Abstract

Studies of Islamic work culture generally assume that religious values are best transmitted by leaders sharing the majority's faith. This ethnographic study questions this assumption by examining PT X, a sharia-oriented startup where a Christian Chief Operating Officer (COO) models and enforces Manhaj Salaf principles. Using NVivo-assisted analysis integrating Hymes, Philipsen, and Schein, we investigate how this minority leader communicates and internalizes a majority-religion code. Findings reveal that to navigate a tense environment marked by collective employee silence and harsh CEO directives, the COO employs a protective communication strategy. He acts as a structural "brake pedal," softening top-down messages and migrating reprimands to private channels to preserve employees' communal social faces. Crucially, the COO internalizes the Islamic code through deliberate functional reasoning such as reframing prayer as focus renewal rather than dogmatic compliance. This functionally driven internalization expands Philipsen’s fourth proposition: identity difference forecloses automatic meaning-making, compelling deeper, deliberative engagement with a speech code. Ultimately, cross-faith value internalization depends on functional alignment and consistent leadership behavior, rather than solely on shared religious identity.

Abstract

Using a website has become a primary method for delivering information, doing promotion, and marketing activities. E-commerce business people acknowledged the importance of developing a reliable website to reach the market through the internet, as part of e-service, especially in a country with a large market share like Indonesia. Unfortunately, not every e-commerce web designer is aware of the website accessibility criteria, the lack of awareness creates barriers for persons with disabilities to access e-commerce websites, as buyers and sellers. The accessibility gap of those website limits the ability of persons with disabilities to optimize the presence of e-commerce as an economic opportunity. We need to overcome the barriers to create an inclusive society in Indonesia. This paper aims to provide an overview of the accessibility of e-commerce websites in Indonesia, to find the common web accessibility issues, classified them comparatively into several tiers, type of issues, and then calculates the correlation of total issues with the number of visitors. This study analyzes 39 e-commerce websites. We evaluate based on Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, using an automated tool called "aXe". The study shows evidence of various accessibility issues of e-commerce websites in Indonesia, emphasizing the necessity of web designers to pay more attention to accessibility for users with disabilities. This study also provides several recommendations to website accessibility as part of e-service quality.

Abstract

The emergence of citizen journalism in a news story has its own dilemma. On the one hand, citizen journalism presents a news story on an event quickly, naturally, and without intervention from any party. But on the other hand, citizen journalism also has the potential to deliver fake news (hoaxes) and news that does not pay attention to journalistic rules and codes of ethics. This dilemma actually poses its own challenges for the mass media to accommodate citizen journalism reporting into a rigid and hierarchical media bureaucracy. This study aims to obtain an overview of bureaucracy in the mass media in a news story and find out the consequences of mass media collaboration with citizen journalism. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method using the classical organizational communication theory by Max Weber, namely bureaucracy. Informants consist of editors-in-chief, editors, journalists, and public relations selected from several mass media representing print media (Pikiran Rakyat), electronic media (MNC Media and RRI), and online media (Kumparan and Mojok). The results of this study show that bureaucracy is absolutely needed in all forms of reporting, both through conventional mass media and citizen journalism. Pikiran Rakyat, MNC Media, and RRI make information from citizen journalism as initial information which is then processed through bureaucratic procedures such as verification, confirmation, and follow-up to be used as news material. Meanwhile, Kumparan and Mojok provide space for citizen journalism through several channels while still following the prevailing media bureaucracy. This is done in maintaining the validity of news by paying attention to journalistic rules and codes of ethics.

Abstract

The aging population phenomenon in Indonesia has led to an increasing need for long-term care services for the elderly, particularly within formal institutions such as social nursing homes. In this context, empathy is often understood as an affective response manifested as protection and total assistance from caregivers to the elderly. However, such an understanding has the potential to foster paternalistic relationships that may actually undermine the functional autonomy of the elderly. This article aims to explore and recontextualize the empathic communication practices of caregivers in social nursing homes through an empowerment lens. This research utilizes a qualitative approach, employing in-depth interviews and observations of caregivers and administrators at a social nursing home. The findings indicate that caregivers consistently encourage the elderly to remain independent in their daily activities, a practice interpreted as an attitude of tega. This represents a form of active empathy oriented toward empowerment rather than indulgence. Such communication practices are shown to contribute to the maintenance of physiological self-reliance as well as the psychological well-being of the elderly. This article offers a recontextualization of empathy, shifting from emotional resonance to wisdom in action, while proposing empowerment communication as a contextually grounded empathic framework in the context of geriatric care.
