Abstract

One of the most important pest that attacks sengon stands is boktor (Xystrocera festiva). Boktor attacks tree stem and causing high damage in term of biological, physiological and economical side. The aim of this study was to analyze damage percentage and damage level on sengon stand in terms of age, diameter and height. The result shows that boktor is starting to attack when the sengon stands are 3 years old with damage percentage and damage level were 20.26 % and 13.32%, respectively. It increased along with the increasing of age, diameter, and height. The highest percentage of damage and level of damage found in 5 years old of sengon stand i.e. 53.71% and 38.07%, respectively. The enhancement of percentage and level of damage caused by the abundant source of food, insect behavior and pest management. Boktor mostly attacks sengon stands in the range of 15.5-18.5 cm in diameter (frequency = 30 trees/ha) and 18.5-21.5 m (frequency = 40 trees/ha) in total height.Key words: boktor, damage percentage, damage level, sengon, tree age

Abstract

Iron (Fe) is a micro essential needed by plants in small amounts and can be toxic when available in large quantities. This study aimed to evaluate how Fe exposure affects the growth of C. callothyrsus and L. leucocephala seedlings. This study used a completely randomized design with factorial, where the first factor consisted of two levels of seedlings (C. calothyrsus and L. leucocephala), and the second factor consisted of Fe concentration which consisted of 8 levels (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5, and 1.75 mM). The results showed that treatment of seedlings species and concentration of Fe was able to significantly affect the growth parameters (height, root length, root dry weight, shoots, and plant dry weight) of seedlings. The control treatment (without Fe) showed the highest growth response compared to those treated with Fe exposure and an increase in Fe concentration was able to reduce all growth parameters in both seedlings. The 0.5 mM Fe concentration reduced all growth parameters of C. calothyrsus drastically, while in L. leucocephala, the Fe 0.75 concentration was able to decrease all growth parameters drastically. The tolerance index of both seedlings decreased with increasing Fe concentration. The rate of photosynthesis did not show a significant difference between treatments, meanwhile, it had a significant effect on chlorophyll affect chlorophyll (a, b, and total chlorophyll) and carotenoid content. The highest Fe content in C. calothyrsus seedlings was at a concentration of 1.5 mM (4.40%), while in L. leucocephala seedlings, the highest Fe content was at 1.7 mM (2.87%).

Abstract

Abstrak. Modulus geser perlu dijadikan pertimbangan pada produkkayu, khususnya untuk desain yang memiliki rasio tinggi/panjang bentangnya besar.Penelitian ini mendesain 6 tipe panel laminasi kayu Samama (Antocephallus macrophyllus), menganalisis modulus geser dan pengaruhnya terhadap nilai kekakuan (MOEstatis) masing-masing panel laminasi. Hasilnya kemudian dibandingan dengan kekakuan hasil pengujian non destruktif (MOEd). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa modulus geser panel laminasi kayu Samama memberikan pengaruh sebesar 2 - 8% terhadap kekakuan kayu Samama, tergantung pada tipe laminasi dan panjang bentangnya. Sementara itu nilai pengujian non-destruktif memiliki nilai yang lebih besar 11 - 20% dibandingan dengan kekakuan panel laminasi kayu Samamayang telah terkoreksi oleh modulus geser. Abstract. Shear modulus need to be considered in designing wood product that has high ratio of height/length. This study designed 6 types of panel lamina made of Samama wood (Antocephallus macrophyllus). The shear modulus was measured and its effect on the stiffness (MOE static) was analyzed in comparison to those of non-destructive test (MOEd). The results showed that shear modulus affected the stiffness of the laminas by 2-8%;the value was determined by the type of lamination and the length of span. Meanwhile, non-destructive test showedthat the laminas had 11-20% of higher stiffness than those of laminas with shear modulus corrected-stiffness.

