilizing several research articles from the past five years obtained from various scientific journal sources. The type of study is an observational analytic survey with a case-control design. The research was conducted by comparing two groups: cases and controls. Based on the literature review, poor environmental sanitation, particularly access to clean water and adequate sanitation facilities, has a significant relationship with the high prevalence of stunting in children across various countries. Providing clean water, proper sanitation facilities, and hygiene education programs have been proven to reduce stunting rates. Improving access to environmental sanitation and hygiene is a critical step in reducing the prevalence of stunting. Sanitation interventions should be a priority in public health programs in developing countries.

Abstract

An alternative method for controlling Spodoptera frugiperda applies entomopathogenic fungi (EPF). The present research aimed to determine the impact of the endophytic EPF  on the growth and development of S. frugiperda. Twenty molecularly identified isolates of the endophytic EPF were used in seed treatments with the fungal suspension 1 × 1010 conidia.mL-1. The endophytic EPF that colonized corn leaves eaten by the neonate S. frugiperda larvae was able to significantly decrease the body weight of the larvae and pupae. The endophytic EPF could prolong the developmental time of all instar larvae and pupae.  The endophytic EPF could raise larval and pupal mortality and reduce the ability of adults to emerge from pupae,  and decrease egg laying by females.  The lowest percentage of adult emergence was observed in the adults from larvae consuming corn leaves colonized with Beauveria bassiana JaGiP and JgSPK isolates, which were 34.67% and 24%, respectively. Consequently, a reduced adult emergence could lead to a high cumulative death rate of 76% from larvae to adults. Finally, the endophytic EPFs negatively affect S. frugiperda growth and development.  B. bassiana JaGiP and JgSPK isolates are the most pathogenic fungi in inhibiting the growth and development of S. frugiperda. They are promising candidates for controlling S. frugiperda in the corn field.

Abstract

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new human-infected coronavirus causing respiratory problems. The COVID-19 can affect people of all ages, but those with a record of chronic disease (comorbidity) are at higher risk of poor outcomes with the COVID-19. This study aimed to review COVID-19 preventative behavior in diabetes patients. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the comorbidities that aggravates COVID-19 in patients. Such patients are at risk of deteriorating critical conditions in the intensive care units (ICUs) and even death. Prevention is the best measure to avoid COVID-19, although it is currently considered adequate. This article reviewed 22 papers focusing on COVID-19, DM, COVID-19 in DM patients, COVID-19 preventive behavior, and COVID-19 knowledge, attitude, and practice in patients with chronic disease, while primary focusing on DM. It is revealed that diabetes patients at high risk of COVID-19 need to practice good preventive behaviors. Furthermore, it emphasizes that improving knowledge, encouraging positive attitudes, and implementing good COVID-19 preventive behaviors in DM patients requires education and access to the COVID-19 related health information.

Abstract

COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, a new coronavirus discovered in 2019. WHO declared COVID-19 is a respiratory disease causedby SARS-CoV-2 as a pandemic that the detection level of cases changed daily, and it can track almost in real-time. This paper used a narrative literaturereview to address issues of urban quality and lack of exercise. The specific aim was to discuss the concept of a healthy city, indicate a new urban model, andadvocate for the increased use of bicycles, outdoor gym/outdoor exercise, walking to reducing pollution, and improving physical, psychological, and social fitness. A healthy city can improve residents’ health by improving conditions of life to face COVID-19 pandemics. It needs the local capacity to prevent thespread of the diseases and design public health concepts concerning the built environment and contemporary towns in a new urban model. Dialogue opportunities in public health can provide essential guidance for designers (architects and town planners), decision-makers, public health experts, and health agencies locally, promoting the actions and policies to transform the city into a healthier neighborhood and salutogenesis.

Abstract

Passive smoking is a significant risk factor for stunting in children, highlighting the urgent need for effective public health measures. This study aimed to investigate the association between passive smoking and stunting in children aged 0 months-7 years. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple online databases, including PubMed, ProQuest, Science Direct, Willey Online Library, Sage Journal, Cambridge University Press, and Oxford Academic. The quality of included articles reporting observational studies was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skill Programme (CASP) checklist, presenting data through narrative synthesis. Findings suggested that passive smoking significantly contributed to the risk of stunting in children. Most reviewed articles were from low-income countries and reported studies with various age groups, demographic characteristics, and self-reported measures. Establishing a causal relationship remains challenging, with 99% of these studies using a cross-sectional design. Based on these findings, further study into this relationship using more comprehensive study designs is necessary. Interventions for mothers and children experiencing stunting should also be prioritized to reduce risk factors and strengthen protective factors.
