Abstract

Malaria is one of the leading causes of disease and death worldwide. Around 2.4 billion people are at risk of malaria. In Indonesia, malaria is still a serious public health problem and is often found outside Java and Bali. The risk of malaria is determined by many factors, especially the type of Anopheles mosquito species, human behavior, and the presence of malaria parasites. A change of any of the factors will affect the risk of malaria. The purpose of this study is to see an overview of the problem of malaria the factors that cause malaria and how to prevent and treat malaria in Indonesia and the world. This research method is a descriptive observational study using a literature review design, with databases Google Scholar. The search results that meet the criteria are then analyzed for articles. Malaria is still a disease with high cases in Indonesia every year. Malaria can occur due to several factors. These factors are behavioral factors and community attitudes (night activities, use of mosquito repellent, use of mosquito nets), home environment factors (existence of cattle pens, presence of bushes, and presence of watery rice fields); physical environmental factors of the house (temperature, humidity, the presence of wires in the ventilation, the presence of the ceiling of the house, and the density of the walls of the house).

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 in Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients are at higher risk for severe complications than people without DM. Preventive behaviour is the best way to avoid COVID-19 infection for DM patients due to its bad impact, such as severe symptoms requiring intensive care, leading to death. Objective: This study aims to analyse the COVID-19 preventive behaviour among DM comorbidity patients in Palembang. Method: The cross-sectional study was conducted from April 2021 to May 2021 using a questionnaire to diabetic patients at six community health centres in Palembang. The questionnaire has four sections: patient characteristics, knowledge, attitude, and COVID-19 prevention behaviour. A proportional random sampling technique was used to determine the number of samples according to the data on diabetic patients in each health centre. The total sample was 183 respondents from 1.266 total population diabetic patients in six community health centres. Respondents were diabetic patients aged ³ 18 years old and willing to fill out the questionnaire. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate statistical analyses were used to analyse the data. Results: More respondents have good knowledge (50.3%), negative attitude (57.3%), and poor COVID-19 preventive behaviour (53.0%). The findings revealed a statistical significance between knowledge (P-value = 0.0001), attitude (P-value = 0.0001), and educational status (P-value = 0.0001) with COVID-19 preventive behaviour. Furthermore, knowledge is the most determinant factor of COVID-19 preventive behaviour (PR= 7.597, 95% CI: 3.701 – 15.597). Conclusion: According to this study, diabetic patients with poor knowledge are at greater risk of having poor COVID-19 prevention behaviours. COVID-19 prevention programs, especially health education programs at the community health centre, need to be improved to ensure that diabetic patients adopt reasonable and appropriate COVID-19 prevention practices.

Abstract

Introduction: Until the end of 2020, West Bangka Regency was the only one that has not been certified for malaria elimination, so that it has an impact on achieving malaria elimination at the provincial level of Bangka Belitung. The West Bangka Regency's Electronic Malaria Surveillance Information System (E-SISMAL) showed eight indigenous malaria cases and no malaria vector control reports in 2020. The indigenous cases in West Bangka Regency have prevented malaria elimination. This study aims to evaluate malaria vector control to help eliminate malaria. Methods: This research was a qualitative evaluation study with selected informants. E-SISMAL in West Bangka Regency was studied and was analysed with Nvivo 12 Plus for Windows. The variables studied were context, input, process, and product. Focus groups, in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and photovoice were used to collect data. Results and Discussion: The area's topography, miner's behaviour, lack of manual vector reporting, and extensive ex-mining pits were discussed. Each evaluation variable was constrained by the process (supporting data collection and sub-variables) and product (data coverage of malaria vector control in E-SISMAL). Conclusion: It can be concluded that each evaluation variable constrains malaria vector control in West Bangka Regency.

Abstract

More than 1.5 billion people or 24% of the world's population experience worm infections that are transmitted through the soil. Worm infections that occur can damage the nutritional status in the form of anemia in all children, especially school age. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between nutritional anemia and the incidence of helminthiasis. This research method is an analytical observational with a cross-sectional design. The population in the study was conducted on elementary school children in the working area of the Air Biliti Health Center, Musi Rawas Regency in 2021. The sample in this study was 98 with simple random sampling at five schools in the working area of the Air Biliti Health Center. The study was conducted in March 2021. The results of this study showed that most of the proportions of negative helminth infections were 60 (61.2%), not anemic 71 (72.4%), Class VI 39 (39.8%), 11 years old 32 (32,7 % ), female 50 (51.0%), high parental education 53 (54.1%), farmer occupation 61 (62.2%), income 50 (51.0%). The results of the analysis of the significant relationship between nutritional anemia (p value 0.000, OR = 6.500) and infection rates in elementary school-aged children in the work area of Air Biliti Health Center, Musi Rawas Regency. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the importance of maintaining environmental cleanliness and personal hygiene, coupled with the habit of taking a worm medicine and attention from parents to reduce helminth infections that cause children to experience nutritional anemia.