Abstract

AbstrakSudut kontak dan keterbasahan dinamis penting diketahui untuk menganalisis keteguhan rekat. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui sudut kontak dan keterbasahan dinamis kayu samama pada berbagai pengerjaan kayu. Metode yang digunakan adalah meneteskan air destilata, perekat UF dan isosianat dengan ukuran tertentu pada permukaan kayu hasil gergaji dan hasil mesin kupas. Permukaan kayu gergajian yang ditetesi oleh cairan adalah permukaan radial, tangensial dan permukaan yang membentuk sudut 45° antara radial dan tangensial. Sementara itu permukaan finir hasil pengupasan adalah permukaan tight dan loose. Kayu gergajian maupun finir yang dianalisis pada penelitian ini, keduanya diambil dari bagian juvenil dan dewasa. Keterbasahan dinamis dianalisis menggunakan model SD. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa porositas permukaan bahan berpengaruh terhadap keterbasahan kayu samama oleh cairan. Permukaan tangensial memiliki sifat yang lebih mudah mengalami keterbasahan dibandingkan dengan permukaan radial maupun TR (permukaan antara radial dan tangensial) sementara bagian juvenil memiliki tingkat keterbasahan lebih baik dibandingkan dewasanya. Finir samama memiliki tingkat keterbasahan setara dengan permukaan TR kayu samama dimana bagian juvenil finir memiliki laju keterbasahan yang lebih baik dibandingkan dengan finir dewasa. Disamping itu, bagian loose finir lebih cepat terbasahi oleh cairan dibandingkan bagian tight.AbstractContact angle and dynamic wettability is important in determining bonding strength, therefore, this study addressed contact angle and dynamic wettability of samama wood in various woodworking. Method used in the study was by dripping distill water, UF and isocyanate adhesives in particular size on the surface of wood processed by circular saw and peeling machine. The surfaces of sawn wood which dripped by those liquids were radial, tangential, and surface which made a 45° angle between radial and tangential. Meanwhile the tested surfaces of peeled-veneer were tight and loose surfaces. Both sawn wood and veneer in this study were taken from juvenile and mature part of the samama wood. Dynamic wettability was analyzed using SD model. The results showed that porosity of the surface significantly affected the wettability of samama wood by liquid. The profile of tangential surface made it had a better wettability than radial and TR (i.e. surface between radial and tangential) surfaces. Meanwhile, juvenile part showed better wettability than the mature one. The samama veneer had equal wettability with TR surface of sawn wood in which the juvenile one showed better wettability than the mature veneer. Further, it was noticed that loose surface of the veneer was wetted faster than the tight one.

Abstract

 Impact of mining activity on environment is very significant, especially in the form of pollution on surface water and ground water. Therefore, it is necessary to rehabilitate the damaged ecosystem in post mining land by introduction of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as source of local potential inoculants. The objective of this research was identifying AMF species on the basis of size, color, and ornament of the spore. Research method comprised identification of species and number of AMF spore in shale post mining location (Site-1) and limestone post mining location (Site-2) with 4 replications for each site. Research result showed the finding of four genera of AMF, namely genera Glomus sp, Scutelospora sp, Gigaspora sp and Acaulosopra sp. Identification result in the first location showed findings of AMF Glomus-1 as many as 186 spores, Glomus-2 as many as 71 spores, Scutelospora as many as 43 spores, Acaulospora as many as 18 spores and Gigaspora as many as 8 spores. On the second site there were identified AMF spores of Glomus-1 as many as 112 spores, Glomus-2 as many as 45 spores, Scutelospora as many as 12 spores and Gigaspora as many as 9 spores. This research is useful for accelerating the success of revegetation in post mining land.

Abstract

Getah jelutung adalah getah hasil eksudat/sadapan dari jenis Dyera. Kegunaan getah jelutung sebagai bahan baku permen karet, campuran pembuatan ban mobil, bahan baku pembuatan cat, perekat dan vernis. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui metode dan arah sadap untuk menghasilkan getah jelutung optimal di hutan tanaman industri (HTI). Metode sadap yang digunakan adalah sayatan spiral dari kiri atas ke kanan bawah (1/2 S Kr Kn), sayatan berbentuk V dan sayatan spiral dari kanan atas ke kiri bawah (1/2 S Kn Kr). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa HTI jelutung diperusahaan swasta adalah jenis jelutung rawa (Dyera polyphylla Miq. Steenis atau Dyera lowii Hook. f.) Metode sadap yang menghasilkan getah optimum dan mudah diterapkan adalah metode sayatan spiral dari kiri atas ke kanan bawah (1/2 S Kr-KN) yaitu 187,50 gram/pohon/sadap. Getah jelutung mengandung kadar air 46,20%, kadar abu 0,04%, kadar kotoran 0,24%, kadar nitrogen 0,07% dan kadar resin (ekstrak aseton) 52,71%.

