Abstract

Culture-based education serves as a pivotal approach to managing student diversity by integrating cultural and social dynamics into the curriculum. Despite the recognized benefits of Ethno-STEAM, existing instruments rarely capture critical thinking within culturally contextualized science learning, revealing a clear gap in both research and practice. This study aims to develop and validate a critical thinking assessment instrument for Ethno-STEAM-based Integrated Science learning. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) design, the study involved 150 Physics Science education students. The ADDIE model guided the process, starting with a needs analysis through interviews and classroom observations, followed by iterative stages of design, development, pilot implementation, and evaluation. Instrument feasibility was assessed through validity, reliability, differentiability, and difficulty tests. The resulting 14-item instrument received expert ratings of 3.775 (material) and 3.804 (media), categorised as excellent. It demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.91), with 12 of 15 items (80%) meeting validity criteria (r > 0.195). Items 7, 10, and 15 were invalid due to lower coefficients. This instrument offers educators a culturally responsive tool to evaluate and enhance students’ critical thinking in Physics Science classrooms

Abstract

The research objectives are to determine the effects of the Brain-based Learning (BBL) approach on students' higher-order thinking skills and student motivation to learn physics. This research used the quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design. The sample of this research consisted of two tenth-grade science classes chosen by simple random sampling technique. This research population was all tenth-grade students of a senior high school in Yogyakarta. The data were obtained by test and non-test techniques. The result shows that BBL approach affects on the students' higher-order thinking skills (sig. 2-tailed = 0,003 <α = 0.05). Further, it also improves students' higher-order thinking skills represented by the N-Gain value (experimental class N-Gain = 0.40 > control class N-Gain = 0.21). On the other hand, not only on student's higher-order thinking skills, BBL approach bring the significant effect on students’ motivation in learning physics (sig. 2-tailed = 0,000 <α = 0.05) as well as could improve it (experimental class N-Gain = 0.55 > control class N-Gain = 0.04). It means that the BBL approach could improve higher-order thinking skills and students' motivation more effectively than the traditional approach

Abstract

School leadership encompasses various aspects, including the role as both a spiritual and academic leader. However, in practice, many school principals have yet to optimally fulfill these two roles in a balanced manner. Principals tend to focus more on technical and administrative matters, while their role in fostering a spiritual culture within the school is often overlooked. As a result, there is an imbalance between students' academic achievements and character development at school. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the concept of school leadership, particularly the dual role as a spiritual and academic leader, to explore how these roles are synergized within the school environment, and to identify the challenges faced in realizing balanced and effective leadership. The findings indicate that the implementation of spiritual and academic leadership in schools is inseparable from various internal and external challenges, such as the lack of principals' understanding regarding these roles and limited support from the school community. Nevertheless, several strategies can be applied to address these challenges, including enhancing principals' competencies through holistic leadership training and promoting collaboration between principals, teachers, and school committees to develop both spiritual and academic capacities in a balanced manner.

Abstract

Islamic education holds a comprehensive orientation, emphasizing not only academic achievement but also the cultivation of noble character and personal development in line with Islamic values. In this regard, leadership in Islamic education plays a crucial role in shaping the vision and culture of institutions with Islamic character. This study explores how Islamic values are integrated into educational leadership practices. Employing a qualitative approach through library research, it examines conceptual frameworks and theories derived from classical and contemporary Islamic thought, as well as modern leadership models. The findings reveal that effective Islamic educational leadership integrates prophetic leadership principles (humanization, liberation, transcendence), transformational leadership grounded in Islamic ethics, and participatory leadership based on the concept of shura (consultation). Core values such as shiddiq (honesty), amanah (trustworthiness), tabligh (effective communication), fathanah (wisdom), and ‘adl (justice) are central to the leadership approach. The study also identifies key strategies for implementation, including value-based vision development, cultivating an Islamic organizational culture, leadership capacity-building programs, and comprehensive evaluation systems. Despite challenges from internal organizational resistance and external pressures of globalization, the integration of Islamic values into leadership has the potential to enhance the integrity, effectiveness, and holistic impact of educational institutions. This research contributes to the development of a contextually relevant Islamic educational leadership model responsive to the demands of modern education while maintaining spiritual integrity.
