Abstract

The transformation of an environment-based social program into a madrasah curriculum is an important issue in the development of character education in Islamic elementary schools, particularly when schools are expected to integrate ecological, social, and religious values into students’ learning experiences. This study aims to analyze the transformation of the waste donation program into an environmental philanthropy curriculum, its implementation in madrasah practices, and the supporting and inhibiting factors in its application. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design at MI Muhammadiyah 08 Pelangwot, Lamongan. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, field notes, and document studies involving the principal, vice principal for curriculum affairs, program coordinator, and classroom teachers as the main informants. The data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings show that the waste donation program transformed from a community-based social movement into a madrasah curricular practice through habituation, routine agendas, value reinforcement in learning, and character reflection. The implementation of the environmental philanthropy curriculum is reflected in Friday waste collection activities, school cleaning duties, waste sorting and selling, recording of proceeds, and the interpretation of waste as a medium of charity. The main supporting factors include madrasah leadership, teacher commitment, the role of the program coordinator, and community participation, while the inhibiting factors include students’ consistency, limited facilities, administrative challenges, and character evaluation. This study confirms that waste donation can serve as a contextual curriculum model that integrates character education, environmental education, and Islamic philanthropy in Islamic elementary schools.

Abstract

Waste problems in community and school environments are not only related to ecological concerns but also closely connected to the formation of moral awareness, social responsibility, and students’ character. This study aims to analyze how character education can be developed through environmental philanthropy in the waste donation program at MI Muhammadiyah 8 Pelangwot, Lamongan. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and supporting questionnaires involving teachers and students who participated in the waste donation program. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis through the stages of data familiarization, coding, theme development, theme review, and interpretation of findings. The results show that the waste donation program originated from the initiative of Pemuda Muhammadiyah in Pelangwot Village as a response to post-Eid al-Fitr waste problems, later gaining community support and becoming integrated into the madrasah’s regular program. This program contributes to the formation of environmentally caring character through the habituation of bringing waste from home every Friday, school cleaning duties, student involvement in waste collection, and the interpretation of waste as a medium of charity. In addition to supporting school finances and cross-subsidies for students from low-income families, the program also serves as a medium of educational communication that connects ecological, social, and religious values. This study confirms that environmental philanthropy can serve as a contextual, participatory, and applicable model of character education for Islamic elementary schools.

Abstract

The separation between religion and science in primary school learning often leads students to perceive science merely as empirical knowledge, while religion is positioned as a normative doctrine detached from their learning experiences. This condition highlights the need for a learning model that integrates scientific literacy, religious reflection, and character formation within a unified pedagogical framework. This study aims to analyze the implementation of an Integrative Religion and Science Learning Model in shaping the religious character of students at an Integrated Primary School in Probolinggo City. The study employed a mixed-method approach with a sequential explanatory design. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires administered to fifth-grade students to examine the relationship between the implementation of the integrative learning model and students’ religious character. Qualitative data were obtained through classroom observations and interviews with teachers and students to explain the learning processes, contextual dynamics, and pedagogical meanings underlying the model. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, classical assumption tests, multiple linear regression, and thematic analysis, and were subsequently integrated through a joint display. The findings indicate that the integrative religion and science learning model is implemented through the integration of learning objectives, science content and religious values, inquiry-reflective activities, and religious habituation within the school environment. The model contributes to the formation of students’ religious character through the strengthening of faith, worship practices, moral conduct, gratitude, responsibility, and social care. This study emphasizes that religious character formation cannot rely solely on verbal religious instruction but should be developed through science learning that is reflective, dialogical, and spiritually meaningful.

Abstract

The formation of religious attitudes in elementary school ged children is a foundational aspect of personality development, cultivated through the habituation of regular worship practices within the school environment. This study aims to analyse the effect and the magnitude of the contribution of congregational prayer habits to the religious attitudes of students at SD Muhammadiyah 29 Surabaya. The research employed a quantitative associative causal approach with a population of 50 fifth  and sixth-grade students. Data were collected using closed-ended questionnaires that had been tested for validity and reliability, and subsequently analysed using simple linear regression through SPSS version 26. The results indicate that congregational prayer habits have a positive and significant effect on students’ religious attitudes, with a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05). The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.639 shows that congregational prayer habits contribute 63.9% to students’ religious attitudes, while the remaining percentage is influenced by other factors outside the scope of this study. These findings confirm that the consistent implementation of congregational prayer within the school environment is an effective strategy for fostering and strengthening the religious attitudes of elementary school students

Abstract

This study examines QS Al-‘Alaq (1–5) and QS Luqmān (12–19) to formulate the objectives of Islamic education, reinforced by the perspectives of al-Ghazālī, Ibn Sīnā, Ibn Khaldūn, and Ibn Miskawaih. Using library research and thematic analysis of Qur’anic verses, classical works, and recent studies, it identifies epistemological and axiological foundations of Islamic education. QS Al-‘Alaq establishes an epistemological basis through the command iqra’, affirming Allah as the ultimate source of knowledge and encouraging intellectual and literacy development. QS Luqmān provides an axiological framework emphasizing wisdom, moral character, social responsibility, and ethical guidance. Classical scholars further strengthen this integration: al-Ghazālī stresses purification of the soul and unity of knowledge and action; Ibn Sīnā highlights holistic human development; Ibn Khaldūn underscores social formation; and Ibn Miskawaih focuses on moral training. The study concludes that Islamic education must adopt an integrative approach uniting spiritual, intellectual, moral, and social dimensions to form faithful, knowledgeable, and virtuous individuals.

