Abstract

Multicultural education is increasingly important in the context of globalization that affects cultural and religious diversity in society. This research aims to explore the philosophical basis of multicultural education through the interpretation of the Qur'an and the role of hermeneutic approaches in Islamic religious education. The research method uses a Systematic Literature Review based on the Scopus database from 2022 to 2025 by analyzing Scopus-indexed scientific articles related to multiculturalism, Islamic education, and hermeneutics. From the search results, it was found that 229 articles were filtered into 37 relevant articles, and finally 20 articles that met the inclusion criteria were selected for further analysis. The results of the study show that the interpretation of the Qur'an with a contextual hermeneutic approach provides a strong philosophical basis for multicultural education with the values of inclusivity, justice, and respect for diversity. This research also identifies the important contribution of hermeneutics in enriching the interpretation of Qur'anic values that support a more inclusive and tolerant education. The conclusion in this study is that Islamic religious education based on Qur'anic values can create a harmonious and pluralistic society if applied with a more critical and contextual approach. The main contribution of this article is to fill the research gap on the application of Qur'an interpretation in multicultural education and to introduce a broader hermeneutic approach in the context of Islamic religious education in an increasingly diverse society.

Abstract

The rapid pace of social change and technological advancement in the Society 5.0 era requires educational institutions, including Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), to adapt by developing more human-centered and spiritually grounded learning systems. This study aims to formulate Islamic parenting values derived from the Qur’an through a thematic interpretation approach (tafsir maudhū’i), by examining Tafsir Al-Thabari and Tafsir Al-Azhar. Using a qualitative library research method combined with content analysis, this study explores key principles of Islamic parenting such as monotheism (tauhid), parental responsibility, empathy, gradual education, and the balance between rights and duties in child upbringing. The findings indicate that these values are deeply rooted in divine revelation, with Al-Thabari presenting a normative and textual interpretation, while Buya Hamka, through Tafsir Al-Azhar, offers a more reflective and contextual perspective relevant to contemporary life. These values are considered highly applicable to the pesantren education system, especially in responding to the challenges of digitalization and social transformation in the Society 5.0 era. By integrating these Islamic values into curricula and learning methods, pesantren can strengthen their role in nurturing a generation of students who are faithful, morally upright, and adaptive to modern developments. This research contributes to the development of an Islamic education model that remains contextually relevant while firmly rooted in Qur’anic teachings.

Abstract

The issue of Islamic education has always been an intriguing topic of scholarly inquiry. The use of hermeneutics as the foundational basis of Islamic education is grounded in the Qur’an and prophetic teachings. The objective of this study is to analyze the extent to which the hermeneutic method can serve as a foundation for Islamic education. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. The data sources consist of both primary and secondary materials. Primary data were obtained from key reference books, while secondary data were drawn from relevant journals, books, magazines, and other documents related to this research. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings indicate that Islamic education requires the integration of cognitive, affective, and spiritual dimensions, all of which aim to bring human beings closer to God and to actualize their human potential. Thus, Qur’anic and prophetic hermeneutics offer a dynamic conceptual framework for understanding Islamic education as a process of meaning-making rather than merely a transfer of knowledge.

Abstract

This article discusses the interpretation of Qur'anic verses about food and energy with a focus on carbohydrates from the perspective of Tafsir Ilmi of the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia. The verses analyzed include Q.S. al-An'ām [6]: 95, Q.S. al-Mu'minūn [23]: 19, Q.S. Maryam [19]: 25, and Q.S. an-Naḥl [16]: 68–69, which allude to grains, fruits, dates, and honey as the source of human life. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach and descriptive-analytical analysis of the Scientific Interpretation of the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia, by comparing it in a limited way with classical and modern interpretations. The results of the study show that the Tafsir Ilmi of the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia understands these verses by relating them to the findings of modern nutrition science, especially the function of carbohydrates as the main source of energy for the human body. Grains are understood as a source of complex carbohydrates, while dates, grapes, and honey are categorized as simple sources of carbohydrates that are easily digestible and quickly absorbed. The Scientific Interpretation does not make the Qur'an the basis for the formation of biochemical theories, but rather places science as a tool to affirm the function of food in the order of Allah's creation. Thus, the interpretation of Ilmi acts as a conceptual bridge between revelation and modern nutritional science, as well as showing methodological prudence in the integration of the Qur'an and science

