Abstract

The implementation of the Independent Curriculum in 2022 places improving numeracy skills as one of the priority programs for basic education in Indonesia. Early numeracy skills are an important foundation for children's cognitive development and long-term academic success. This study aims to evaluate and identify the most effective early numeracy learning strategies in supporting the strengthening of elementary school students' numeracy skills. The research method used is a systematic literature review with a qualitative-descriptive approach. Data sources were obtained through manual searches of 18 scientific journal articles and 4 conference proceedings published in the last five years. Of the total 22 publications analyzed, six learning strategies were found to be consistently reported as effective: (1) explicit learning through short-term interventions, (2) the use of concrete manipulatives, (3) the use of visual representations, (4) providing corrective feedback, (5) involving parents in the learning process, and (6) game-based learning. The last strategy is the most dominant, mentioned in eight different studies, with variations of digital and traditional games adapted to the local context. The results of this study provide a comprehensive illustration of relevant and implementable approaches in early numeracy learning. These findings contribute to providing an empirical basis for policy makers and educators to design contextual, adaptive, and evidence-based numeracy learning programs.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the dominance of teacher-centered, one-way history learning patterns, which tend to make students passive and limit their ability to develop reflective thinking skills. To overcome this problem, the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach is seen as a relevant alternative because it emphasizes the connection between teaching materials and students' cultural backgrounds and experiences. This study aims to analyze the effect of CRT implementation on students' reflective thinking skills in learning about historical relics from the Islamic period in Indonesia. The research design used was a quasi-experiment with a non-equivalent control group design model. The research subjects consisted of two classes, namely the experimental class that received learning with the CRT approach and the control class that used the Teacher Centered Learning (TCL) approach. The research instruments included a reflective thinking ability test and a student response questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted through prerequisite tests, Independent Sample T-Tests, and Effect Size calculations using Cohen's D formula. The results showed that student responses to the application of CRT were positive. The t-test produced a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the experimental class and the control class. The Effect Size value of 0.97 was in the moderate category. Thus, the application of the CRT approach was proven to have a real effect on improving students' reflective thinking skills, where students were better able to understand the material, evaluate it, and form new experiences in formulating solutions based on their own understanding.

Abstract

Affective factors such as math anxiety have become a global concern in elementary education, as they have the potential to hinder students' cognitive development and engagement in mathematics learning. In the context of public elementary schools in a semi-urban area of Sragen Regency, this study aimed to analyze the effect of learning motivation on mathematics anxiety in fourth-grade students. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design, focusing on the comparison between the intervention group and the control group. A total of 95 students were selected through cluster random sampling. Data were collected using a learning motivation questionnaire based on Self-Determination Theory and a validated mathematics anxiety scale. The analysis showed that increasing learning motivation significantly reduced levels of mathematics anxiety. Moreover, linear regression indicated a strong negative relationship between the two variables, with learning motivation explaining most of the variance in anxiety. These findings confirm that strengthening intrinsic motivation plays a significant role in reducing students' emotional distress towards mathematics. Therefore, motivation-based pedagogical strategies are recommended as an effective approach to creating a more positive and adaptive learning experience in elementary schools.

Abstract

Numeracy encompasses not only the manipulation of numbers and their operations, but also the application of concepts, procedures, facts, and mathematical tools to problem solving. In numeracy, there are cognitive levels that form a hierarchy of thinking, which includes knowing, applying, and reasoning. The cognitive level of reasoning involves the process of formulating problems, using mathematical concepts or procedures, and interpreting solutions in real-life contexts. To reach this level, analytical thinking is required, as FI individuals have a tendency to organize unorganized objects and vice versa. This research aims to describe how FI students use their numeracy skills to solve social arithmetic problems that arise in daily life at each cognitive numeracy level. A case study design was chosen as an alternative to achieve research objectives. Data collection was carried out using test-based interviews. Students are given two stimuli related to ratios and percentages, with each stimulus having three questions adjusted to the cognitive level of numeracy and followed by an interview. The data is then reduced and presented until valid conclusions are obtained based on data saturation. The results of the research show that FI students are able to identify known things related to ratios/percentages and explain the concept of ratios/percentages in solving social arithmetic problems. They are able to create mathematical models and apply these models to solve social arithmetic problems, provided that they pay more attention to writing down the solution steps to minimize writing errors. FI students can draw conclusions based on ratio/percentage information and provide arguments to support claims related to ratios/percentages in solving social arithmetic problems. If FI students remember to always use notation, the conclusions they draw will be correct. The research's three FI students met the indicators, but there are a few points that need further emphasis.         Keywords: numeracy, cognitive level, field-independent, ratio and proportion.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i1.pp373-385
