Abstract

This study develops a conceptual model of GLOCAREEN, a glocal character and environmental education framework grounded in Madurese local wisdom for primary schools. The study addresses the limited integration between global environmental education frameworks and culturally rooted pedagogical practices in primary education. A conceptual qualitative approach was employed through reflective synthesis and thematic analysis of academic literature published between 2018 and 2025, combined with interpretive analysis of Madurese cultural values such as rokat tase’, gotong royong, and the moral philosophy of ta’ abhenta pote mata and abhenta pote tolang. The findings indicate that glocal education enables the integration of global sustainability principles with local ethical systems, resulting in contextual learning experiences that strengthen students’ ecological awareness and character development. The GLOCAREEN model consists of three core dimensions: global environmental awareness, local cultural embodiment, and hybrid pedagogy. This model contributes theoretically to educational glocalization discourse and pedagogically to the design of contextual environmental learning in primary education.

Abstract

This systematic literature review examines the effects of ethnomathematics-based approaches on numeracy and mathematical reasoning skills among elementary school students. The review analyzed 18 empirical studies and meta-analyses published between 2022 and 2025 to capture recent evidence aligned with contemporary educational contexts and pedagogical practices. Using PRISMA guidelines, quantitative and qualitative findings from quasi-experimental, mixed-method, and meta-analytic studies were synthesized. This review addresses a notable research gap, as recent literature has not comprehensively examined the combined impact of ethnomathematics on both numeracy and mathematical reasoning at the elementary level. The findings consistently demonstrate that ethnomathematics-based instruction significantly improves students’ numeracy achievement and mathematical reasoning abilities. Meta-analytic results indicate strong to very strong effect sizes (ES = 1.22–1.42) on mathematical achievement. Culturally contextualized learning also enhances conceptual understanding, critical thinking, collaboration skills, and learning motivation. Positive effects are reported across grade levels and cultural contexts, with moderate to high improvements in numeracy outcomes. Various implementation modalities, including interactive digital media, traditional games, STEAM-oriented instruction, and culturally relevant learning modules, show high instructional validity and effectiveness. However, several studies exhibit methodological limitations, such as small sample sizes, limited use of control groups, and insufficient longitudinal analysis. Future research should prioritize large-scale and longitudinal studies, alongside systematic teacher professional development, to support the sustainable integration of ethnomathematics in elementary mathematics education.

Abstract

Civics education in elementary schools often faces challenges due to conventional approaches that fail to optimally foster students' critical thinking skills. This study aims to identify and analyze the potential integration of Wordwall media, the Design Thinking approach, and local wisdom in enhancing critical thinking in Civics education. This research employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, reviewing articles published between 2015–2025 retrieved from databases such as Google Scholar, DOAJ, Scopus, and Garuda. Selected articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using content analysis techniques to identify recurring themes, patterns, and research gaps. The findings show that Wordwall effectively improves concept comprehension and student engagement, Design Thinking fosters collaboration and problem-solving, while local wisdom strengthens the relevance of Pancasila values in students’ daily lives. However, very limited research integrates all three elements within the context of Civics education. This study recommends developing an innovative learning model that combines these approaches to meet the demands of the Merdeka Curriculum and shape students with critical, reflective, and value-oriented character traits. The results of this review serve as a conceptual foundation for educators and curriculum developers in designing more contextual and meaningful learning strategies.

Abstract

AbstractMathematics is a fundamental science that extends beyond the classroom and plays a crucial role in daily life, including within religious contexts, like the principle of Ukhuwah Islamiyah in Islam. Divergent perspectives often overlook this principle, which aims to unite Muslims, thereby impacting children's understanding of diversity. This study explores how mathematical concepts can be interpreted through the lens of Ukhuwah Islamiyah to reinforce both the principle and mathematical thinking. Using a qualitative method with an autoethnographic approach, the researcher (first author) reflects on personal experiences related to Qur'anic and Hadith teachings. Data were collected through narrative writing, narrative inquiry, document analysis, and expert interviews and validated using trustworthiness and authenticity criteria. The findings highlight various mathematical concepts linked to Ukhuwah Islamiyah, such as numbers and operations, geometry (lines and angles), building nets, and the alignment of lines and angles in congregational prayer. These insights provide a basis for integrating Islamic values into elementary mathematics education, fostering meaningful learning experiences. In conclusion, these mathematical elements provide valuable opportunities for classroom instruction, promoting character development, enhancing mathematical reasoning, and reinforcing the principle of Ukhuwah Islamiyah. Keywords: mathematics education, Islamic teachings, ukhuwah islamiyah.

