Abstract

This research aims to understand how the Taliabo Village community utilizes the potential of Sausu River rocks, identify the challenges faced by rock gatherers, and explore the socio-economic dynamics of the village in addressing these challenges. This research uses an inductive qualitative analysis. Inductive analysis is an approach that begins with field facts, analyzes them based on relevant theories and arguments, and ultimately yields a conclusion. The results show that gathering rocks in the Sausu River of Taliabo Village is a vital economic activity supporting the livelihood of part of the community. Adapting to natural conditions and using traditional tools like tire rafts and gate-gate demonstrate the community’s resilience and creativity in utilizing local resources. Although flexible working hours offer adaptation to uncertainties, the pricing structure of rocks based on their size provides significant economic opportunities. However, challenges such as natural conditions in the dry season and health issues add difficulties to this work. Furthermore, socio-economic aspects such as the culture of mutual aid underscore the importance of communal cooperation in overcoming hardships. At the same time, limitations in meeting education and housing needs reflect broader challenges faced by the river rock gatherer community in Taliabo Village. Therefore, the Government of Parigi Moutong Regency is recommended to support the rock gathering activities in the Sausu River as an essential part of Taliabo Village’s local economy. It could include providing training and access to more efficient technology to enhance productivity and work safety for river rock gatherers. Additionally, rock gatherers are advised to adopt safer and more sustainable work practices, including ergonomic tools and attention to occupational health and safety. For the Taliabo Village community, it is recommended that the existing mutual aid system be strengthened. These joint initiatives can help address some of the socio-economic challenges the river rock gatherer community faces while strengthening communal resilience against economic and natural uncertainties.

Abstract

This study analyzes the effect of oral presentation strategies on improving students' communication skills and self-confidence in an educational context, using quantitative research techniques. A group of students gave prepared presentations, and their performance was evaluated before and after the intervention. The results of the study show a significant increase in students' confidence when speaking in public, their understanding of the material presented, and their collaborative abilities during the planning and implementation stages of the presentation. There is also evidence that peer feedback and a supportive classroom can help students feel more calm, motivated, and active while they are giving a presentation.  These results show how important it is to teach pupils how to give oral presentations in school.  This way of learning encourages students to be involved and helps them grow as people, which is becoming more and more important in today's teaching methods. In addition, this study highlights the importance of utilizing technology to improve the quality and effectiveness of student presentations, which provides advantages in various educational contexts. Future research should investigate the long-term impact of this intervention on students' academic progress and career readiness, while considering demographic factors such as socioeconomic status and prior public speaking experience that may influence students' presentation skills. There is also proof that peer feedback and a supportive classroom can help students feel more comfortable, motivated, and engaged while they are presenting a presentation.   These statistics indicate how vital it is for schools to teach kids how to speak in front of a group.   This type of learning gets students interested and helps them grow as people, which is becoming more and more crucial in how teachers educate these days. This study also gives teachers useful tips on how to help kids improve their communication skills.

Abstract

This study explores advanced EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners' perceptions of using TikTok within Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in a speaking task context. TBLT is an approach to language teaching that enables learners to communicate in the real world via meaningful tasks; TikTok is a perfect platform for creating authentic content and engaging in meaningful tasks. This study employed a mixed-methods data collection approach and obtained data from 85 undergraduate English major students from a university in Indonesia. The data collection instruments included structured questionnaires in which students rated Likert-scale items and offered follow-up semi-structured interviews. The participants completed speaking activities where they created TikTok videos related to storytelling, discussion, and instructional content using the English language.Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data responses were coded using thematic analysis. The findings indicated that TBLT tasks that utilized TikTok increased student engagement, provided opportunities to develop speaking confidence and fluency as students were given repeating opportunities to see and perform, and, as well, students appreciated the flexibility to be creative, the multimodal nature of the content (audio, video, caption), the ability to re-watch and self-reflect their speaking performance, and reduced speaking anxiety. The students described that TikTok's format being asynchronous, and not requiring real-time oral performance allowed them to operate in a lower pressure environment associated with real-time events.

