Abstract

These days, the application of image processing in computer vision is becoming more crucial. Some situations necessitate a solution based on computer vision and growing deep learning. One method continuously developed in deep learning is the Convolutional Neural Network, with MobileNet, EfficientNet, VGG16, and others being widely used architectures. Using the CNN architecture, the dataset consists primarily of images; the more datasets there are, the more image storage space will be required. Compression via the discrete cosine transform technique is a method to address this issue. We implement the DCT compression method in the present research to get around the system's limited storage space. Using DCT, we also compare compressed and uncompressed images. All users who had been trained with each test 5 times for a total of 150 tests were given the test. Based on testing findings, the size reduction rate for compressed and uncompressed images is measured at 25%. The case study presented is face recognition, and the training results indicate that the accuracy of compressed images using the DCT approach ranges from 91.33% to 100%. Still, the accuracy of uncompressed facial images ranges from 98.17% to 100%. In addition, the accuracy of the proposed CNN architecture has increased to 87.43%, while the accuracy of MobileNet has increased by 16.75%. The accuracy of EfficientNetB1 with noisy-student weights is measured at 74.91%, and the accuracy of EfficientNetB1 with imageNet weights can reach 100%. Facial biometric authentication using a deep learning algorithm and DCT-compressed images was successfully accomplished with an accuracy value of 95.33% and an error value of 4.67%.

Abstract

Industrial processes that discharge heavy metals into the environment are a growing environmental crisis because of the dangers they pose to aquatic life and human health. Nickel (Ni) is one of the most dangerous metals due to its extreme toxicity and its ability to bioaccumulate in food chains. Severe health complications may develop from chronic exposure to nickel. Chemical precipitation, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis are traditional methods used to remove Ni(II) ions from wastewater. Nonetheless, these approaches have drawbacks, such as elevated operational costs, excessive chemical consumption, and inefficiency in treating low-concentration wastewater. The effectiveness of solvothermally synthesised chitosan as an adsorbent for the removal of Ni(II) ions from aqueous solutions was examined in this work. Acidity, adsorbent concentration, and contact duration were all carefully measured and analyzed. Optimal adsorption occurred at pH 6, yielding a maximum removal effectiveness of 75% after 75 minutes of contact. An adsorption efficiency of 54.69% was achieved with the optimal adsorbent dose of 0.4 g. Kinetic analysis indicated that the adsorption process followed the Pseudo-Second-Order (PSO) model, with a correlation coefficient (R²) of 0.999, suggesting that chemisorption prevailed via interactions between Ni(II) ions and the –NH? and –OH functional groups on the chitosan surface. The solvothermal modification improved the adsorption capability of the chitosan by increasing its surface area, porosity, and number of active sites. Abstract

Pre-reading skills are a crucial foundation for early childhood literacy development; however, conventional teaching methods often lack multisensory engagement, which limits their effectiveness. While previous studies have acknowledged the importance of sensory experiences, a gap remains in empirical evidence that quantitatively demonstrates the impact of specific tactile media, such as Sandpaper Letters, on pre-reading abilities in children aged 5-6 within localized educational contexts. This study aims to analyze the effect of Sandpaper Letter media on the pre-reading skills of children in this age group. Using a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design, the research involved 30 children from a kindergarten. The experimental group received learning interventions using Sandpaper Letters, while the control group used conventional methods. Data were collected through pre-reading skill tests and analyzed using normality tests (Kolmogorov-Smirnov) and an independent t-test. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group's letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and simple word formation skills, with a t-count of 1.934 exceeding the t-table of 1.729. The study concludes that Sandpaper Letter media is a practical, multisensory-based tool for significantly enhancing the pre-reading skills of children aged 5-6 years, offering a valuable strategy for early childhood educators.

Abstract

Banana is a climacteric fruit that continues to ripen after harvesting, and the ripening process plays a crucial role in determining its market value, taste, and consumer safety. In Tawangmangu, a highland region of Central Java, many banana fruit sellers still employ traditional and unsafe methods for ripening, including the use of non-food-grade chemicals. This community service program aimed to enhance the knowledge and practices of 10 local banana sellers by providing participatory training on natural and safe ripening techniques, with a focus on Ambon bananas (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum). The training combined theoretical education with hands-on practice in using ethylene-based and hygienic ripening methods. Pre- and post-test evaluations revealed a significant increase in participants’ understanding of postharvest physiology and food safety. Furthermore, 80% of the sellers demonstrated the ability to construct and apply low-cost ripening chambers using local materials, and reported reduced fruit spoilage, improved customer satisfaction, and increased marketability. The program successfully bridged the knowledge gap and introduced a practical, low-resource solution aligned with sustainable development goals. This model has the potential to be replicated in other rural agricultural markets to improve food safety and support local economic empowerment.

Abstract

The design of rigid pavement thickness on the Tempino-Muara Bulian road section, specifically on segment STA 00+000 to STA 02+200. This road section has experienced significant damage due to the increased traffic volume of heavy vehicles, especially coal transportation. An analysis was conducted to determine the optimal rigid pavement thickness to withstand the increased load and compare it with the existing conditions. Using the AASHTO 1993 method, the required concrete slab thickness was calculated to be 28.016 cm. However, the 2017 Pavement Design Manual recommends a slightly thicker slab of 29.3 cm. Meanwhile, the existing condition of 30 cm indicates that the current pavement has been designed considering factors such as future traffic growth or to accommodate potential overload. This study demonstrates the importance of accurate pavement design to ensure long-term road serviceability under heavy traffic conditions.
