Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive qualitative case study examines the number-sense and mental-arithmetic profiles of six fifth-grade students across varying mathematical ability levels. Data were collected through written tests, semi-structured interviews, and work documentation, then analyzed using data reduction, display, and verification. Findings revealed that high-ability students demonstrated mastery through flexibility, accuracy, and efficiency. Moderate-ability students met most criteria but showed inconsistencies with complex tasks, while low-ability students faced substantial difficulties and displayed unstable strategies. These results emphasize the necessity of differentiated instruction. To foster foundational numerical competencies, teachers should implement regular mental math activities, such as daily number discussions, to practice flexible estimation. Furthermore, providing scaffolded support—such as gradually reducing the use of scratch paper—is essential for low-ability students to alleviate mental strain and strengthen memory for mental calculations. This structured approach ensures effective development of mathematical proficiency across all student profiles. This approach ensures foundational numerical competencies are developed effectively across all student profiles.

Abstract

The problem in elementary mathematics learning lies in the limited integration of local cultural values, which causes mathematical concepts to be perceived as abstract and less meaningful for students. This study aims to explore and analyze the integration of plane geometry concepts through the transformation of the Surya Majapahit symbol as a culture-based learning medium in elementary education. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach involving elementary school students and teachers as research participants. Data were collected through classroom observations, document analysis, and semi structured interviews, using observation sheets, interview guides, and field notes as research instruments. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify the relationships between cultural artifacts and geometric concepts. The results indicate that the Surya Majapahit symbol functions as an effective visual and cultural anchor in strengthening students’ understanding of geometric concepts, visual spatial reasoning, and learning engagement. The implications of this study suggest that integrating local cultural artifacts can serve as an alternative strategy for contextual and sustainable mathematics instruction, while simultaneously fostering cultural identity and enhancing the quality of meaningful learning in elementary education.

Abstract

Low conceptual understanding of science among Indonesian elementary school students and the prevalence of unhealthy eating habits represent interrelated critical issues. This study was motivated by a research gap in the literature: ethnoscience studies on the digestive system remain limited to conceptual exploration or employ other cultural objects (herbal medicine, water ketupat), and no quantitative empirical evidence exists regarding the application of rujak cingur in its region of origin, Surabaya. This research aimed to examine the effect of rujak cingur-based ethnoscience learning on the conceptual understanding of the digestive system among fifth-grade students at SDN Kaliasin VII/286. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was selected due to the limitation of having only one class population (n=23), rendering a control group unavailable, and the study's orientation as a preliminary investigation to test the intervention's potential. The findings revealed an increase in the average conceptual understanding scores from 44.83 (pretest) to 84.65 (posttest). The N-Gain analysis yielded a value of 0.72 (high category), with the mastery learning percentage rising substantially from 17.4% to 82.6%. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test produced a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference, with all 23 students (100%) demonstrating score improvements (Positive Ranks) and a Cohen's d effect size classified as very large (d > 1.8). These findings confirm that the implementation of rujak cingur-based ethnoscience significantly enhances the conceptual understanding of the digestive system among fifth-grade students. Theoretically, this study strengthens Ausubel's meaningful learning theory by demonstrating that concrete cultural objects can function as advance organizers, while simultaneously enriching the Culturally Responsive Teaching framework through quantitative empirical evidence. Practically, this learning model can be adopted by teachers as a contextual, affordable, and accessible alternative, supporting the preservation of local wisdom and implementing the Merdeka Curriculum through strengthening the Pancasila Student Profile dimensions of global diversity and sustainable lifestyles.

Abstract

This study investigated the improvement of students’ computational thinking abilities through the implementation of digital ethnomathematics instruction supported by the ECOPEDIA platform. A quantitative methodology was adopted, employing a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. The research involved two class groups, namely an experimental cohort and a comparison cohort. The primary data collection tool was a computational thinking assessment, which had undergone validity and reliability testing prior to use. Based on the analysis, the experimental group’s mean score rose from 50.7 at pretest to 84.8 at posttest. The Independent Sample T-Test revealed a statistically meaningful difference between the two groups (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the experimental class achieved an N-Gain of 0.69, falling into the moderate category and surpassing that of the control class. In light of these results, the ECOPEDIA-based digital ethnomathematics approach proved to be more effective than conventional teaching methods in this particular sample (Cohen’s d = 0.82, indicating a large effect size). These outcomes suggest that culturally grounded digital media can serve as a promising instructional alternative for fostering 21st-century competencies, although further studies with broader sampling are recommended to confirm the generalizability of these findings

Abstract

Critical thinking skills among Indonesian elementary students remain limited, largely because contextual teaching materials integrating local wisdom are rarely available. This study developed the Si PURI worksheet through an Ethno-STEAM approach to improve fourth-grade students’ critical thinking skills. Its novelty lies in incorporating pupur, a traditional Javanese powder-based skincare practice, into a structured worksheet integrating science through the chemistry of natural ingredients, technology through processing tools, engineering through production procedures, arts through cultural aesthetics, and mathematics through measurement and proportion. This topic has not previously been explored in elementary Ethno-STEM or Ethno-STEAM worksheets. The study employed the ADDIE development model, consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Participants were 23 fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 017 North Sangatta, East Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan. Data were collected through expert validation, accessibility questionnaires, and critical thinking tests administered before and after implementation. Quantitative analysis included validity and accessibility percentages, N-Gain calculations, and the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Results showed that the worksheet achieved an average validity score of 82.33%, categorized as very valid. Accessibility reached 85.62% based on evaluations from 23 students and five teachers, indicating a very good category. Effectiveness was demonstrated by an average score increase from 59.43 to 77.96, with a class N-Gain of 0.46 in the medium category. The Wilcoxon test indicated a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (p = 0.000), while 43.5% of students reached the high improvement category. Therefore, the Si PURI worksheet is valid, accessible, and effective for fostering critical thinking skills.
