Abstract

Malaria is endemic to Papua due to various factors, rendering its eradication a continual challenge. Nurses, as healthcare practitioners engaged in malaria management, frequently encounter clinical and sociocultural challenges. Consequently, transcultural nursing has emerged as an effective approach to improve pediatric malaria treatment. This study seeks to assess the efficacy of the transcultural nursing model in enhancing malaria care for children provided by their families. This quasi-experimental design used two groups: a control group and an intervention group, each comprising 50 participants. Data analysis utilized t-tests and a general linear model to evaluate the efficacy of the transcultural nursing model among groups subjected to three interventions over time The findings indicated notable disparities in child malaria care practices between the control and intervention groups, as demonstrated by both the t-test and general linear model analyses. This research concludes the transcultural nursing model can effectively address cultural barriers in the provision of nursing care for malaria.

Abstract

Background: Alginate is an impression material that is widely used in dentistry. Alginate can actually also be obtained from natural materials such as red seaweed. The impression procedure causes the impression material to come into contact with oral tissues including the gingiva. Ideally, the materials used must also meet requirements such as low toxicity or non-toxicity so that tissue damage does not occur. This study aims to analyze the cytotoxicity of alginate impression materials from red seaweed extract in gingival fibroblast cell. Method: This experimental laboratory design using post-test only control group design. The research groups consisted of: sodium alginate extract group, red seaweed extract-based alginate impression material, positive control and negative control. Cytotoxicity was tested on gingival fibroblast cell cultures and the effect was analyzed using the MTT assay. Exposure to gingival fibroblast cell cultures was differentiated in three time durations: 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes. Each time duration was repeated three times. MTT-formazan production is a method used to measure cell viability (living cells). The data obtained were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA test and Tukey HSD post hoc test. Result: There was no significant difference in the average cell viability between the red seaweed extract-based alginate impression material group and the negative control group at an exposure duration of 5 minutes, which was more than 90%. Conclusion: The red seaweed extract-based alginate impression material has no toxic effect on gingival fibroblast cells at 5 minutes exposure.

Abstract

Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is still a global health problem. Indonesia is the 3rd country with an average of 5% cases per 100,000 population. For the Papua region, MDR-TB is still a major problem because the treatment success rate has not reached the WHO indicator (68.7%). The treatment of MDR-TB is complex and time-consuming, making patients non-compliant. Reports of low patient visits have made it possible to develop a promotive service program based on applying the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of Behavioral Change. The TTM Model focuses on changing behavior with the main component of self-efficacy. The study aimed to determine the characteristics of patients, treatment compliance of MDR-TB patients, analyze the effect of applying the TTM behavioral change model with the level of treatment compliance of MDR-TB patients. The research method used a pre-experiment design with a one-group pre-test-post-test design. The study population was 35 patients at the city and district health centers of Jayapura. The instruments used were the Self-Efficacy For Appropriate Medication Use Scale (SEAMS) and TB Medication Adherence Scale (TBMAS). The effect test used a paired sample t-test with significance level p-value=0.05. This indicates an effect of changes in compliance behavior after being given health promotion by applying the Transtheoretical Model. Substantially, the level of adherence to taking medication in MDR-TB patients is also influenced by belief and motivation to recover. There is support from nurses at the puskesmas who often provide behavior change promotions, so patients have the strength and support of a good system that has a positive impact on increasing thoughts to achieve recovery. The importance of Increasing health promotion based on behavior change in MDR-TB patients can increase self-efficacy to recover so that it has an impact on adherence to taking medication.

Abstract

Introduction: Families of critically ill patients often experience psychological stress due to the uncertainty and emotional burden of intensive care environments. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationship between stress levels and coping mechanisms among family members of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Methods: A quantitative analytic design with a cross-sectional approach was used, involving 30 respondents selected through quota sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires to measure stress levels and coping strategies, and analyzed using Spearman’s rho correlation. Results: The results showed that 60.0% of respondents experienced high levels of stress (Level IV), and 70.0% employed maladaptive coping mechanisms. A moderate positive correlation was found between stress and coping (r = 0.365, p = 0.024), indicating that higher stress levels were associated with an increased use of maladaptive strategies. Conclusions: The study concludes that family members of ICU patients are prone to psychological distress and often lack effective coping mechanisms, highlighting the need for family-centered interventions to support emotional resilience and adaptive coping.
