Abstract

This article discusses Western ethics from a critical and Islamic perspective. Western ethics is often based on secularism and rationalism, which is considered to neglect the spiritual and metaphysical aspects of human beings. This research is a library research, as it relies on written data that discusses the topic being examined by the author. Each piece of literature obtained by the researcher presents data that is processed using deductive, inductive, and comparative techniques. From an Islamic perspective, Western ethics has several weaknesses, such as a lack of awareness of God's presence and individual accountability to Him. This article also discusses the concept of Islamic ethics, which emphasizes the importance of awareness of God's presence, individual responsibility, and balance between rights and obligations. By understanding the Islamic critique and perspective on Western ethics, we can gain a broader insight into morality and ethics in a global context.

Abstract

Indonesia is home to the world’s largest Sunni Muslim population, where Islam historically developed within the framework of ahl al-sunnah wa al-jamā‘ah, grounded in the creeds of al-Ash‘ari and al-Maturidi, the four Sunni schools of jurisprudence, and classical Sufism. This study examines the role of the Sunni tradition in fostering interfaith tolerance in North Maluku. Employing a qualitative approach, the research draws on field observations, in-depth interviews, and literature analysis, and is analytically informed by Sufi perspectives in Islamic thought and the concept of maṣlaḥah (public welfare) in Islamic law. The findings reveal that the Sunni tradition, particularly through its Sufi teachings, promotes a balanced model of religious moderation that integrates firm theological commitment with social openness. In Indonesia, Sunni Islam has played a significant role in nurturing interfaith tolerance not only at the theological level but also across social, cultural, and political dimensions, both conceptually and in everyday practice. In North Maluku specifically, from the era of the sultanates to the present day, the Sunni tradition has consistently contributed to harmonious interreligious relations, positioning religion as a source of universal compassion. As the majority religious orientation, Sunni Islam advances moderate teachings that encourage peaceful coexistence, as reflected in Sufi ethics and Shafi‘i jurisprudence, which emphasizes the pursuit of social welfare. Consequently, the Aswaja tradition has profoundly shaped Indonesian Islam as an inclusive, humane, and socially responsive religious expression.

Abstract

Sufism is a scientific field in which there have been many controversies and polemics in history and created the bonds we know today. In the course of the history of Sufism, almost all Islamic scholars and intellectuals agree that the existence of Sufism has existed since the time of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Where most Muslims recognize it as a scientific field that cleanses the heart, or a means to bring humans closer to God, their creator. Sufism has changed from time to time. In the past, it was just morals and now it involves Aqidah, giving rise to many pros and cons. Ittihad and Hulul are two aspects that cannot be separated among Sufism scholars. What is meant by Ittihad is a level in Sufism where a Sufi feels he is one with his God, the Almighty Creator; a level where loving and being loved have become one, so that one of them can call one by saying: hi me, while Hulul is a teaching which states that God has chosen the human body, of course to reside in it with divine nature, after The human nature in his body is eliminated first

Abstract

Abstract

The debate concerning the relationship between divine will and human freedom is a classic theme in Islamic thought that remains relevant to this day. On the one hand, Islam affirms the absoluteness of God’s will, as reflected in the concept of kun fayakun as a symbol of divine authority. On the other hand, the Qur’an also emphasizes human responsibility for actions and efforts through the principles of ikhtiar (human endeavor) and sunnatullah (divine laws). This study aims to critically examine the essence of God’s will and the position of human freedom from the perspective of Islamic thought, while positioning sunnatullah as a framework that bridges the two. This research employs a qualitative approach with a library research design, analyzing primary and secondary sources in the field of Islamic theology. The findings indicate that God’s will is absolute and unlimited, whereas human beings possess a limited yet accountable freedom. Sunnatullah functions as a divine law that enables humans to strive rationally without negating the supremacy of God’s will. Thus, the relationship between divine will and human freedom is complementary, in which human endeavor and divine decree mutually reinforce one another in shaping an ethical and meaningful life.

Abstract

A variety of literature explains the emergence of Shia. The teachings in Shia are very many and different, so we must seek and know the teachings, doctrines, and figures who have a big impact on this group. In addition, in this Shia sect there are many parts and differences of opinion in belief. Which is marked by the emergence of several sects such as Kaisaniyah, Zaidiyah, Imamiyah, and Kaum Gulat. This requires us to always be careful and anticipate the existence of harsh doctrines that may develop, or have even been so rapid in spreading their teachings to countries with a majority Muslim population, such as in Indonesia. One of them is stating that Ali bin Abu Thalib is the most important among the companions and is more entitled to hold the leadership of the Muslims. Even worse are those who worship and consider that Ali bin Abi Thalib is not an ordinary human being, but an incarnation of God or even God himself.

Abstract

Differences in religion, schools of thought, and legal schools (madhhab) are historical–theological realities inherent in the Islamic tradition. However, in contemporary socio-religious practice, these differences often undergo ethical distortions that lead to exclusivism, the delegitimization of other groups, and symbolic conflicts in the name of religious truth. This article aims to analyze the concept of ethics in religion, thought, and madhhab from an Islamic perspective using a normative–philosophical approach, and to affirm its relevance within plural Muslim societies, particularly in Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative method based on library research by analyzing primary sources (the Qur’an and Hadith) and secondary sources in the form of works by classical scholars and contemporary Islamic thinkers. The findings indicate that Islam normatively positions ethics as a fundamental foundation in responding to differences, as reflected in the principles of adab al-ikhtil?f (ethics of disagreement), tas?muh (tolerance), taw?zun (balance), ‘ad?lah (justice), and wasathiyyah (moderation). The novelty of this article lies in its normative–philosophical synthesis between classical Islamic ethical concepts and contemporary discourse on religious moderation, thereby framing adherence to a madhhab not merely as juridical loyalty, but as a moral–intellectual awareness aimed at preserving the common good (ma?la?ah) and social harmony.
