Abstract

Surian wood (Toona sinensis Roem) is one species of wood that is easily found in Indonesia, especially in West Java. The purpose of this study was to descriptively and quantitatively observe the anatomical structure of surian wood. The wood was collected from Sumedang regency, West Java. The results showed that this wood had oval to round shaped vessels and some of them contain a reddish brown liquid that causes a characteristic odor due to axial intersellular canals. The vessels were mostly solitary and arranged to follow the pattern of the porous ring. There were septate fibers indicated. Axial parenchyma cells were included in the category of paratracheal vasisentrik and marginal bands in the early wood. The ray composition consists of upright and procumbent cells. In the ray cell, there are prismatic crystals in rhomboidal or octahedral shape. Based on the dimensions of fibers, this wood has first-class fiber quality for pulp and paper.Key words: anatomical structure, fiber dimension, fiber quality, Toona sinensis

Abstract

Teak wood  is well known as one of the important wood species from Indonesia. The properties of this wood are quite good and delighted by many people. However, the wood processing may cause discoloration on some pieces or boards of this wood. This degrades the wood performance. The wood surface is slightly darkened. Dark-brown streaks often arise distinctly on the brown color of wood surface. Moreover, when the kiln-dried wood is re-exposed in the further process with a planner or a molder, the discoloration may still exist. The aim of this study was to find out an appropriate technique to alleviate discoloration on  teak wood. The result showed that drying temperature was the most important factor in the discoloration of teak wood. Among chemical treatments in this experiment, the use of 3% Na2SO3 solution was the most effective way to alleviate discoloration on teak wood

Abstract

This study designed 7 types of plywood that were arranged by juvenile and mature part of samama (Anthocephalus macrophyllus) wood, The adhesive used was urea formaldehyde with addition of hardener (NH4Cl) in ratio of 100:1 (weight/weight). The adhesive was applied on both surfaces of core veneer, which were loose and tight surfaces, with glue spread was 150 g m-2. The veneers were arranged in accordance with the research design and the resulted structures were then hot pressed at 110 C for 30 seconds per mm of the plywood’s thickness. The pressure was 10 kg cm-2. The results showed that bonding strength of plywood made from juvenile samama veneer was lower than that of the mature one, although the value was still met SNI standard for type I interior plywood. Furthermore, plywood’s moisture content was also met the requirement of the standard. Plywood density was increased by 11-12% from that of the wood. These findings suggest the suitability of both juvenile and mature wood of samama for the material of good quality plywood. Further studies on determination of other veneer-based products, such as laminated veneer lumber (LVL), were then recommended. Keywords: juvenile, mature, plywood, samama, urea formaldehyde

Abstract

Anatomical structure and some important properties of 3 years old tissues cultural Teakwood (Tectona grandis L.f.) were studied and compared to those of 3 and 8 years old conventional ones. Wood samples were obtained from standing trees of plantation forest area around Semarang city (Central Java). Anatomical structure was observed using wood section 20 µ thick, while fiber dimension was measured on individual macerated fibers. Physical and mechanical properties of wood were evaluated in accordance with BS 132:57 for small clear specimen using universal testing machine. All wood samples studied were still juvenile since wood density and fibers length tend to increase from pith towards the bark. Both 3 years-old woods, namely tissue cultural and the conventional Teakwoods have not heartwood at the center or the end of the stem except on their basal i.e. 29.81% in the former and 25% in the latter, respectively. The 8 years old conventional Teakwood consisted of 58.23% heartwood at the basal, and 46.30% at the center, respectively. Latewood portion of tissue cultural teakwood was the lowest. Difference between earlywood and latewood in this Teak was unclear and not distinguished well. Wood texture among the samples was moderate. The finest was found on tissue cultural Teakwood while the roughest on the conventional 3 years old. Based on their average in wood density, specific gravity, modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture, it can be said that quality of tissue cultural Teakwood was similar to that of 3 years-old conventional one, but much lower than that of 8 years-old conventional Teakwood although their stem diameters were similar physically. This coincides well with their anatomical characteristics.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study the density distribution and stress-strain curve (SSC) of oil palm trunk (OPT). The 40 year-old of OPT was used for these experiments. The specimen was taken from 1 m, 3 m and 5 m height of OPT with dimension of (2 x 2 x 2) cm3 for density distribution measurements. The interval of it was 2 cm from the outer near the bark to the inner near the center. The specimen for SSC measurements was taken only from 1 m height with the same dimension, interval, and position, as well. These specimens were treated into three conditions, i.e. air dry, wet and water saturated. The results showed that density of OPT was 0.23-0.74 g cm-3. The stress-strain curves showed that water saturated and wet conditions were easier to compress than that of air dried condition. The compression level increased from the outer to the center of the trunk. The center part can be compressed into 67% in air dry condition and 72-73% in wet and water saturated conditions from their initial thickness. Relationships between compression level, showing by strain, and density expressed as polynomial equations, regardless of the three conditions.Key words: compression, density distribution, OPT, SSC, vascular bundles

Abstract

This paper studies trading volume of 206 recorded and publicly traded bonds in Indonesian Capital Market on January 4th - March 9th 2009 observed period. The data covers almost all trading data in the market and all brokers that exist. The microstructure data used in this study is a complete understanding for almost every phenomenons in the market, and thus could explain more about bond liquidity. We ind that some bonds are actively traded and most are rare. We also construct some determinant facto tests of bond trading volume, included descriptive statistic, GLS, and other formal test. We ind that bonds with larger par value and more seasoned tend to have smaller trading volume. We also ind that private bonds are actively traded more than public bonds (both government institution and private institution bond). Interest rate risk and bond price volatility are positively inluence bond trading volume, but opposite for bond rating. We ind that bond with higher probability to default have smaller trading volume. While comparing the bond volume data with stock price data, we ind that the relationship in two markets is not linier as the convenient theory in inance said.

Abstract

Asia's financial crisis in July 1997 affects currency, capital market, and real market throughout Asian countries. Countries in southeast region (ASEAN), including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, are some of the countries where the crisis hit the most. In these countries, where financial sectors are far more developed than real sectors and the money market sectors, most of the economic activities are conducted in capital market. Movement in the capital market could be a proxy to describe the overall economic situation and therefore the prediction of it could be an early warning system of economic crises. This paper tries to investigate movement in ASEAN (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand) capital market to build an early warning system from financial sectors perspective. This paper will be very beneficial for the government to anticipate the forthcoming crisis. The insight of this paper is from Hamilton (1990) model of regime switching process in which he divide the movement of currency into two regimes, describe the switching transition based on Markov process and creates different model for each regimes. Differ from Hamilton, our research focuses on index return instead of currency to model the regime switching. This research aimed to ind the probability of crisis in the future by combining the probability of switching and the probability distribution function of each regime. Probability of switching is estimated by categorizing the movement in index return into two regimes (negative return in regime 1 and positive return in regime 2) then measuring the proportion of switching to regime 1 in t given regime 1 in t-1 (P11) and to regime 2 in t given regime 2 in t-1 (P22). The probability distribution function of each regime is modeled using t-student distribution. This paper is able to give signal of the 1997/8 crisis few periods prior the crisis.
