Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine the meaning and relevance of the teachings of birrul walidain (filial piety to one's parents) in modern life through a comparative analysis of two contemporary thematic interpretations: Tafsir Al-Misbah by Quraish Shihab and Tafsir Al-Munir by Wahbah Az-Zuhaili. Theoretical framework: This research is based on the theoretical framework of Islamic ethics and the approach of thematic interpretation (maudhu'i), taking into account the normative and contextual dimensions of the verses of the Qur'an related to birrul walidain. Islamic morality theory is also used as a foundation in understanding the formation of individual and societal morals. Literature review: The literature review includes literature on contemporary thematic interpretations, the values of birrul walidain in the Qur'an, and socio-cultural dynamics related to changes in family values and moral challenges in the modern era. The literature also highlights the difference in approach between Quraish Shihab and Wahbah Az-Zuhaili in interpreting Islamic values. Methods: This study uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach. Primary data sources were obtained from two main tafsir works, namely Tafsir Al-Misbah and Tafsir Al-Munir, while secondary data came from relevant supporting literature. Results: The results of the study show that both interpretations affirm birrul walidain as a form of obedience to Allah and the moral foundation of life. Tafsir Al-Misbah emphasizes the social and psychological aspects contextually, while Tafsir Al-Munir emphasizes the normative and legal aspects of Sharia. Both agreed that birrul walidain includes respect, emotional support, financial assistance, and maintaining parental honor. Implications: These findings enrich the understanding of the relevance of the value of birrul walidain in the modern era and show the importance of an adaptive approach in applying the teachings of the Qur'an in the contemporary social context. This research also contributes to the development of thematic interpretations that are responsive to the dynamics of society. Novelty: This research offers a new contribution by comparatively analyzing two contemporary interpretations from the perspective of applying the value of birrul walidain in the modern context. This approach has not been widely used in the study of thematic interpretations that connect traditional values with contemporary reality.

Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework of this research refers to digital literacy and technology integration in education. Digital literacy is defined as the ability to utilize technology to support learning, while technology integration aims to improve the quality of education without ignoring the values of religious education. Literature review: This study refers to two main journals. First, Fahmi & Layyinnati discuss the optimization of the digital Qur'an in learning. Second, Lisyawati examine digital literacy in Islamic Religious Education in madrasas. These two studies show the importance of digital literacy to support more effective and relevant religious learning. Methods: The method used was a literature review by analyzing two journals related to the digital Qur'an and digital literacy in Islamic religious education. This analysis aims to explore the relevance and challenges of technology integration in Qur'an learning. Results: The results of the study show that the digital Qur'an can increase learning motivation, expand access to interpretation, and support learning flexibility. However, key challenges include limited infrastructure, teacher readiness, and the risk of exposure to invalid religious information. Implications: The implications of this study show the importance of strengthening digital literacy in learning the Qur'an in schools, as well as the need to improve infrastructure and training for teachers in order to effectively integrate technology in Islamic religious education. Novelty: This research offers a new approach to integrating digital literacy in Qur'an learning, with a focus on the challenges and opportunities of technology integration in the digital age as well as recommendations for relevant learning strategies.

Abstract

Social media has increasingly become a primary source of religious information accessed by Muslim adolescents. Religious content delivered through platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube tends to be more engaging and easy to understand, which can enhance interest in learning religion. However, not all information available on social media is accurate or derived from qualified sources, potentially leading to shallow, biased, or misleading religious understanding. Based on the literature review, social media exerts both positive and negative influences on the religious comprehension of Muslim youth. Therefore, religious digital literacy and guidance from families, educators, and religious institutions are required to ensure that the process of learning religion through social media remains structured and accountable.

Abstract

Learning the Qur'an in Islamic Elementary Schools requires an approach that emphasizes not only reading skills but also understanding the meaning and internalizing the Qur'anic values contextually. However, learning practices that are still dominated by conventional methods have the potential to reduce student engagement and interest in learning, especially in narrative materials such as animal stories in the Qur'an. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Qur'anic Magic Cards media as a learning medium for animals in the Qur'an in increasing the understanding and interest in learning of students in Islamic Elementary Schools. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the use of the Qur'anic Magic Cards media can help students understand the meaning of verses more concretely, increase active involvement during learning, and foster interest in learning the Qur'anic material. This media also contributes to creating a fun, contextual, and meaningful learning atmosphere, so that the messages of the Qur'an are not only understood textually but also internalized in the learning process. Thus, the Magic Quran Cards can be used as an innovative and relevant alternative Quranic learning medium for implementation in Islamic Elementary Schools (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah).

