Abstract

Mathematics anxiety is a well-documented affective factor that negatively influences students’ learning processes and academic achievement. While the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) is among the most established instruments for assessing this construct, it was originally developed for adolescents and adults, thereby limiting its applicability for younger learners. Despite increasing recognition of the early onset of mathematics anxiety, few validated instruments exist for measuring this phenomenon in elementary school students, particularly within non-Western contexts. Addressing this gap, the present study introduces a culturally and developmentally appropriate adaptation of the MARS for Indonesian elementary students aged 10–12 years. Employing a quantitative psychometric approach with a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 324 students via an online questionnaire. The MARS-30 was linguistically simplified and contextually adapted to suit the cognitive and emotional characteristics of younger learners. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) revealed a two-factor solution—Mathematics Test Anxiety and Numerical Anxiety—accounting for 57.62% of the total variance. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) further supported this structure, yielding satisfactory model fit indices (CFI = 0.94, TLI = 0.92, RMSEA = 0.06, and SRMR = 0.05). Internal consistency reliability was high for the overall scale (α = 0.87) and its subscales (Mathematics Test Anxiety: α = 0.85; Numerical Anxiety: α = 0.84). These results provide robust empirical evidence for the multidimensional nature of mathematics anxiety in children and validate the adapted MARS as a psychometrically sound instrument for use in Indonesian elementary educational settings. The findings underscore the importance of early detection and culturally responsive assessment of mathematics anxiety, informing future research and intervention strategies aimed at mitigating its long-term educational impact.

Abstract

This systematic literature review examines teachers' pedagogical competence in designing deep learning and Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) assessment in elementary schools. The study analyzed 27 peer-reviewed articles published between 2020 and 2025, focusing on three primary dimensions: pedagogical competence in HOTS-based learning design, assessment development, and impact on student learning outcomes. The findings reveal that elementary school teachers demonstrate moderate to good pedagogical competence in designing HOTS-based learning, with strengths in lesson planning and implementation but challenges in assessment development and consistent application. Key factors influencing successful HOTS implementation include professional learning communities, continuous training programs, technology integration, and institutional readiness. The review identifies significant gaps in teachers' ability to develop creative and evaluative assessment instruments, with most teachers relying on analytical-level questions. Furthermore, the integration of HOTS assessment with deep learning approaches shows positive impacts on students' critical thinking skills and learning outcomes. The study recommends establishing systematic professional development programs, strengthening teacher learning communities, developing comprehensive HOTS assessment instruments, and fostering collaboration between stakeholders. This review contributes to understanding the current state of pedagogical competence in HOTS implementation and provides evidence-based recommendations for improving elementary education quality through enhanced teacher competence in deep learning and assessment practices.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of the Multiple Intelligences (MI) approach for remedial foundational reading, writing, and arithmetic (calistung) instruction in elementary schools Methodology: A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted according to the PRISMA framework. A comprehensive search of literature published between 2020-2025 was performed across multiple academic databases using predefined keywords. A total of 20 relevant studies were identified, critically appraised, and thematically synthesized. Main Findings: The MI approach shows positive potential in improving calistung skills, particularly when integrated with active strategies like Problem-Based Learning and using MI-based worksheets. However, most existing studies have key methodological limitations, including small sample sizes, weak designs, and a lack of longitudinal data. Effectiveness is highly dependent on implementation quality and context. Novelty/Originality of this study: This review provides a novel, focused synthesis of recent empirical evidence on MI for remedial calistung, a specific and critical educational context. It advances knowledge by identifying a consistent research-practice gap and offering concrete, evidence-based recommendations for future research and curriculum integration, moving beyond general theoretical discussion.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the actual conditions of instructional practices, levels of religious moderation literacy, and emotional maturity among students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah in Sumenep Regency. A mixed-methods approach was employed, integrating descriptive–exploratory qualitative methods with quantitative survey data. Data were collected through interviews, observations, questionnaires, and documentation across five Madrasah Ibtidaiyah representing both mainland and island regions. The findings indicate that learning practices in Sumenep have adopted the principles of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) and local wisdom–based approaches; however, these practices remain predominantly focused on cognitive and socio-cultural aspects, with limited emphasis on the affective domain. This condition is reflected in the average scores of religious moderation literacy (2.41) and emotional maturity (2.57) on a four-point scale, suggesting that students’ understanding of tolerance and self-regulation is still largely conceptual and has not yet reached the stage of behavioral internalization. Madurese cultural values such as tengka’ (mutual respect) and bhâghus (politeness) demonstrate strong potential as reflective learning resources to strengthen students’ moderate character and emotional stability. These findings highlight the need for the development of an integrative learning model based on local wisdom that systematically integrates cognitive, affective, and social dimensions through stages of value orientation, exploration, collaborative learning, positive behavioral modeling, and reflective evaluation. Such a model is expected to foster a generation that is knowledgeable, empathetic, and characterized by moderate attitudes in accordance with the socio-cultural context of Sumenep. This study remains exploratory in nature and has not yet reached the effectiveness testing stage; therefore, further comprehensive research with more rigorous quantitative analysis is required.
