Abstract

In the current global era, there is a distinct need for cross-cultural understanding (CCU) instruction. This study endeavored to explore participants' perspectives following the completion of a course designed to enhance students' CCU knowledge and appreciation for diversity through a sharing approach. Data were collected via questionnaires and reflection reports, which were distributed to university students through Google Forms. Utilizing an explanatory sequential design, the study involved 18 university students enrolled in the Nusantara Module. The findings indicated a positive acceptance of the sharing approach among the students. Furthermore, the students revealed that their sense of nationalism remained intact despite exposure to different cultures. These results have several implications, including a promising direction for the development of more effective CCU courses and the potential of educational programs to augment global understanding without undermining national identity. Nevertheless, further research is needed to validate these findings across diverse settings and demographics. Future studies may also explore the long-term effects of the sharing approach on students' attitudes towards cultural diversity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of e-scaffolding in blended learning on pre-service teachers' scientific explanation abilities as well as to find out the patterns of scientific explanation of pre-service teachers who learn by e-scaffolding in blended learning. This study employed mixed-method with concurrent embedded design. Quasi-experimental research design in the form of a one-group pretest-posttest control group design was used as a quantitative approach, whereas the learning process and scientific explanation patterns were described in a qualitative approach. The population of this study was 152 elementary school pre-service teachers of a state university at Malang, while the sample was 24 elementary school pre-service teachers in the seventh semester. The sample selection technique in the study was purposive sampling. The instrument used for measuring scientific explanation abilities was problem descriptions. The quantitative data were analyzed using the t-test, while qualitative data were analyzed using descriptive method. The finding of the study indicated that pre-service teachers' scientific explanation improved after learning with e-scaffolding in blended learning. The pre-service teachers were able to explain the relationship between theory and problems very well. The recommendation for future research, it is crucial to investigate the characterization of scientific explanation

Abstract

Understanding of cube and cuboid concepts is one of the essential goals of solid geometry learning. Most studies of students’ understanding of these concepts have posited a gap between the students’ surface area and volume conceptions of its and students’ understanding. The study aims to describe the students’ mental constructions in APOS (Action, Process, Object, and Schema) theory framework. This study used analysis of students as subject to three junior high school students who have differences in mathematical abilities with a qualitative approach. Data were collected by the task sheet and interview. The result of this study evidences that subject who has high mathematical ability could solve problems about cube and cuboid concepts correctly in the action stage. In the process and object stage, subject could provide detailed explanations of how steps to assess the surface area and volume of cube and cuboid. She compared two shapes with different sizes of cube and cuboid. In the schema stage, she made systematic understanding related to the concepts of surface area and volume of cube and cuboid. The subject who has medium mathematical ability explained her mental construction in action and process stage well, despite the error in the process stage. Next stage, she had compared two different shapes of cube and cuboid to found their ratio. The last stage, she had not completed her explanation. The subject has low mathematical ability could solve the problems about cube and cuboid concepts. At the process, object, and schema stage, she had not completed its indicators to show cube and cuboid concepts.

Abstract

Logical reasoning is very important to be used by as the basis of creative activities such as creating or applying mathematical concepts in the real world. By implementing Problem-Based Learning (PBL) with GeoGebra's assistance, logical reasoning abilities can be developed. This research intends to investigate the effect of utilizing GeoGebra to support PBL on students' capacity for logical reasoning while addressing economic mathematics problems. This study employed a quantitative method with one group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental research design. GeoGebra was used in classroom instruction as part of the PBL model to help students solve economic math problems logically. Following the implementation of PBL with the aid of GeoGebra, it may be inferred that there are disparities in students' capacities for logical reasoning based on the non-parametric statistical test of the Wilcoxon test. These findings demonstrate that using GeoGebra in collaboration with problem-based learning improves students' capacity for logical reasoning. GeoGebra-assisted PBL is recommended to be used as a medium to assist students in developing logical reasoning in solving economic mathematics problems.

Abstract

Facebook is a popular platform that supports the development of critical thinking skills through its discussion feature. One of these potentials is its use to encourage mathematical discussions and explore justification skills in solving problems. Mathematical justification skills include providing logical reasons for the steps in solving problems. This study aims to explore the mathematical justification of Facebook users in answering questions uploaded in Facebook groups. The justification levels refer to Back, Mannila, and Wallin: assumption, vague/broad statement, rule, procedural description, and own explanation. This study used a qualitative approach with an explorative research design. The study participants were 222 members of the SMP (Solution of Mathematics Problem) Facebook forum. Data were obtained through documentation of uploaded questions, comments from forum members, and non-participatory online observation. This study analyzed answers to three geometry problems uploaded in the forum, with six people selected as research subjects based on the diversity of their justification patterns. The results showed variations in the level of mathematical justification of forum members, from assumption to own explanation. Factors influencing differences in justification levels include understanding mathematical concepts and critical thinking skills. These findings indicate that Facebook can effectively encourage mathematical discussions and improve critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning can be influential in understanding learning materials. However, students’ mathematical reasoning skills are in the low category, especially in geometric transformation materials. This is due to the lack of learning media used by teachers. Therefore, this study aims to determine the process and result of developing mobile learning that is valid, practical, and effective. This research method is Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE development model consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The research began with observations and interviews followed by making a design in the form of storyboard. Mobile learning was constructed using Articulate Storyline 3 application integrated with TeacherMade App, GeoGebra, and Wordwall then implemented in learning. Evaluation was conducted at each stage to make improvements to the mobile learning. The participants of study involved 21 students of class VIII-C SMP Laboratorium UM as well as lecturers and teachers as validators. The instruments used were validation sheet, mathematical reasoning rubric, response questionnaire, and test questions. The result showed that mobile learning developed was valid with an average validity score for media of 3.53, material 3.35, technology of 3.66, and language of 3.25. Practicality test result based on student response questionnaires obtained an average score of 3.2 which indicates that mobile learning is practical, useful, and effective. The test results showed that 80.95% of students achieved more than KKTP based on mathematical reasoning with an average score of 80.24 so that mobile learning met the effectiveness criteria.
