Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the trend data of research related to learning media. The research method used is the Systematic Literature Network Analysis (SLNA) method. The data for this study consists of research articles on learning media without any time limitations. Articles were collected from the Scopus database, which includes IEEE, Springer, and the search application Publish or Perish (PoP). In the search engine, articles on learning media were first found in 2002, and a total of 1708 articles were retrieved. After filtering by title, 120 articles were obtained, and based on the keywords from these articles, 80 eligible articles were identified for analysis. The analysis results show that the number of studies and research citations fluctuate. Topics frequently discussed in the context of learning media include skills, approaches, and the latest on interactive multimedia. For further research directions, it can be associated with the use of interactive multimedia in explaining science learning that uses a phenomenon-based learning model. This is because science learning can explain phenomena that occur in everyday life

Abstract

The primary aim of this research was to conduct a systematic review on the assessment of computational thinking skills. The employed research method involved a thorough exploration of diverse databases through Google Scholar, employing the keyword "computational thinking" to retrieve pertinent articles. A total of 96 articles were chosen as research samples and subjected to analysis using content analysis techniques to scrutinize education level and evaluation tools variables. The research revealed that the education level variable was classified into four tiers: elementary school (26.17%), junior high school (29.91%), senior high school (19.63%), and college (24.30%). Simultaneously, the evaluation tool variable was categorized into four segments, comprising traditional tools (22.73%), portfolios (33.33%), interviews (15.91%), and surveys (28.03%). Computational thinking (CT) is predominantly assessed among children due to their developmental stage, fostering receptiveness to novel concepts. This facilitates the teaching of fundamental CT principles, such as programming basics, logic, and algorithms. Regarding evaluation tools, portfolios are frequently employed to assess CT as they can depict a student's proficiency in solving intricate problems, showcasing evidence of their work and completed projects for a more holistic assessment

Abstract

Science literacy in Indonesia is still far below the global average, thus highlighting the need for substantial improvement in science education, especially in science process skills. This study aims to analyze the basic science process skills of 4th grade elementary school students by using a descriptive approach through classroom observation and written tests. The results showed an average score of 54, categorized as poor, with the score of each aspect being observing 62 (fair), interpreting 61 (fair), classifying 56 (poor), predicting 54 (poor), planning experiments 51 (poor), and communicating 42 (bad). The study identified weak communication and experiment planning skills as the main factors contributing to low science literacy. Therefore, the implementation of inquiry-based learning strategies is essential to enhance science process skills and improve overall science literacy. The findings provide valuable insights for educators to design more effective and engaging science learning in primary schools.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate first-year university students’ experimental design skills in regional context of at a private teacher training institution (LPTK) in Singkawang, West Kalimantan. Utilizing a survey design, data were collected from 112 participants with diverse genders and secondary education backgrounds (Science, Vocational, and Social Sciences). The assessment utilized four targeted items from the Scientific Inquiry Literacy (ScInqLit) instrument developed by Wenning, translated and contextualized into the Indonesian context. Data were evaluated using Rasch model analysis to examine both overall competence levels and potential demographic bias through Differential Item Functioning (DIF). The results indicated that the students’ ability in designing experiments was remarkably low, as evidenced by a mean person measure of -1.15 logits, which falls substantially below the item difficulty baseline (0.0 logit). Furthermore, the DIF analysis revealed that all item probabilities exceeded 0.05, demonstrating that the instrument was free from gender and academic background biases. This neutrality implies that the low competence in designing experiments is a widespread issue across all student demographics. These findings emphasize an urgent need for LPTKs to redesign foundational science curricula, shifting from conventional “cookbook” laboratory tasks to explicit inquiry-based interventions to foster robust experimental design skill.

Abstract

Understanding Sun–Earth system phenomena remains challenging for many students because the underlying astronomical mechanisms involve cosmic-scale objects, spatial relationships, and dynamic processes that cannot be directly observed in their entirety. These difficulties often lead to an incomplete understanding and persistent misconceptions about insolation, variations in day and night lengths, and seasonal changes. This study aimed to investigate changes in preservice elementary teachers’ conceptual understanding of the Sun–Earth system after the implementation of the Phenomena-Driven Instruction (PhDI) model, assisted by Bi-Model media. A pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. The participants were 36 second-year students enrolled in an Elementary Teacher Education Program at a university in North Kalimantan, Indonesia. The instructional intervention was implemented through five stages of the PhDI model supported by Bi-Model media consisting of physical and virtual representations of the Sun–Earth system. Data were collected using the Level of Conceptual Understanding Test (LCUT), which covered four concepts: insolation, day and night duration, winter, and summer. The instrument was validated by five experts and demonstrated good internal consistency, with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.80. The results showed a consistent shift from lower levels of understanding, including partial understanding with misunderstanding, misunderstanding, and no understanding, toward higher levels, particularly partial understanding and sound understanding. The percentages of students reaching sound understanding were 52% for isolation, 58% for day and night duration, and 61% for both winter and summer. The novelty of this study lies in integrating phenomena-driven learning with dual physical and virtual model representations to support conceptual reconstruction of astronomical concepts. These findings suggest that PhDI assisted by Bi-Model media can support more scientifically acceptable explanations of Sun–Earth system phenomena and contribute to physics education by offering an instructional approach for teaching abstract, cosmic-scale concepts to preservice elementary teachers.