Abstract

Background: Soil-transmitted helminth infection (STH) is a parasite infection that involves humans being infected with roundworms by route of soil contamination. One billion individuals are infected with worms, including 568 million school-age children. Helminthiasis in elementary school-aged children was not documented in Musi Rawas Regency. This study's goal was to identify if not wearing footwear increases the incidence of parasitic infection. Methods: The research was a cross-sectional survey, followed by statistical analysis. The study involved elementary school-aged students in Tuah Negeri District, Musi Rawas Regency, in 2021 and at least 200 participants. This study sample consisted of 108 with a purposive sampling method. This study utilized questionnaires and stool examinations using the Kato Katz method. Chi-square and multivariate logistic regression were used for statistical analysis. Results: Positive helminth infections amounted to 37,1% of the total (n=108). STH was comprised of 17.6% Ascaris lumbricoides, 9.3% Trichuris trichiura, and 25.9% hookworms. The finding of this research demonstrated a substantial (p = 0.000) relationship between the use of footwear and the advent of parasites. The logistic regression analysis results revealed that the most critical variable influencing the incidence of helminthiasis was not wearing any footwear. Conclusions: The study's findings suggest a correlation between footwear use and the risk of worm infection; as a result, it was recommended that children be thoroughly educated on personal hygiene, specifically footwear use, when using the bathroom.

Abstract

Background: The requirement for malaria elimination to be recognized is to prove API lower than 1 per 1000 in the population, together with no indigenous case. Lahat Regency is an area of low-endemicity for malaria, where the target for elimination is projected for 2024. Since 2019, Lahat Regency has received socialization about E-SISMAL, which was developed as a web-based basis to speed up the reporting process. However, there are still delays in reporting malaria on E-SISMAL. Methods: Descriptive research with a qualitative approach was designed. The study subjects were the malaria person in charge, the head of seven selected community health centers (Puskesmas) and the Lahat District Health Office. Primary data came from observation, focus group discussion (FGD) and in-depth interviews with eighteen informants selected by the purposive sampling method. Results: The available inputs are inadequate, such as the human resource education was not up to standard, the internet network was not smooth, and there were no guidelines on E-SISMAL in the health centers. Malaria person in charge does not understand how to use E-SISMAL. In the process, there was the involvement of cross-sectoral and networked establishments. The output shows that the report indicators on E-SISMAL are not up to standard with less than 80%. Conclusions: The use of E-SISMAL in the Lahat district has not been maximized. It has an impact on delays in reporting. It is recommended that training and practice of E-SISMAL occur to improve officers' ability through socialization and that the Lahat Health Office establishes partnerships with telecommunications companies to ensure the smooth running of the network. Developing specific guidelines on E-SISMAL and a mobile phone-based malaria surveillance information system to speed up the malaria reporting process in the Lahat district is also advisable.

Abstract

Background: Malaria is still one of the main infectious diseases of concern in the world. Lahat Regency is a moderate malaria-endemic area in South Sumatra, where there are still several villages with an API value above 1 and indigenous cases, although the average API value in all health facilities is below 1. Methods: Quantitative research with a case-control design was employed. The sampling technique used stratified random sampling with year strata, namely 2018, 2019 and 2020 with 50 case respondents and 100 control respondents. The total number of samples collected was 150. Case respondents were people who suffered from malaria and are recorded in the Malaria Surveillance Information System in the working area of the community health center, which has a village with an API value of 1 and the presence of indigenous cases. Control respondents were the closest neighbours of cases with the same age characteristics as the case. This study aimed to identify and analyse risk factors for preventive behaviour related to malaria incidence in the endemic area of the Lahat Regency. Results: : Bivariate analysis revealed that the habit of using insect repellent was connected with the incidence of malaria in the endemic region of Lahat Regency, with a p-value of 0.042 and an odds ratio of 2.160 in the endemic area. The results of multivariate analysis showed that the most dominant risk factor was the habit of using mosquito repellent. Conclusions: The habit of using mosquito repellent is a risk factor for malaria incidence in endemic areas of the Lahat Regency. It is necessary to increase individual self-prevention behaviour and counselling activities regarding preventive behaviour by local health service facilities.