Abstract

In Indonesia, this study investigates how student voice is both constructed and restrained in EFL classrooms, using discourse analysis of classroom interactions in two senior high schools. The data was collected from four observed lessons, and analysed for patterns in turn-taking, speech function, and code-switching. The findings indicate, classroom talk is primarily dominated by teachers using the IRF pattern that constrains student voice. However there was improvement in student engagement and verbal output when teachers used dialogic strategies such as open-ended questions and scaffolding. Code-switching also emerged as an effective way to increase participation. These findings highlight the need to shift from teacher-centred, monolingual, and display pedagogy to more student-centred, multilingual and discourse aware approaches to teaching that promote teacher-learner participation and voice in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study looks at how English language teaching (ELT) teachers see evaluation processes and points out the challenges they run across when bringing them to pass. A mixed-methods approach was applied to interview a large sample of English teachers from various educational environments both qualitatively and statistically. The results reveal a strong inclination for formative assessment strategies that increase student participation and provide instantaneous feedback, such tests and peer review. Conversely, summative assessments—which resemble high-stakes tests—are sometimes viewed as demanding and as inaccurate of a reflection of students' actual abilities. This paper emphasizes major challenges to individualized feedback and inventive assessment strategies including time constraints, large class numbers, and pressure from standardized testing. The lack of opportunities for evaluation literacy professional development presented still another major challenge. Although technology integration in evaluations is thought to increase participation, it also raises questions regarding data protection and fair access. These findings underline the need of a comprehensive evaluation plan that honors formative activities and meets criteria for summative evaluation. Examined are recommendations for improved professional development and educational policy in order to support effective assessment strategies.

Abstract

Background: The synergistic association between oral cavity disorders and airway disorders in smokers has long been recognized. Periodontal disease and airway obstruction are 20 times more likely in smokers. Smoking causes increased inflammatory cytokines in the oral mucosa; generally, airway obstruction has been associated with increased inflammatory markers in the airway mucosa. This study developed a prototype to visualize smokers' oral mucosa to identify potential airway obstruction disease. Methods: This study collected many types of oral mucosal lesions that are typically found in smokers, such as leukoplakia, nicotinic stomatitis, black hairy tongue, oral cancer, and smoker melanosis, from various literature and images of the mucosa of patients with a history of smoking who were treated at the hospital. The data is divided into a training, validation, and testing set and then using the PyTorch framework and the UltraLytics library. Results: This study created a prototype of an endoscope that can detect lesions on the oral mucosa-related airway obstruction disease. Sixty-three percent of the respondents who underwent prototype testing were between the ages of twenty-one and thirty. Of those who smoked, 86% had done so for five to ten years. Sixty percent of the respondents had no COPD diagnosis. The sensitivity of the prototype demonstrated a high rate of 84%. However, the specificity exhibited 57.14%.Conclusion: Endoscopic detection of the oral mucosa can be used for early screening of suspected obstructive airway disorders in smokers. This tool could enhance screening for smoking's effects on the mouth and prevent early obstructive airway diseases.

Abstract

The addition of golden banana puree (Musa acuminata) as a prebiotic has been hypothesized to enhance the growth of lactic acid bacteria in kefir. This study aimed to determine the effects of adding golden banana puree on the pH value, total lactic acid bacteria (LAB) count, and viscosity of kefir. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and three replications. The treatments included the addition of 0% (P0), 6% (P1), 8% (P2), and 10% (P3) banana puree. The observed variables were pH value, total LAB, and viscosity. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) when a significant treatment effect was detected. The results indicated that the addition of golden banana puree had a very significant effect (P0.01) on the pH value, total LAB count, and viscosity of kefir. The study concluded that increasing the concentration of golden banana puree leads to a higher total LAB count and viscosity, while inversely lowering the pH value.