Abstract

This study examines the dimension of socio-political criticism in Tafsir Al-Azhar by Buya Hamka with a focus on the value of justice as the central theme. The Tafsir of Al-Azhar is not only a monumental work in the Islamic scientific treasures in the archipelago, but also a reflection of the thinking of a scholar who is responsive to the socio-political dynamics of his time. Hamka, as a mufasir as well as a social activist, integrates the textual understanding of the Qur'an with the historical context and empirical reality of society, resulting in contextual and applicative interpretations. This study uses a qualitative method with a hermeneutical-critical approach to analyze how Hamka constructs the concept of socio-political justice through his interpretation of the verses of the Qur'an. The findings of the study show that Hamka's socio-political criticism in Tafsir Al-Azhar includes three main dimensions: first, criticism of the arbitrariness of rulers and abuse of power; second, advocacy for the rights of the oppressed and marginalized groups; and third, emphasis on the principles of deliberation and political participation as a mechanism for the realization of justice. Hamka emphasized that justice is a fundamental value in Islam that must be implemented concretely in the political system and social structure. The concept of justice in Tafsir Al-Azhar is not limited to the individual-spiritual dimension, but extends to the collective-structural level that includes economic distribution, legal equality, and political participation. This research makes a theoretical contribution to the study of Indonesian contextual interpretation and a practical contribution to the development of Islamic political ethics based on the Qur'an.

Abstract

Objective:  Assess the limitations of the liberal and theological multicultural education paradigm and formulate an alternative framework that is able to bridge the two in the context of a majority Muslim society such as Indonesia. Theoretical framework: Integrating critical multicultural education with Religious Studies as a non-confessional, phenomenological, and dialogical approach that serves as a bridge between secular relativism and theological absolutism. Literature review: Based on an interdisciplinary literature review in multicultural education, religious education, and educational philosophy that highlights criticism of liberal and theological paradigms. Method: Using a qualitative approach with philosophical and conceptual design through literature studies and expert interviews to strengthen theoretical analysis. Results: The liberal paradigm tends to marginalize religion to the private sphere, while the theological paradigm is exclusive and less dialogical. Alternatively, Religious Multicultural Education is proposed as a middle ground approach that emphasizes epistemic plurality and interreligious dialogue. Implications: Contribute to the development of more inclusive education policies and curricula in a religiously plural society that faces tensions between secular and confessional models. Novelty: It lies in the synthesis between multicultural education and Religious Studies that produces a new model that is contextual, dialogical, and transcends the existing paradigm dichotomy.

Abstract

Justice (al-‘adl) constitutes the moral core of the Qur’an; however, its interpretation within contemporary Islamic legal discourse has often stagnated due to the dichotomy between rigid textualism and unrestrained contextualism. This study aims to reconstruct the concept of justice through the framework of Noetic Legal Methodology, specifically the Spiral-Triadic Model. Employing a trans-epistemological library-based approach, the study integrates Toshihiko Izutsu’s semantic analysis and Mohammed Arkoun’s semiotic critique within a circular analytical movement (the Demystificatory Circular Process). The findings reveal three fundamental insights. First, at the bayani (textual) level, Izutsu’s semantics uncovers that ‘adl is not merely a legal concept but an ontological principle of balance (mizan) that underpins the Qur’anic Weltanschauung. Second, at the burhani (contextual) level, Arkoun’s critique of reason demystifies historical distortions, demonstrating how the meaning of justice has frequently been appropriated by power structures to sustain the status quo. Third, at the ‘irfani (synthetic) level, the integration of these approaches produces the notion of “liberative justice,” understood as a dynamic movement aimed at restoring social equilibrium guided by transcendental values. This study concludes that the proposed noetic synthesis offers a viable resolution to the methodological impasse in Qur’anic interpretation, repositioning justice as an emancipatory instrument relevant to contemporary humanity.

