Abstract

This study aimed to identify the key factors influencing COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among the elderly at Manatuto Villa Health Center, Kota Manatuto, Timor-Leste, with a focus on knowledge, social influence, personal experiences, emotional factors, and access to health information. A cross-sectional design was used, involving 278 respondents aged 60 years and above who completed the structured questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted using univariate, bivariate, and logistic regression to identify the main determinants of vaccine acceptance. The results revealed that 72% of respondents lacked sufficient knowledge about the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination, which was attributed to low education levels and limited access to information (p < 0.05). Additionally, 12% of the respondents reported negative experiences related to vaccine side effects, such as dizziness and nausea, which increased their hesitancy to receive subsequent doses. Social and family influences were also significant, with 71% of respondents following the advice of religious and community leaders in making vaccination decisions. Emotional factors, such as anxiety and fear of declining health due to old age, affected 67% of the respondents, becoming a barrier to vaccine acceptance. This study concludes that improving knowledge through community-based outreach programs, addressing anxiety, and involving trusted local leaders are essential strategies for enhancing vaccine acceptance among the elderly. The practical implications of these findings highlight the need for policies that focus on community education and outreach approaches to increase vaccination coverage in areas with limited access to healthcare.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of the community in managing household waste in the Urban Village of Lahane Oriental, Dili. This study was motivated by the growing global and local challenges of waste management, particularly in urban areas where population growth exacerbates this issue. This research employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach, using questionnaires distributed to 96 respondents selected through simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation to assess the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. The results showed that the majority of respondents (61.5%) had sufficient knowledge of waste management, while 62.5% demonstrated a positive attitude toward proper waste management. However, the community's waste management behavior did not fully meet the expected standards, despite generally positive attitudes and moderate knowledge. These findings indicate that, although knowledge and attitudes play an important role in influencing behavior, the lack of adequate infrastructure and institutional support remains a major obstacle to optimal waste management practices. It was concluded that further educational campaigns and improvements in waste management facilities are crucial for enhancing community engagement in sustainable waste management. The findings provide practical implications for local governments and policymakers in designing effective waste management interventions that consider both behavioral and structural factors.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This disease is one of the main causes of global morbidity and mortality, with Indonesia being the country with the second highest TB burden in the world. This study aims to evaluate the role of health education in increasing school students' knowledge about TB prevention. The research method used a cross-sectional design with data collection by accidental sampling on 52 high school students who participated in UKS and UKGS activities at the UPT Puskesmas Noebana, November 2024. Knowledge level data was collected through questionnaires before and after the education session. The research results showed a significant increase in students' knowledge, where the "good" category increased from 13.5% to 80.77%, while the "poor" category decreased from 57.7% to 0%. Statistical analysis produces a p value = 0.007, which indicates that there is a significant influence of education on respondents' knowledge. These findings emphasize the importance of health education programs in preventing TB, especially in the school environment.

Abstract

Background: In 2022, East Nusa Tenggara recorded the highest number of HIV-AIDS cases in the province, with a total of 151 patients. HIV-AIDS infections are spread across six districts: Oebobo (27.8%), Maulafa (18.5%), Kelapa Lima (22.5%), Alak (16.5%), Kota Lama (4.6%), and Kota Raja (10%). HIV cases in Indonesia have fluctuated from 2019 to 2022 due to a significant percentage of high-risk behaviors exhibited by high-risk groups, including ship crew members. This study aims to analyze the factors related to HIV/AIDS risk behaviors in ship crew members. Subjects and Method: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at Tenau Port, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia from November to December 2024. The study population consists of all crew members (ABK) on domestic cargo ships arriving and docking at Tenau Kupang Port in 2024, estimated to be 225 ABK. A simple random sampling technique was used, with 96 samples selected based on the Lemeshow formula. Data were collected using a questionnaire. Results: The chi-square test results revealed a significant relationship between knowledge (p = 0.029; OR = 2.734; 95% CI: 1.188–6.296), ship docking duration (p = 0.014; OR = 3.215; 95% CI: 1.342–7.702), and peer support (p = 0.000; OR = 27.586; 95% CI: 3.476–218.930) with HIV/AIDS risk behavior. Attitude (p = 0.272; OR = 0.455; 95% CI: 0.145–1.427), education (p = 1.000; OR = 1.136; 95% CI: 0.089–18.711), income (p = 0.587; OR = 0.587; 95% CI: 0.516–5.093), frequency of going home (p = 0.657; OR = 0.753; 95% CI: 0.324–1.752), and marital status (p = 1.000; OR = 0.948; 95% CI: 0.424–2.127) showed no significant relationship. It is necessary to increase socialization to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention among ABK members and foster positive social support within the crew. Conclusion: There is a need to increase knowledge about the risks of HIV/AIDS through outreach and counseling.

Abstract

Orofacial cleft (OFC) is one of the most common congenital malformations in the world and Indonesia. The causes of OFC are complex, including both intrinsic (genetic) and extrinsic (environmental and behavioral) risk factors. Some studies found that there was an association between folic acid supplementation and the risk of OFC. However, studies on the effect of folic acid supplementation for OFC in Indonesia are lacking. This study aims to analyze the association of folic acid supplementation during early pregnancy with an orofacial cleft in children in Kupang City. The study was a retrospective case-control study was carried out, with a multistage sampling method including 57 participants. We examined the risk of OFC with folic acid supplementation during early pregnancy. Chi-square analysis was used in the study. The results showed that there was a significant association between folic acid use during early pregnancy and the incidence of OFC with a p-value = 0.000 (OR=20,0). Folic acid supplementation during early pregnancy can reduce the risk of OFC in children.
