Abstract

Mathematical representation skill is students' ability to express mathematical ideas (such as problems, statements, and definitions) in various ways to solve problems through multiple representations, such as images, words, tables, and symbols mathematics. Students are struggling in representing mathematical ideas. It hampers them in determining the solution of mathematical problems. They are careless in reading the word problems, lacking problem analysis, less thorough, and struggling to connect concepts. The subjects of this study were in two students from one of the junior high school in Jambi. The instruments used for this research were VVQ, Mathematical Representation Ability Test and interviews. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The results showed that the representation abilities of students with visualizer and verbalizer style were quite good. However, each subject had a different way of solving problems. Visualizers were more interested in questions with image information in solving the problem. Verbalizer tended to prefer information with detailed wording.

Abstract

This study aims to map the prior knowledge of students and lecturers regarding basic physics laboratory implementation, the integration of local wisdom, and the mastery of critical thinking and science process skills, in order to identify learning gaps that demand instructional innovation. Using a descriptive–exploratory method, the research involved 60 Physics Education students and 10 lecturers from Universitas PGRI Silampari through a validated questionnaire measuring four aspects: laboratory implementation, integration of local wisdom, critical thinking and science process skills, and learning constraints and expectations. Descriptive and quantitative analyses were conducted based on Likert scale criteria. The findings show that laboratory activities remain dominated by procedural “cookbook” practices with limited inquiry opportunities. Both students and lecturers acknowledge the value of integrating local wisdom to enhance conceptual understanding, yet limited facilities and the lack of contextual guidelines pose major obstacles. The study concludes that inquiry-based laboratory designs integrated with local wisdom are urgently required to shift practices from verification toward authentic scientific exploration. Theoretically, this research contributes to contextualized science education models, while practically offering a framework for lecturers and institutions to reform laboratory practices into more meaningful, culturally relevant, and skill-oriented learning experiences.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and validate a web-based five-tier isomorphic diagnostic instrument to identify students’ misconceptions on temperature and heat concepts in junior high school. This research employed a quantitative developmental approach, involving instrument development, construct validation, and descriptive analysis of students’ responses. The instrument consisted of nine multiple-choice items structured into five tiers and was validated using factor analysis (Principal Component Analysis), with all items showing factor loadings greater than 0.50. Reliability testing using Cronbach’s alpha yielded a coefficient of 0.745, indicating high internal consistency. A total of 101 eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 12 Jambi participated in the study by completing the web-based diagnostic test. The results identified 13 types of misconceptions, with an average misconception rate of 12.56% across all tiers, indicating that although students’ overall misconceptions were relatively low, several fundamental concepts related to temperature and heat remained problematic. The most common misconception was that dividing an object divides its temperature, accounting for 36.6%. Compared to conventional one-tier or two-tier diagnostic tests, this five-tier isomorphic instrument provides more detailed diagnostic information by incorporating students’ reasoning and confidence levels. Therefore, this instrument contributes to science education research by providing a valid, reliable, and practical tool for diagnosing students’ conceptual understanding and supporting more effective instructional planning in physics.

Abstract

This study investigated the integration of Pancasila values into ethnomathematics-based learning through a project-based learning approach to enhance students’ problem-solving skills. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group was conducted at SMAN 8 Muaro Jambi, involving 62 grade XI students. The instruments consisted of a mathematical problem-solving test, observation sheets, and rubrics for assessing Pancasila values during learning activities. Data were analyzed using paired and independent sample t-tests, normalized gain (N-Gain), and effect size. The findings revealed that the posttest mean score of the experimental class, taught by using the PjBL integrated with ethnomathematics contexts including weaving patterns and local architectuaral designs, was significantly higher than that of the control one (78.94 compared to 69.48). The N-gain of the experimental group (0.61) belonged to medium-high, while that of the control group was only 0.32. Cohen’s d for effect size was 0.82, which was classified as a large effect. Qualitative results also described that collaboration, tolerance, and responsibility in the experimental class were higher, which indicated the implementation of Pancasila values in project activities. The results of this study show that an integration of ethnomathematics and Pancasila values in PjBL can enhance the both student’s problem-solving skills and character.

Abstract

Abstract: Misconceptions constitute a serious issue in physics education as they hinder students’ conceptual understanding. This study aims to systematically map the distribution of misconception topics, the characteristics of diagnostic instruments, and the effectiveness of misconception-reduction methods based on empirical evidence. A total of 200 articles were retrieved from Scopus, Google Scholar, and ERIC and screened using the PRISMA framework, resulting in 40 eligible studies (2014–2025, empirical research, clearly identified diagnostic instruments, and full-text availability). The selection process involved identification, title–abstract screening, and full-text eligibility assessment to ensure methodological rigor. The findings indicate that three-tier and four-tier diagnostic tests are the most frequently used instruments, while misconceptions are most prevalent in mechanics, followed by electricity and magnetism, waves and optics, and thermodynamics. Multi-tier instruments demonstrate greater effectiveness in revealing students’ conceptual structures compared to conventional tests. This review provides an integrated synthesis map that supports evidence-based diagnostic assessment and remedial strategies in physics education.
