Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This investigates moral education through spiritual reinforcement of teachers in the Qodiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah Tarekat at MA Darul Ulum Karangpandan, Pasuruan, addressing contemporary moral degradation in formal education. Employing qualitative case study methodology with triangulated data collection, the research is grounded in the theo-anthropocentric paradigm and Islamic intellectual traditions. Three principal findings emerged. First, "kun ma'a man ma'allah" constitutes the conceptual framework, operationalized through tazkiyah al-nafs, istiqāmah, muḥāsabah, and divine love. Second, implementation occurs through dual approaches: value internalization via takhallī and taḥallī strategies incorporating bay'ah, riyāḍah, tawajjuhān, and qudwah; and institutional integration through religious activities and performance appraisal systems. Third, implications manifest in teachers' spiritual transformation encompassing ma'rifatullāh, al-wa'y al-ilāhī, and takhalluq bi akhlāq Allāh. The study demonstrates how Sufistic moral education cultivates ethical consciousness among educators within formal educational contexts.

Abstract

Improving student achievement is a complex challenge that requires an adaptive leadership approach, especially in educational institutions with different environmental and curricular characteristics. This phenomenon demands a profound understanding of how instructional leadership strategies are effectively implemented in the field. Therefore, this study aims to analyze and compare the principals' strategies in improving student achievement in two educational institutions with different characteristics: Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) IMAMI Kepanjen and Elementary School 4 Panggungrejo. This study used a qualitative approach with a multi-site study design. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies to obtain a comprehensive picture of the policies and program implementation in both locations. The findings indicate that at MI IMAMI, the strategy focused on six integrated approaches: developing collaborative programs based on the Independent Curriculum, improving teacher quality through academic supervision, systematic learning evaluation, providing adequate facilities, developing interests and talents, and intensive communication with parents. Meanwhile, at Elementary School 4 Panggungrejo, the strategy emphasized integrated program planning, improving teaching staff competencies, supplementary and remedial programs, strategic partnerships, and a comprehensive reward system. The results of this study indicate that a contextual approach and strong instructional leadership are key to successfully improving student achievement across multiple dimensions. This study provides theoretical and practical contributions regarding the importance of adapting leadership strategies that are responsive to institutional characteristics and the specific needs of students at the elementary school level.

Abstract

This study addresses the research gap regarding how Islamic authority is contested and reconstructed in the era of digital media, where social media dynamics disrupt traditional hierarchies. It aims to analyze how online Islamic preaching is transformed by social media logics, aesthetic strategies, and audience engagement, emphasizing the participatory and dialogical nature of comment sections. This research adopts a qualitative design using a netnographic approach, observing and analyzing social media content produced by prominent Indonesian Islamic figures, including Hanan Attaki, Abdul Somad, and Habib Husein Ja’far. The dataset comprises YouTube sermons, Instagram posts, TikTok videos, and user interactions, including comments and shares. Findings reveal the emergence of "religious influencers" who blend piety with branding, the commodification of Islamic preaching, and the evolution of comment sections into semi-public arenas of theological debate and negotiation. These interactions show how authority is no longer solely institutional but co-produced with audiences in real time. This study demonstrates that digital da’wah democratizes access to religious discourse while raising concerns about theological integrity, commercialization, and regulation challenges. It argues that understanding these dynamics is essential for developing critical digital religious literacy and fostering more inclusive, reflective, and ethically grounded online Islamic communication.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the sanad validity and to develop a contextual interpretation of a prophetic tradition on learning narrated by Abu Hurayrah and recorded in al-Tirmidzi's Sunan (Kitāb al-Zuhd). Textually, the hadith may give rise to interpretive ambiguity and appears to be in tension with Qur’anic principles and other prophetic traditions concerning the relationship between worldly life and knowledge. This research employs a library-based qualitative method using Musahadi HAM’s hadith-criticism approach, which integrates sanad criticism, matn criticism, and maqāṣid-based contextualization through historical, eidetic, and practical analyses. The findings indicate that the hadith is classified as ṣaḥīḥ and maqbul, despite its status as an āḥād gharīb narration. Eidetic analysis reveals that the hadith does not constitute a total condemnation of the world; rather, it represents a universal critique of materialistic life orientations detached from divine values. The explicit exception granted to scholars (‘ālim) and learners (muta‘allim) affirms that knowledge and the process of learning constitute the ethical foundation that renders worldly life meaningful and enables social transformation. In the context of contemporary education, this hadith provides an ethical framework for deep, meaningful, and transformative learning, resonating with the paradigm of deep learning that emphasizes internalization of values, character formation, and moral transformation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the epistemology of transformational leadership integrated with the traditional values of Islamic scholars in shaping the character of students in the digital era, using a case study at the Nurul Haramain Almaliki Islamic Boarding School in Karangploso, Malang. A qualitative approach is used to explore how Kiyai Hasan Basri actualizes a transformational leadership style—which emphasizes vision, exemplary behavior, motivation, and individual attention—in the context of Islamic boarding school education, which is rich in Islamic traditional values. The results show that Kiyai Hasan's leadership successfully shapes the character of students through a combination of spiritual and strategic approaches that balance adab, discipline, and awareness of changing times. While maintaining classical learning methods such as sorogan and bandongan, this Islamic boarding school gradually opens up space for digital literacy without eliminating Islamic moral and ethical values. This integration is evidence that tradition and transformation can go hand in hand in shaping students who are virtuous, independent, and adaptive to the digital era. Thus, the epistemology of transformational leadership framed by the traditional values of Islamic boarding schools becomes a strong foundation in the character education of today's Islamic boarding school students. The study aims at studying the concept of Islamic integralism according to Armahedi Mahzar and also the epitymology of the Islamic science according to Agus Purwanto in an attempt to create the paradigm of Islamical integralism in building a global civilization. This research includes a type of library research that analyzes some literature based on the study of Islamic integralism. From the results of the research, the research found that Armahedi Mahzar offers the concept of universal integralism known as the tauhid paradigm if it emphasizes its divine aspekon, and the wahdatiyyah paradigm when it emphasises its integrity aspekon. And Agus Purwanto, proposing a new approach in the construction of science in Islam, namely Islamic Science based on the Qur'an as the first foundation in the building of science. From the thought of the two was born the Concept of the Paradigm of Islamic Integralism as an attempt to build a global civilization that believes that Islamic Sciences must be source and based on Wayhu and Islamic science as thanksgiving to God so that technology should be combined with gratitude to Allah SWT.

