Abstract

This article examines the contribution of Islamic philosophy and Islamic education to the realization of democratic elections in Indonesia. The study aims to analyze how the core principles of Hablum Minallah (tauhid and taqwa) and Hablum Minannas (adl, shura, and amal makruf nahi munkar) provide ethical and normative foundations for political participation and the strengthening of democratic values. A qualitative approach with normative-philosophical analysis is employed. Data are collected through a comprehensive literature review, including classical and contemporary Islamic philosophical works, relevant legal and policy documents, and studies on Islamic education and democratic practices. Thematic and normative analysis is used to synthesize and connect philosophical values with educational strategies and electoral ethics. The analysis shows that integrating Islamic philosophical values into educational practices—through curriculum development, extracurricular activities, and community-based da’wah and counseling—can enhance civic awareness, foster responsible citizenship, and promote integrity in the electoral process. Regulatory support from national educational policies further reinforces these efforts. Islamic education is identified as a vital mechanism for instilling democratic culture, ethical conduct, and resilience against challenges such as misinformation and identity politics. The findings suggest practical strategies for policymakers and educators to incorporate Islamic values into educational programs, aiming to support ethical democratic participation. These include curriculum integration, interactive civic education, digital literacy training, and targeted community engagement. This study offers an integrative framework that connects Islamic philosophical, normative, and educational dimensions to the practical challenges of democracy in Indonesia. By situating Islamic education as both doctrinal transmission and civic empowerment, the research provides a reference for further study and policy development at the intersection of religion, education, and democratic culture.

Abstract

The quality of Islamic education is a strategic issue in facing the challenges of globalization and people's demands for quality educational services. This article discusses the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) as a strategy to improve the quality of education in madrasas by emphasizing the principles of customer satisfaction, continuous improvement, teamwork, and the involvement of all stakeholders. This study uses a library research approach by analyzing literature, regulations, and previous research results that are relevant to the quality management of Islamic education. The results of the study show that quality development in madrasas requires the active participation of all parties, both internally (madrasah heads, teachers, staff) and externally (parents, community, government). The implementation of TQM in Islamic education includes strengthening organizational systems, setting clear quality standards, fact-based management, and a collaborative work culture oriented towards continuous improvement. Madrasas that successfully implement the principles of TQM are able to improve the quality of learning, stakeholder satisfaction, and competitiveness of graduates. This study confirms that the success of the development of the quality of Islamic education is highly dependent on collective commitment, visionary leadership, and awareness of the importance of maintaining the relevance of education to the needs of society.

Abstract

Some da'i/mubaligh/celebrity preachers began to emerge in Indonesia with their own distinctive style and approach. This study assumes that habaib, gus, celebrity preachers rely more on entertainment performance than oratorical competence in attracting members of the congregation (followers). The results of this study show that (1) majelis shalawat has utilized new media and technology through the internet for self-promotion; (2) the promotional power possessed by the majelis shalawat is also supported by its leaders who generally have the sacred genealogy of the Hadramaut or Walisongo; (3) Shalawat practice is carried out by combining the dimensions of spirituality and musicality so that it can attract the attention of millennial youth in urban and rural areas.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the Islamist issues presented by the Sabili magazine in post-New Order Indonesia from 1998 to 2004. This study is mainly inspired by the resurgence of Islamism as a consequence of political liberalization that resulted from the fall of Soeharto in May 1998. The press freedom permitted by president Habibie has given Islamic media such as the Sabili magazine the opportunity to operate relatively freely, unlike the restrictions faced during the New Order era. Sabili magazine, as the object of this study, has for sometime been a popular Islamic magazine among Muslim readers in Indonesia.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v12i3.582

Abstract

This article analyses the rising popularity of young ḥabā’ib and their da‘wah activism in contemporary Indonesia. The popularity of ḥabā’ib has also been followed by the proliferation of media and publications promoting both Hadhrami scholars and Hadhramaut. Distinct from scholars who emphasise domestic considerations, this study sees transnational connection as crucial to the facilitation of the ḥabā’ib’s da‘wah activism. The article argues that the reestablishment of ties between Indonesia and Yemen in 1990 in the field of education and preaching (da‘wah) has facilitated the growing authority of ḥabā’ib in Indonesia. These new connections have enabled young Indonesian Muslims to travel to Hadhramaut to study in traditional Islamic seminaries and to build their own da‘wah networks. By examining these new connections, this article pays particular attention to the charismatic Hadhrami scholar, Habib ‘Umar ibn Hafiz, his role and influence, as well as his students’ network in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

Studies on Ba'alawi preachers in Indonesia have predominantly focused on popular figures who utilize new media and popular culture in their preaching to appeal to young Muslims. However, there has been a lack of attention given to Ba'alawi preachers who avoid publicity and prioritize humanitarian activities. This article examines the case of Ḥabīb Abū Bakr al-‘Aṭṭās al-Zabīdī (popularly known as Abuya/My Father by his followers), who has garnered a significant following across several Indonesian provinces. His followers regard him as a generous, peace-oriented Sufi who not only advocates for spreading peace and kindness but also embodies these values through humanitarian acts towards those in need, regardless of their religion or ethnicity. This article explores his mobility in business and da'wah across Indonesia and analyzes the methods he uses to distribute charities and empower Muslim communities. The case of Habib Abubakar demonstrates that Sufism transcends mere individual asceticism and detachment from worldly possessions; rather, its spiritual essence is manifested through active involvement in social and humanitarian affairs.

Abstract

This paper attempts to examine how fundamental-radical epistemology forms after the return of the power of Taliban in Afghanistan. To arrive at this topic, the author would firstly review the terminology and historical roots of fundamentalism-radicalism, and the factors that caused its emergence and its characteristics. The author uses a historical-phenomenological approach in doing the literature research to write this article. In analyzing obtained data, the author is using descriptive-analytical, historical, and holistic techniques. The results found are: first, the emergence of the understanding of fundamental-radical, which was initially only a political phenomenon, turned out to lead to systemic violence, actual violence, action, and symbolic violence. These are still threatening humanity because of the characteristics of their movements that are unwilling to communicate and attempt dialogue with relevant groups. Second, the factors behind the rise of radicalism are two, namely: socio-political factors and religious-related emotional factors. Third, the epistemology of fundamental-radicals lays only on literal and textual understanding. According to them, the truth lies in the understood sacred text, as it is.
