Abstract

This study aimed to develop a pocket book on the types of macrofungi found in the Pekanbaru City Forest as a valid supplementary teaching material for biodiversity learning in Grade X senior high school. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method using the ADDIE model, which consists of five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. However, this study was conducted only up to the Development stage. The pocket book was designed at the Biology Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Riau. The developed pocket book was subsequently validated by two experts, namely a media expert and a subject matter expert. The media validation instrument assessed three aspects: content feasibility, language feasibility, and visual presentation. Meanwhile, the material validation instrument evaluated content feasibility, language, and presentation or illustration aspects. The validation results indicated that the pocket book on the types of macrofungi in the Pekanbaru City Forest achieved an average validity score of 3.9, which falls within the highly valid category. Therefore, the pocket book is considered suitable for use as a supplementary learning resource for teachers and students in senior high school biology learning, particularly on biodiversity topics.

Abstract

Naturalistic intelligence is one of the dimensions of intelligence that contributes to students’ ability to recognize, understand, and care for the natural environment. In biodiversity learning, naturalistic intelligence is presumed to be associated with students’ cognitive learning outcomes because the subject matter is closely related to natural phenomena. This study aimed to determine the relationship between naturalistic intelligence and the cognitive learning outcomes of tenth-grade students on biodiversity material at SMAN 8 Pekanbaru. The study employed a quantitative correlational research design involving 109 tenth-grade students as the sample. Data on naturalistic intelligence were collected using a questionnaire, while cognitive learning outcome data were obtained through a test. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product-Moment correlation test. The results showed that students’ naturalistic intelligence was categorized as moderate, with an average score of 2.51, while their cognitive learning outcomes were categorized as sufficient, with an average score of 77.83. Correlation analysis revealed a positive and significant relationship between naturalistic intelligence and cognitive learning outcomes in biodiversity learning, with a correlation coefficient of 0.529 (p < 0.05), indicating a moderate level of association. Therefore, higher levels of naturalistic intelligence tend to be accompanied by higher cognitive learning outcomes.

Abstract

Litter is an important component of forest ecosystems that plays a significant role in nutrient cycling, humus formation, and carbon storage. The Arboretum Forest of the University of Riau possesses diverse tree vegetation with the potential to produce substantial amounts of litter; however, information regarding its litter production rate remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the tree litter production rate in the Arboretum Forest of the University of Riau. A quantitative descriptive method was employed through direct observations at three sampling stations: shaded, transitional, and open areas. The collected litter data were analyzed to determine litter production rates based on the dry weight of the litter produced. The results showed that the tree litter production rate in the Arboretum Forest of the University of Riau was 282.8 g/m²/week, equivalent to 147.05 tons/ha/year. The transitional station exhibited the highest litter production rate at 175.02 g/m²/week, followed by the shaded station at 72.06 g/m²/week and the open station at 35.72 g/m²/week. Leaves were the dominant litter component, contributing a total production of 230.23 g/m²/week. These findings indicate that vegetation characteristics and environmental factors influence litter production within the arboretum forest ecosystem.

Abstract

Genetic literacy is an essential component of scientific literacy that enables students to understand genetic concepts and make evidence-based decisions. However, the level of genetic literacy among Indonesian high school students remains relatively low, particularly in the topic of heredity patterns, which is often taught theoretically and lacks connections to real-world issues. This study aimed to develop a Student Worksheet (LKPD) based on contextual issues in heredity patterns to strengthen the genetic literacy of senior high school students. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, implemented up to the development stage. The product was validated by subject matter experts and media experts and subsequently tested through limited trials involving 10 Biology Education students and 43 senior high school students. Data were analyzed descriptively using a Likert scale. The results showed that the developed LKPD achieved a media expert validation score of 3.8 and a subject matter expert validation score of 3.9, both categorized as highly valid. The limited trial results obtained an average score of 3.6, categorized as very good. Overall, the contextual issue-based LKPD achieved an average quality score of 3.7, categorized as very good, indicating that it is suitable for use as a learning resource to support genetics instruction in senior high schools.

Abstract

Putat seeds (Barringtonia conoidea Griff.) are a local biological resource with the potential to be utilized as a natural ingredient in liquid soap production due to their presumed saponin content, which can generate foam and exhibit antibacterial properties. However, their application as a raw material for liquid soap remains relatively unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of liquid soap perlakuanted with putat seed extract at different concentrations. An experimental method was employed using four treatment concentrations of putat seed extract: 0%, 5%, 7%, and 9%. The observed parameters included pH, homogeneity, foam height, organoleptic properties, and irritation potential. Data were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively using the average values of each parameter and compared with the quality standards for liquid soap. The results showed that all perlakuantions had pH values ranging from 8.3 to 10 and met the required liquid soap quality standards. All perlakuantions were homogeneous, with no evidence of clumping or phase separation. The addition of putat seed extract increased both foam height and foam stability, with the 9% perlakuantion producing the highest foam height of 105 mm and foam stability of 92.67%. In general, increasing concentrations of Barringtonia conoidea Griff. seed extract positively influenced the physical characteristics of the liquid soap, particularly in terms of foam height and pH. Therefore, Barringtonia conoidea Griff. seed extract has been proven to be utilizable as a natural ingredient in liquid soap perlakuantion with physical characteristics that meet the quality standards of SNI 2588:2017.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the Deep Learning learning strategy, examine the improvement of students’ critical literacy skills, and identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in its implementation in expository text learning for Grade XI students at MAS Nurul Iman. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects were 20 students, consisting of 10 male and 10 female students. Data were collected through observation, critical literacy tests, interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed that the Deep Learning strategy improved students’ critical literacy skills. In the pre-action stage, the students’ average score was 61.75, with a low completion rate. After the intervention in Cycle I, the average score increased to 80, and all students (100%) achieved scores above the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM). Improvements were observed in understanding the structure of expository texts (91.25%), analyzing content and ideas (82.5%), evaluating arguments (76.25%), relating texts to real-world contexts (75%), and language use and clarity of responses (75%). Students’ learning activities also became more active, interactive, and reflective. Supporting factors included student engagement, group discussions, and teacher guidance, while the main obstacles were differences in students’ abilities and limited discussion time. Therefore, the Deep Learning strategy was effective in improving students’ critical literacy skills in expository text learning.