Abstract

Abstract

The Qur'an is a revelation of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and the basis of Islam is a guide for humans for a good afterlife. The Qur'an is a treatise, a form of great gift that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala bestows on humans towards virtue, goodness, avoiding misguidance, peace and being merciful and good news for people who surrender wholeheartedly to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala (Qur'an 16:89). The Qur'an is a sacred book that was revealed as guidance based on knowledge and as proof of the truth (Qur'an 7:52). As evidence of the oneness of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in the Qur'an, there is a lot of knowledge based on the Qur'an such as the creation of man (Qur'an 23:12-14). Not only detailed in its creation, but Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala also states clearly, that humans are the best of creation (Qur'an 95: 4). Humans are special and perfect creatures, however, behind the perfection that humans have, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gives lust as a fitrah to be used as an impetus in human survival. Lust has a strong influence on humans, the more it intervenes in a pure heart, the easier it is to mix the heart with the impulse of lust that is worldly. The lust that tends to the physical encourages humans to get pleasure and enjoyment from lust. Examples such as pride, greed, arrogance, and ingratitude. It causes man to begin to change what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given him. This article examines the thoughts of several mufasirs regarding Yugayyirunna Khalqallāh (changing Allah's creation). This study is library research with a qualitative approach. The data collection used is documentation. This study utilizes the works of 7 carefully selected mufasirs. The data is analyzed using the contents analysis method. The study found that Yugayyirunna Khalqallāh is divided into several parts such as (i) physical and non-physical changes (ii) permissible and prohibited changes (iii) permanent and non-permanent changes (iv) the impact of Yugayyirunna Khalqallāh behaviour in the perspective of science.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the understanding of verses related to the Essence of Allah (Dhat Allah) in the Qur'an through a thematic exegesis approach (tafsīr al-maudhū'i) and to compare the theological interpretations of three major Sunni schools: Salaf (Ahl al-Sunnah), Ash‘ariyah, and Maturidiyah. Methodology: This research employs a qualitative approach based on library research. The data are derived from classical and contemporary Qur’anic commentaries, theological works, and relevant academic journals. Thematic exegesis is applied by collecting, classifying, and analyzing Qur’anic verses concerning the divine attributes, followed by a comparative analysis of the interpretative methods used by the three theological schools. Results: The findings indicate that the Salaf school adopts a textual approach by accepting the verses as they appear without interpretation (tafwīḍ), while the Ash‘ariyah employ a mediating approach by applying ta’wīl to verses that may imply anthropomorphism. Meanwhile, the Maturidiyah demonstrate a stronger rational tendency by interpreting most of the ambiguous (khabariyyah) attributes to preserve the purity of monotheism (tawḥīd). Originality/Value: This study highlights that the differences among the three schools are methodological rather than ideological, reflecting the richness of Islamic intellectual tradition. It contributes to contemporary theological discourse by promoting a moderate and tolerant understanding of the mutashābihāt verses related to the Essence of Allah, particularly in responding to modern theological challenges.

Abstract

The spiritual doctrine of Manunggaling Kawula Gusti in Javanese Kejawen mysticism emphasizes inner union between servant (kawula) and God (Gusti) yet raises theological concerns from Islamic tauhid perspective regarding essential unity. This study critically examines the doctrine's origins, concepts, and compatibility with Islamic monotheism. Employing a qualitative literature study method with descriptive analysis, the population comprises primary Kejawen texts (e.g., Zoetmulder, Simuh) and Islamic theological sources (e.g., Ibn Taimiyyah, Al-Ghazali); purposive sampling targets thematic relevance. Instruments include textual documents, analyzed via content and comparative analysis with source triangulation. Findings reveal conceptual overlaps in spiritual purification and fanāʾ (ego annihilation) but fundamental divergence: Kejawen implies potential ontological merger, rejected by tauhid upholding Creator-creation distinction. Conclusion advocates symbolic reinterpretation within Sunni Sufism for cultural accommodation without doctrinal deviation.