Abstract

The shift in educational values in the digital era has added further strains between the traditional authoritarian pedagogy and the reflective and egalitarian nature of millennial learners. This research will explore the role of mahabbah pedagogy as an affective–relational process of negotiating this tension during character education in pesantren. The research contribution is that it conceptualizes mahabbah pedagogy as an affective-relational pedagogical framework and provide empirical evidence of its role in mediating the relationship between tradition and modernity in Islamic education. This research is a qualitative study that relies on an intrinsic case study design that is conducted at Bahrul Ulum Tambakberas Islamic Boarding School, Jombang. Purposive and snowball sampling methods were used to collect data by way of participatory observation, semi-structured interviews with kiai, ustaz, and santri, and documentation. Inductive data analysis was done using data reduction, displaying data and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that mahabbah pedagogy is reflected in the affective relationships that are empathetic, emotionally close, and trustful, which create a dialogical and reflective learning environment. It acts as a relational process of cultural mediation and the mitigation of tensions between hierarchical traditions and egalitarian learner attributes. Moreover, it encourages transformative reflection by the methods of self-knowledge and internalization of values. The study presents three fundamental elements, namely, affective relationships, cultural mediation, and transformative reflection, that conglomerate to create the wholeness of character development of santri. Finally, mahabbah pedagogy presents a theoretically based and practically applicable model in the development of humanistic, adaptive and transformative education, and in providing a platform upon which future integration can be achieved within digitally mediated learning environments.

Abstract

The phenomenon of Nyai in pesantren life reveals a paradox between their substantial contributions and their lack of narrative recognition. Nyai often serve as the center of caregiving, moral education, female student development, management of women’s relations, and the emotional support system of the pesantren. However, public narratives of pesantren more frequently position the kiai as the primary figure, the owner of history, and the symbol of institutional authority. Previous studies on pesantren have extensively discussed the kiai as the central figure, yet only limited research has specifically examined how the contributions of Nyai become invisible within pesantren narratives. This article aims to analyze the invisibility of Nyai by employing Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic capital and Nancy Fraser’s theory of recognition. This study uses a qualitative method with a socio-critical approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and analysis of pesantren institutional narratives. The findings show that: (1) there is a separation between the labor of pesantren life and the symbolic ownership of pesantren narratives, in which Nyai sustain the daily life of the pesantren while kiai dominate as the owners of symbolic narratives; (2) the authority of Nyai experiences a gendered conversion failure, namely the failure of Nyai’s social, cultural, religious, and affective capital to be converted into public authority; and (3) the invisibility of Nyai occurs through partial recognition, where Nyai are respected as caregivers and moral figures but are not yet fully acknowledged as central subjects in pesantren history. Academically, this article contributes by offering a new analytical framework for understanding narrative injustice in women’s religious authority within pesantren. Institutionally, this article encourages pesantren to develop more equitable historical documentation, media representation, and formal recognition of Nyai’s contributions.
