Abstract

This review identifies and analyzes the varieties of science learning assessment applied in 21st-century science education. Despite the growing emphasis on scientific literacy and higher-order thinking, few studies have systematically mapped diverse assessment forms aligned with 21st-century competencies. To address this gap, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted on peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025 using the Scopus, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, ERIC, and Google Scholar databases. Twenty-seven studies meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed thematically. The review reveals five dominant assessment categories: authentic assessment, competency-based assessment, digital and technology- enhanced assessment, formative and reflective assessment, and collaborative assessment. These assessment approaches indicate a shift from traditional test-based evaluation toward assessing scientific reasoning, creativity, collaboration, and contextual problem-solving. The findings highlight that modern science assessment emphasizes process-oriented evaluation and the integration of digital tools to support adaptive feedback and learning analytics. This review contributes a comprehensive synthesis of assessment innovations in science education and underscores the need for holistic, technology-integrated evaluation practices. Strengthening teacher capacity in designing innovative assessments and conducting empirical studies on their classroom effectiveness is recommended for advancing science education in the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of implementing the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) approach on elementary school students’ scientific literacy and scientific attitudes. A quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. The participants consisted of 30 third-grade students from SD Negeri 100206 Pintu Padang, South Angkola District. Data were collected using a scientific literacy test in the form of essay questions, a scientific attitude questionnaire, and observation sheets to assess the implementation of the learning process. The data were analyzed quantitatively using the normalized gain (N-gain) to measure the level of improvement and a paired-sample t-test to determine the significance of differences between pretest and posttest scores. Prior to hypothesis testing, prerequisite tests, including tests of normality and homogeneity, were conducted. The findings indicate that the implementation of the STEM approach led to a substantial improvement in students’ scientific literacy. The mean score increased from 48.33 in the pretest to 88.33 in the posttest, with an N-gain value of 0.77, categorized as high. Similarly, students’ scientific attitudes improved significantly, with the mean score increasing from 49.50 to 89.17 and an N-gain value of 0.78, also classified as high. The paired-sample t-test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating statistically significant differences between pretest and posttest scores. These results suggest that the STEM approach is effective in enhancing both cognitive aspects (scientific literacy) and affective aspects (scientific attitudes). This effectiveness may be attributed to the characteristics of third-grade students, who are in the concrete operational stage of cognitive development. At this stage, students learn more effectively through direct experiences, hands-on activities, and real-life problem-solving. The STEM approach accommodates these needs by engaging students in practical investigations, collaborative tasks, and contextual learning, thereby making abstract concepts more tangible and meaningful. Therefore, the integration of STEM in science learning can be considered an effective instructional strategy to enhance students’ engagement, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in elementary education.

Abstract

The learning process in elementary schools is still predominantly teacher-centered and relies on limited teaching materials, such as printed books and worksheets, causing students to be less active and easily bored. The use of interactive digital teaching materials is also still minimal, which impacts students’ engagement and understanding, especially on the topic of the human respiratory system. Therefore, this study aims to develop a Problem Based Learning (PBL)-based e-module assisted by Heyzine Flipbook that meets the criteria of validity, practicality, and effectiveness for fifth-grade elementary school students. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4-D development model, which includes the stages of define, design, develop, and disseminate. The research instruments consisted of validation sheets, practicality questionnaires, and learning outcome tests in the form of pretest and posttest. The trial subjects consisted of fifth-grade students at SDN 11 Koto Marapak and SDN 07 Batang Kabung, while the research subjects were fifth-grade students at SDN 02 Talago Sariak. The validity test conducted by material, media, and language experts indicated that the e-module was very valid, with an average validation score of 94.67%. Based on the responses from teachers and students in the two trial schools, the e-module was categorized as very practical, with average scores of 96.25% and 98.05%, respectively. Meanwhile, the responses from teachers and students in the research school also showed that the e-module was very practical, with average scores of 97.5% and 98.6%, respectively. The effectiveness test in the two trial schools showed a result of 84.08% (effective category), while the research school showed 76.92% (effective category). Therefore, the Problem Based Learning-based e-module assisted by Heyzine Flipbook on the topic of the human respiratory system for fifth-grade elementary school students is considered very valid, very practical, and effective for use in learning.
