Abstract

This study aims to explore the acculturation and assimilation processes that ethnic Chinese in West Sumatra undergo upon converting to Islam, that the conversion does not lead to an outright abandonment of traditions. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive analysis approach, this research underscores how religious conversion fundamentally alters an individual's worldview and behavior. Converts to Islam are encouraged to earnestly learn and adhere to Sharia and Islamic teachings, initiating their spiritual journey with religious observances and distancing themselves from practices associated with their former beliefs. However, the conversion process is significantly influenced by one's environment, which plays a pivotal role in shaping the assimilation and acculturation experience of ethnic Chinese Muslims. This environment encompasses both familial and social contexts. The family environment, where individuals are connected by kinship—whether as children, spouses, or other familial roles—is marked by intensive interaction and communication. Yet, this close-knit communication does not necessarily guarantee a seamless conversion to another faith. Beyond the family, the surrounding social environment, including the workplace, extended family, and broader societal interactions, also impacts the conversion journey. Within these spheres, various factors either facilitate or hinder the process of embracing Islam for ethnic Chinese individuals. This study delves into these dynamics, examining the multifaceted influences on religious conversion and the subsequent negotiation between maintaining cultural heritage and adopting new religious identities. Through this analysis, the research seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between religion, culture, and identity among ethnic Chinese Muslims in West Sumatra

Abstract

Abstract

When Umar ibn al-Khattab succeeded Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, the Muslim armies continued their advance, conquering Persia, Syria, and Egypt, which were part of the Roman Empire. The spoils of war increased, and Umar faced new problems in dispatching supplies, organizing troops, and governing the conquered lands. As Muslims conquered more and more new territories, problems would arise from various dimensions of life. We reanalyze Umar ibn al-Khattab's actions in dealing with administrative governance issues, such as the placement of employees and governors and the allocation of finances. We approach this by heuristically collecting sources, verifying, analyzing, and explaining them descriptively. Ijtihad was one of the most prominent aspects of Umar's life during his phenomenal, eventful caliphate. He guarded and preserved the faith of the Muslims, raised the banner of jihad, conquered new lands, and spread Justice to all Muslim and non-Muslim communities. He established the first Ministry of Finance in Islam, formed a regular army to defend and protect the borders, arranged salaries and supplies, documentation, state archives, appointed governors, workers, and judges, and approved the currency for daily circulation. He was a multidimensional administrator and legal interpreter

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of language in digital promotions on the image of tourist destinations by highlighting four key indicators: message clarity, narrative appeal, language style, and cultural appropriateness. Destination image is measured through two main dimensions: cognitive perception, which relates to tourists' knowledge and rational understanding of the destination, and affective perception, which reflects the emotional bond and aesthetic impression formed. This study used a quantitative survey approach, collecting data from 110 respondents, residents of Tangerang City, using a purposive sampling technique. The results indicate that message clarity, narrative appeal, language style, and cultural appropriateness contribute significantly to shaping tourists' cognitive and affective perceptions. Among these variables, message clarity and narrative appeal proved more dominant in strengthening audiences' rational understanding of the destination, while language style and cultural appropriateness played a more significant role in building emotional closeness and trust in local values. These findings confirm that an effective digital promotion strategy relies not only on delivering factual information but also on packaging the message in a way that aligns with the cultural characteristics and linguistic preferences of the target audience. Theoretically, this research expands the study of tourism marketing communications by emphasizing the importance of linguistic and cultural dimensions in influencing destination image formation. Practically, the research findings provide strategic implications for tourism stakeholders in designing more persuasive digital promotional content, oriented toward local values, and supporting the sustainability of culture-based tourism. Thus, this research makes a significant contribution in bridging communication theory, destination branding strategies, and digital marketing practices rooted in local cultural wisdom.

Abstract

Islamic education for the Chinese Muslim minority in West Sumatra is a process fraught with challenges while offering significant opportunities in a multicultural society. This study aims to explore the supporting and inhibiting factors influencing the implementation of Islamic education in this community and to formulate strategies for optimizing its potential. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research employed in-depth interviews, direct observation, and literature analysis. The participants consisted of 15 Chinese Muslims (8 males and 7 females), aged between 25 and 60 years, including community leaders, educators, parents, and youth actively involved in Islamic educational settings in Padang and Payakumbuh. The findings reveal that social support from the local community, the presence of inclusive educational institutions, the role of organizations like PITI, and family economic stability are key supporting elements. However, the community faces significant challenges, including social discrimination, lack of support from formal institutions, difficulties in cultural integration, and limited awareness of the importance of religious education. This study recommends a collaborative approach between the government, educational institutions, and society to create a more inclusive educational ecosystem. Such efforts are expected to strengthen the Islamic identity of Chinese Muslims and encourage their active participation in a pluralistic society.

Abstract

The discourse of pregnant marriage is always interesting to study from a legal perspective, both Islamic and civil law, the different views of the fuqoha and also the controversy in understanding whether or not pregnant marriage is permissible. Different understandings are found in KHI which on one side is a normative backing and on the other side opens the room for adultery. As a result of being pregnant before, it was not a problem because children born during marriage became legal children, regardless of the age of the child's womb when both parents performed the marriage contract, while SE Director General of Islamic Guidance and Hajj Affairs No: D/ED/PW.01/03/1992 Regarding the Instructions for Completing Marriage, Divorce, Divorce and Referral Forms (NTCR), it is stated that a legitimate child is a child born at least more than six months from marriage, if the child born less than six months is interpreted as the child of the mother. One of the requirements for marriage administration is a birth certificate, if the first child is a girl, must be accompanied by a quote from the marriage book of both parents at the time of registration, this is to check the marriage date of both parents and also be equipped with a birth certificate to check when the child was born. So far, even if the birth certificate contains the names of both parents, but when confronted at the time of the examination the child was born less than six months after the marriage contract, the father's name was not listed in the marriage certificate. In line with this, from a legal perspective, the binding force between KHI and the Circular Letter is stronger than the KHI or Circular in the Registration and Implementation of Marriages.