Abstract

Gutta percha resin is a biodegradable and renewable elastomer trans-1,4- isoprene rubber and obtained from Palaquium tree through extraction of leaf or tapping of stem. The purposes of this research were to characterize the gutta percha and its application for wood (plywood) adhesive. Characteristics of gutta percha evaluated in this experiment were moisture content (MC), density, ash content, melting and decomposition temperatures. Plywood performance were evaluated under SNI 01-50019.10-2001 standard. Four different glue spread i.e.,175, 200, 225 and 250 g m-2 were introduced in this experiment. Five percent of maleic anhydride (MAH) and 1% of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) were used as a modifier and an initiator, respectively. The result showed that gutta percha has white to creamy color. The density, MC and ash content of gutta percha were 1.01 g cm-3, 6.09%, and 0.074% respectively. The melting and decomposition temperatures of gutta percha were noted 72.6°C and 482.2°C, respectively. Modification of gutta percha with 5% MAH enhanced the shear strength of resulted plywood. Modified gutta percha with 5% MAH in absence of BPO with glue spread of 250 g.cm-2 can be used for interior and exterior plywood adhesive. Their shear strength value fulfilled the requirement of SNI 01-5008.2-1999 standard.Key words : benzoil peroxide, glue spread gutta percha, maleic anhydride, plywood, wood adhesive

Abstract

The objective of this research was to characterize resin duct anatomical structure of high resin yielder pine (Pinus merkusii) that influences resin production. Samples were collected from high resin yielder pine with different resin production class from seedling seed orchard Cijambu, Sumedang and normal trees from Bogor. Samples than evaluated through microscopic and macroscopic observation to get information about some parameter related to resin duct. The result on anatomical structure characterization showed that high resin yielder trees compared to that of normal one are as followed: darker in wood colour (reddish brown compared to creamy white), higher in number of axial resin duct (9.401.68 mm-2 to 101.30 mm-2 compared to 40.96 mm-2), wider in resin duct diameter (468.8998.72 μm to 562.11181.62 μm compared to 109.4211.26 μm), thicker in epithelium cell (50.81 12.20 μm to 58.599.55 μm compared to 23.1787 μm). These differences may affect to quantity of resin yielder compared to normal producer.Key words: anatomical structure, epithelium, high resin yielder, Pinus merkusii, resin duct

Abstract

Many researchs have been done focusing on the wood quality of teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) especially at the various age level and different locations. This research analyzed different planting distance : (3 x 3) m2 and (2 x 6) m2 from 2 clones; Cepu and Madiun cloned. Oven-dried density, fiber dimension, microfibril angle and modulus of elasticity were determined to asses the wood quality. The results showed that the wood quality of teak from spacing (3 x 3) m2 were better than (2 x 6) m2, although diameter and growth rate were higher in spacing (2 x 6) m2. However, there were not diffrences of wood quality for both clones.Key words : Cepu clone, Madiun clone, planting distance, Tectona grandis, wood quality.

Abstract

Fiber saturation point (FSP) of several Indonesian commercial wood species was studied comprehensively. Five wood species namely sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria), gmelina (Gmelina arborea), nangka (Arthocarpus heterophyllus), manii (Maesopsis eminii), and mangium (Acacia mangium) from plantation areas closed to Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) campus were used as the sample. From each species, one normal tree was selected then cut, and one hundred and twenty small healthy blocks of (1 x 1 x 0.5) cm3were extracted randomly and utilized for specific gravity (SG) and wood shrinkage -green to air dry and to oven dry conditions- measurement. FSP was then measured as a ratio of total volumetric shrinkage and the SG. It was showed that FSP was affected by species namely extractive content. In all species studied, average value of FSP was below 30%. FSP of sengon, gmelina, nangka, manii, and mangium in average was 26.41%, 16.92%, 14.49%, 22.31%, and 23.94%, respectively.