Abstract

This study aims to construct and analyze the theory of limits as an epistemological instrument for interpretive renewal in the thought of Fazlur Rahman and Abdul Aziz. The primary focus of this study is to understand how these two figures place the limits of rationality and the authority of revelation in the process of interpreting the Qur'an. This study uses a qualitative approach with library research and applies a philosophical-hermeneutic approach. Data were obtained from the main works of Fazlur Rahman (Islam and Modernity, Major Themes of the Qur'an) and Abdul Aziz (Limit Theory in Islamic Epistemology, Contemporary Islamic Epistemological Reform), then analyzed using content analysis with a comparative-critical approach. The results show that Fazlur Rahman emphasizes limits as the moral boundaries of the Qur'an that keep interpretation rooted in the values of revelation, while Abdul Aziz formulates limits as an epistemic framework that regulates the extent to which rationality can play a role in interpreting divine texts. The two combine to form a conceptual synthesis that suggests that limit theory serves as an epistemological balancing mechanism between freedom of thought and adherence to revelation. This research contributes to strengthening the epistemological aspect of exegetical methodology and offers a sustainable paradigm of exegesis (afsir) that is rational, contextual, and maintains divine value.

Abstract

This article formulates an integrative model for interpreting Qur’anic verses on gender relations through Amina Wadud’s tawhidic hermeneutics and Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir’s qira’ah mubadalah. The central question is how tawhid, justice, and reciprocity may become an exegetical procedure that preserves textual authority while preventing patriarchal bias in meaning production. This study employs qualitative library research using descriptive-analytical and thematic-critical analysis of Wadud’s and Kodir’s primary works, selected Qur’anic verses, and contemporary scholarship on gender-sensitive exegesis. The analytical procedure consists of linguistic analysis, socio-historical contextualization, intra-textual coherence, formulation of universal principles, mubadalah-based reciprocity, and maqasid/harm analysis. The application to Q. 9:71, Q. 33:35, and Q. 4:34 demonstrates that the tawhidic–mubadalah integration expands the moral subject of the verses, interprets qiwamah as functional and conditional responsibility, understands nusyuz as a two-way relational problem, and affirms non-violent conflict resolution within family ethics.

Abstract

This study analyzes the concept of thematic unity (al-wahdah al-mawdhu‘iyyah or nazm) in Qur’anic exegesis as developed by two important figures in modern exegesis, Hamiduddin Al-Farahi (1863–1930) and Sa‘id Hawwa (1935–1989) (Khanan et al., 2025). Both represent two distinct but complementary methodological styles: Al-Farahi with a structural-linguistic approach that emphasizes the internal coherence of the text through the concepts of ‘umud (the central theme of the surah) and nazm (verse coherence), while Sa‘id Hawwa developed a thematic-conceptual exegesis (tafsir mawdhu‘i) that highlights the inter-verse relationships (munasabah) and the moral and social relevance of revelation. Using qualitative-comparative methods and a hermeneutical approach to interpretation, this study explores the epistemological similarities and methodological differences between the two, and assesses their implications for modern exegesis studies. The results demonstrate that the thematic unity theory offers a new paradigm for understanding the Quran integratively rejecting atomistic readings and emphasizing that each chapter possesses an interconnected architecture of meaning. The synergy between the nazm (Farahi) and the thematic-applicative (Hawwa) approaches enriches exegesis studies with a balance between scientific rigor and contextual relevance (Basir et al., 2022). These findings are expected to contribute to the development of a modern exegesis methodology that is not only academic and linguistic, but also reflective of the social realities of contemporary Muslims.
