Abstract

The research discussed Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM), an independent learning policy for universities in Indonesia issued by the Minister of Education and Culture in 2020. One highlighted policy was the right to study for students to study outside the study program for three semesters. The research intended to determine awareness and implementation of the MBKM program from students, lecturers, and education staff. The research applied a quantitative-descriptive method with a survey model. The research data and information were collected by distributing and filling out questionnaires at the Online Learning System (SPADA) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia. The data obtained were then processed through several analytical techniques, namely descriptive statistics using rank order and text processing and analysis. The population in the research consisted of students, lecturers, and educational staff at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Telkom University. The research indicates that the level of knowledge of lecturers, students, and educational staff regarding the MBKM program is relatively high, obtained from various sources of information, including through online/offline channels from the Directorate General of Higher Education. Follow-up that needs to be done as part of continuous improvement is the need for easy access to working groups at the Ministry of Education and Culture and the importance of socializing in terms of rules and technical aspects of MBKM implementation so that activities can run more optimally.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the intellectual biography of Henry Alexis Rudolf (HAR) Tilaar, one of Indonesia’s most prominent educational figures, particularly in the context of critical-transformative pedagogy. Tilaar viewed education not merely as a medium of knowledge transmission but as an instrument for liberating human beings from injustice, oppression, and social inequality by fostering critical awareness among individuals and society. The research employs the historical method with a literature review approach as the primary source to trace the dynamics of Tilaar’s educational thought over time. The findings reveal that Tilaar’s ideas evolved in an unusual trajectory: beginning with a conservative tendency in his youth, moving toward a constructive orientation during his service at Bappenas, and later becoming increasingly critical and radical after his retirement. This pattern stands in contrast to the general tendency among scholars, who often grow more conservative as their socio-economic status becomes more secure, whereas Tilaar became progressively more critical and radical in his educational perspectives.

Abstract

Student attrition remains a major problem in higher education. Although academic variables are well-established moderators, psychological wellness, especially stress, is an important but often ignored moderator. The purpose of this study is to construct prediction models for students at risk of dropping out by combining academic and psychological information. One major challenge in this field is the class imbalance of student records, which results in a significant drop in the dropout rate compared to the general population. Therefore, in this study, we employ a Decision Tree algorithm and use a Forward Chaining inference engine along with the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) to solve it. We employed a data set of 122 students at one institution, with psychological stress scores generated from a standardised questionnaire according to well-known symptom domains. The accuracy for the model with only a Decision Tree was 95.83%. For the stress score, integration with the FC-based attribute increased performance to 96.67%; however, this model exhibited only marginal improvement over the final model due to its very low accuracy when compared to that of SMOTE. This ensemble model performed the best with an accuracy of 97.50% and an AUC of 96.35%. This progression demonstrates that even though the introduction of psychological information is beneficial, an approach to balance data and ensure a robust prediction system is required. This article is a proof-of-concept analysis which creates an opportunity for universities to establish proactive, early-warning-driven models; yet there is a requirement for future validation studies on larger and more diversified samples.

Abstract

Academic stress classification is a significant challenge in education, as previous approaches often rely on opaque models or require large training datasets. This study develops a hybrid expert system for academic stress classification using forward chaining and Certainty Factor (CF) score fallback. The system was tested on 100 student cases with the following label distributions: Mild (48), Moderate (37), and High (13), classified independently by three experts. Label validity was tested using pairwise Cohen's kappa, yielding a mean value of 0.8280. The system achieved 100% accuracy, a 32% improvement over the classical forward chaining baseline (68%). Statistical evaluation using Wilson score intervals demonstrated high consistency across all key metrics (accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score) with a 95% CI of [96.4%, 100%]. The system is designed with an explicit and auditable rule structure, enabling deterministic classification based on symptoms. Although validation results are high, the unbalanced label distribution opens up the potential for spectrum bias. Going forward, the system is planned to be tested across institutions, assessed for integration with counseling services, and compared with other hybrid approaches.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines whether Sierra Leone’s succession of exchange-rate regimes since 1970 has been associated with changes in the alignment between the real exchange rate (RER) and its macroeconomic fundamentals. Using an Edwards–Elbadawi framework, the study combines ARDL bounds testing and error-correction modelling, Bai–Perron structural-break analysis, and forecast error variance decomposition to estimate the equilibrium RER and its misalignment over 1970–2024. The model incorporates terms of trade, trade openness, government expenditure, investment, net capital flows, a technology proxy based on real GDP growth, and the interest-rate differential. The results provide evidence of a long-run cointegrating relationship and a strong error-correction mechanism, with approximately 87% of the previous period’s disequilibrium corrected within one year. Although the full-sample average misalignment is close to zero (–0.21%), this conceals substantial variation: the Leone was undervalued in 25 years and overvalued in 30 years, with several annual deviations exceeding 30% in absolute magnitude. Regime-level average misalignment ranges from –26.48% during the liberalised but still managed float of 1986–1989 to +14.71% under the US-dollar peg of 1983–1985, while the 2010–2019 floating-with-managed-features period records the smallest absolute average misalignment (–0.12%). The Bai–Perron analysis further identifies significant breaks in the coefficient linking net capital flows to the RER in 1987, 2000, and 2010, indicating partial parameter instability rather than instability in the entire long-run relationship. Forecast error variance decomposition shows that government expenditure, trade openness, and terms of trade account for increasing shares of RER forecast uncertainty at longer horizons. Overall, the findings indicate that Sierra Leone’s RER misalignment is characterised by recurrent and sizeable deviations across changing policy and macroeconomic environments rather than by a persistent average distortion.