Abstract

This study proposes a pedagogical model, “Local Climate Detectives,” to integrate global epistemology with students’ local experiences in primary science education. The study addresses the gap between universal scientific knowledge and contextual learning in responding to climate change challenges (SDG 13). A qualitative conceptual approach was employed through a systematic literature review, guided by Robertson’s Glocalization framework. The analysis focused on the mechanisms of interpenetration and mutual shaping between global and local knowledge systems. The result of this study is a theoretical construction of the OONAR learning model (Orientation–Observation–Negotiation–Action–Reflection) as an operational framework for glocal learning. Within this model, the Correlation Reasoning stage is positioned as a key epistemic process that connects locally generated data (e.g., environmental observations) with global scientific references. This integration is designed to foster resilient ecological reasoning and support collective decision-making grounded in local socio-cultural values. The study concludes that the proposed model provides a coherent framework for developing students’ climate literacy and glocal identity, positioning them as active contributors to community-based ecological justice.

Abstract

Reading motivation is a crucial factor in learning Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), particularly in diaspora contexts that face linguistic and cultural challenges. BIPA reading instruction in Mindanao still tends to be linguistically oriented and has not systematically integrated glocalization contexts. This study began with the need to develop a glocalization-based “motivate” phase within the MAGANDA (Motivation, Gleefulness, and Appreciation) learning model to strengthen engagement and reading readiness among diaspora students. This study aims to describe the practice of glocalization in the “motivate” phase in the development of the MAGANDA learning model and its contribution to the reading motivation of BIPA diaspora students in Mindanao. The study used a qualitative research and development (R&D) approach with the 4D model framework. The study focused on the design stage, using a descriptive strategy. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis with teachers, students, and evaluators in the BIPA diaspora community in Mindanao. Data analysis used thematic analysis with source triangulation. The study's results reveal two main findings. First, the practice of glocalization in the “motivate” phase is carried out through the integration of children's songs as cultural bridging, which has been proven to significantly reduce affective barriers (anxiety) and build a sense of national identity closeness. This strategy activates local cultural schemata while introducing the Indonesian language contextually. Second, the “motivate” phase increases student engagement, recognition, and self-efficacy before entering reading activities. Responses from students, teachers, and evaluators indicate increased self-confidence and readiness to learn compared to conventional learning. The integration of glocalization in the initial phase of learning serves as a strategy for managing affective factors in second language acquisition. Thus, the “motivate” phase in the MAGANDA model is not simply an introduction to learning but also serves as a space for initial meaning construction that strengthens the identity, psychological comfort, and cognitive readiness of diaspora students in reading BIPA texts.

Abstract

Math anxiety continues to hinder students' performance and emotional well-being in elementary mathematics education. This study aimed to develop and test the effectiveness of Eco-Islamic Memory Palace Media in reducing math anxiety and strengthening academic resilience. Employing the Plomp development model, the study involved three phases: preliminary research to identify psychological needs, prototyping of the media design, and a formative evaluation with expert validation and empirical testing on students (N = 24). The media integrated environmental imagery and Islamic values into visual-spatial mnemonic structures to create meaningful, calm, and emotionally safe learning experiences. Quantitative data analysis showed a significant decrease in students' math anxiety scores and a notable increase in resilience levels. The media was also rated highly feasible based on content validity, attractiveness, and usability. These findings demonstrate the potential of memory-based digital interventions rooted in spiritual and environmental contexts to serve as effective psychological and pedagogical tools. The study contributes to the growing body of research in positive psychology in education, highlighting the value of culturally and spiritually responsive instructional design. Implications include the need for holistic teaching approaches that address cognitive performance alongside emotional support and character development in early mathematics education.