Abstract

Social transformation in the modern era, driven by rapid digital technological development, individualistic lifestyles, and weakened emotional interaction within families, has contributed to various moral and psychological problems among children. In this context, the family, especially the mother, plays a central role in shaping children’s character through the internalisation of spiritual and moral values. This study aims to analyse the concept of maternal resilience in Islamic literature, examine the principles of spiritual parenting, and identify their relevance to children’s character formation in contemporary society. The research employs a qualitative approach using library research and a contextual hermeneutic method to interpret values derived from the Qur’an, hadith, and Islamic educational literature. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, thematic categorisation, hermeneutic interpretation, and conceptual synthesis. The findings reveal that maternal resilience in Islam is understood not only as the ability to cope with life’s challenges but also as spiritual endurance rooted in the values of ṣabr (patience), tawakal (trust in God), gratitude, compassion, and sincerity. These values form the foundation of spiritual parenting, enabling the development of religious, adaptive, empathetic, and morally virtuous children amidst the challenges of modernity.

Abstract

This study analyzes Al-Ghazali's concept of moral formation and reconstructs its relevance for contemporary education. The background is the growing moral crisis in modern society, characterized by character degradation, value disorientation, weak self-control, and the dominance of materialistic and pragmatic orientations in educational practices. This study employs a qualitative approach with a library research design. Primary sources consist of Al-Ghazali's principal works Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din, Ayyuha al-Walad, and Mizan al-'Amal supplemented by scholarly books, journal articles, and studies on moral and Islamic education. Data were analyzed through content analysis and philosophical-hermeneutical interpretation. The findings reveal that moral formation, according to Al-Ghazali, is not merely external behavioral regulation but an internalized disposition embedded within the soul, from which virtuous actions emerge naturally and consistently. Moral education must therefore be cultivated through tazkiyat al-nafs, mujahadah, riyadhah, habituation of virtuous conduct, exemplary role modeling, and the integration of knowledge and action. Al-Ghazali's thought offers a humanistic-spiritual educational paradigm integrating intellectual, moral, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. In the context of modern education, this paradigm is highly relevant for strengthening character education, religious school culture, ethical digital behavior, and holistic student development. The study concludes that Al-Ghazali's moral educational philosophy provides a transformative conceptual foundation for reconstructing contemporary Islamic education amid the moral and spiritual challenges of the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of parents’ morality in children’s education within the family environment from the perspective of Islamic education. The research employed a literature review method with a descriptive qualitative approach by collecting data from scientific journals, books, and previous studies related to family education, character education, and morality in Islam. Data sources were obtained from several academic databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, Garuda, and accredited Islamic education journals published between 2020 and 2026. The data were analyzed using content analysis to understand the concepts, methods, and relevance of moral education within the family in the modern era. The findings reveal that the family is the first and primary educational environment in shaping children’s character. Parents’ morality greatly influences children’s moral, social, and spiritual development because children tend to imitate the behavior of their parents as the main role models in their lives. Moral education within the family is implemented through exemplary behavior, habituation, advice, attention, and supervision based on Islamic values. In addition, this study found that the educational thoughts of Abdullah Nashih Ulwan and Maria Montessori are relevant in character building through educational approaches emphasizing role modeling, positive learning environments, and holistic character development. In the digital era, the role of parents as primary role models becomes increasingly important in guiding children to face the negative impacts of technology and globalization without losing moral and spiritual values

Abstract

The moral crisis among modern students has become one of the major challenges in contemporary Islamic education. The development of digital technology, globalization, and socio-cultural transformation has significantly influenced the behavior of younger generations, resulting in various forms of moral degradation such as declining ethics, weak self-control, individualistic attitudes, and decreasing respect for social and religious values. This condition indicates that modern education tends to emphasize cognitive achievement rather than moral character formation. This study aims to analyze the concept of moral education according to Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya and examine its relevance to the moral crisis of modern students. This research employs a qualitative approach based on library research using content analysis and contextual hermeneutic methods. Primary data were obtained from the works of Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, while secondary data were collected from scientific journals, academic books, and relevant previous studies. The findings reveal that Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah’s concept of moral education emphasizes the importance of tazkiyat al-nafs (self-purification), self-control, exemplary behavior, and spiritual development as the foundation of character formation. These concepts are highly relevant in addressing the moral problems of modern students because they integrate spiritual, moral, and intellectual dimensions within the educational process. This study implies the importance of strengthening character education based on spiritual values in the contemporary Islamic education system

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of digital media utilization in Islamic Religious Education (IRE), identify the challenges encountered in its implementation, and examine implementation strategies that can be applied within the Indonesian educational context. The study employed a qualitative approach using a library research method. Data were collected through a review of various relevant literature sources, including scientific journal articles, books, conference proceedings, and other academic documents. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis through the processes of data collection, reduction, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the digital media commonly utilized in Islamic Religious Education include instructional videos, Learning Management Systems (LMS), educational applications, e-books, and social media platforms. The use of digital media has been shown to enhance students’ learning motivation, expand access to learning resources, and promote more active and independent learning experiences. However, its implementation continues to face several challenges, including limited technological infrastructure, inadequate digital competencies among teachers, disparities in internet access, and the risk of misuse of digital information. Therefore, efforts to optimize the utilization of digital media in Islamic Religious Education require the enhancement of educators’ digital competencies, the strengthening of technological facilities and infrastructure, and the integration of digital literacy and Islamic values into the learning process. These strategies are expected to support the effective implementation of digital media and contribute to improving the quality of Islamic Religious Education in the era of digital transformation.
