Abstract

Swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) play an important role in supporting the economy and social life of the community in the East Sumba Regency. The prevalence and intensity One of the diseases still a health problem in livestock, including buffalo, is parasite infection. Research on cases of parasite infection in buffaloes in the East Sumba Regency has not been widely reported. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify the parasites that infect the buffalo as well as to measure the prevalence and infection rates. The coprological examination of 105 samples of swamp buffalo feces from the East Sumba Regency was conducted in this study. The simple flotation and the modified McMaster method were used to identify and measure the degree of infection of Nematode, Cestode, and protozoan oocyst, while the modified Danish Bilharziasis Laboratory (DBL) method was used to detect the presence of Trematodes. The results showed that 67 out of 105 buffaloes (63.81%) had parasite infections, which were caused by a single (44.76%) and mix infection (19.05%). The prevalence of infection with Nematodes, Trematodes, and Protozoan oocysts in males (73.33%) was much higher than in female (60.00%) buffalo; nevertheless, the chi-square test results showed that sex was not associated with the prevalence of parasites infection cases (p>0.05). Age was a risk factor that had a significant effect (p<0.05), with the young age group having the highest odds ratio (OR) value (5.80), followed by the age group of the calf (3.10), and pre-weaned calf (2.98). The highest to lowest infection rates were observed in Cestodes (547.03 EPG), followed by Protozoa (220.70 PG), Nematodes (84.75 EPG), and Trematodes (2.18 EPG). The present study shows that buffalo in East Sumba Regency are infected with several parasites, so control must be made to prevent losses due to the infection. Keywords - Bubalus bubalis, East Sumba, fecal examination, gastrointestinal parasites, the prevalence

Abstract

Equipping knowledge and developing critical thinking skills about social and economic issues to students is important. This study aimed to analyze the ability of prospective students of Islamic State of Madrasah of Insan Cendekia (ISM-IC) to think critically about socioeconomic problems. This research reveals a critical thinking skills gap among prospective students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah/Islamic Junior High School (IJHS) and non-IJHS who participated in the national selection of new students (NSoNS). This study uses a cross-sectional survey approach with standard instruments from the NSoNS ISM-IC. Data was obtained from 1,832 participants in the social sciences group test, consisting of 1,197 people from IJHS and 635 from non-IJHS. Data analysis using R Programming, package ‘ggstatsplot’, and via Microsoft Excel. The result is: i) a gap in social studies scores between IJHS and non-IJHS students of -0.215, with the social studies scores of IJHS students lower than non-IJHS; ii) critical thinking skills are proven to have a very real impact on the occurrence of social studies score gaps, through the inability of students to answer the higher-order thinking skills (HOTs) category questions. This finding indicates the urgency of the education unit to provide nuanced literacy models and learning and HOTs to increase think of critic ability about socioeconomic matter.

Abstract

The decline in blue swimming crab populations can be caused by overfishing and several factors of the aquatic environment, such as anthropogenic pollution, water quality and the presence of ectoparasite in the crab. Molecular studies are essential to validate a particular species of ectoparasites and ectosymbionts that infect Crab. A total of 143 crabs were sampled from fishermen in Demak, Muara Gembong and Labuhan Maringgai. Six ectoparasite and ectosymbionts species, Chelonibia testudinaria (Crustacea), Dianajonesia tridens (Crustacea), Octolasmis angulata, O. warwicki (Crustacea), Ostrea puelchana (Mollusca) and Thompsonia sp. (Crustacea) were isolated. Three ectoparasite and ectosymbionts species that were successfully validated based on the COI mtDNA genes were C. testudinaria, D. tridens, Oc. angulata. Validation of isolated ectoparasites infecting P. pelagicus was performed using the mtDNA marker COI gene to identify three ectoparasite species molecularly, namely C. testudinaria, D. tridens, and Oc. angulata. The results of the five sample analyses of ectoparasites based on the number of specific nucleotide sites in each sample show that the suspected species C. testudinaria, D. tridens and Oc. angulata had missense mutations.
