Abstract

Abstract

Selecting a university major represents a pivotal developmental task for senior high school students, yet many struggle with uncertainty regarding their academic capabilities. Within this context, self-efficacy, the belief in one's capacity to execute actions necessary to achieve specific goals, plays a critical role in facilitating informed and confident decision-making. This study examines the potential effectiveness of a group guidance intervention integrating Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) principles with role-playing techniques to enhance students' self-efficacy in major selection. Employing a quasi-experimental nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group design, the study involved 11th-grade students at SMAN 20 Batam. Ten participants with moderate baseline self-efficacy levels were assigned to the experimental group through purposive sampling. Data were gathered using a self-efficacy questionnaire adapted from Bandura's (1999) theoretical framework, and analyzed via the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. It is important to note that the results presented herein are based on simulated data, intended to illustrate the proposed analytical procedure and intervention design. Simulation outcomes indicated a statistically significant improvement in self-efficacy scores within the experimental group (p = 0.012), whereas the control group showed no meaningful change (p = 0.230). These findings suggest that CBT-based group guidance incorporating role-playing may serve as a promising strategy for fostering students' confidence in academic decision-making. Practically, this approach offers school counselors and educators a structured, theory-informed module to support adolescents during a critical transitional period. Future research with fully implemented empirical data and larger, randomized samples is recommended to validate these preliminary insights.

Abstract

Phubbing behavior is a phenomenon where individuals ignore their conversation partners in direct interactions because they are too focused on their smartphones. This phubbing behavior is increasingly prevalent and has become a serious concern considering its impact on the quality of social interactions and interpersonal development. The influence of smartphone use makes students careless and insensitive to their surroundings. One factor suspected of contributing to the level of phubbing behavior tendencies is peer conformity. Therefore, this study aims to describe and analyze the relationship between peer conformity and students' phubbing behavior tendencies. This study used a quantitative method with a descriptive correlational research type. The research sample was 208 students using a simple random sampling technique. The instruments used were a peer conformity scale with a reliability level of 0.945 and a student phubbing behavior tendency scale with a reliability level of 0.881. Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation with the JASP 0.19.3.0 program for Windows. The findings of this study indicate that the relationship between peer conformity and students' tendency to phubbing behavior is generally in the moderate category with a Spearman correlation coefficient value of 0.400 (ρ < 0.001). The positive correlation results indicate that the higher the peer conformity, the higher the tendency of students to phubbing behavior. This study recommends the need for comprehensive efforts by school counselors and related parties to develop counseling service plans to reduce the tendency of phubbing behavior. Keywords: Peer conformity, phubbing behavior, smartphone, students, counseling

Abstract

Phubbing behavior is increasingly common among adolescents as smartphone use rises, and has the potential to disrupt the quality of social interactions and student development. This study aims to analyze the contributions of social norms and the Big Five personality traits to phubbing behavior among high school students in Padang City, both in partial and in simultaneous models. The study used a quantitative approach with an associative design, involving 322 eleventh-grade students selected through purposive and proportionate random sampling techniques. Data were collected using the phubbing behavior scale, social norms scale, and Big Five personality traits scale, which showed acceptable validity, and then analyzed using a multiple regression model in SmartPLS. The results showed that social norms contributed positively and significantly to phubbing behavior (t = 10.486, p < 0.001). Partially, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and neuroticism contributed significantly, while openness and extraversion did not. Simultaneously, social norms and the Big Five personality traits explain 37.8% of the variance in phubbing behavior (R² = 0.378). These findings support an integrative perspective that views phubbing as the result of interactions between social and personality factors and offer practical implications for guidance and counseling interventions that focus on the socialization of social norms and students' personality characteristics. Abstract

Background: Empty nest syndrome is a psychosocial condition frequently experienced by older adults following children’s independence and departure from the household. This transition may lead to loneliness, loss of social roles, reduced meaning in life, and increased vulnerability to mental health problems. A holistic and culturally sensitive approach is therefore required. Hamka’s philosophical thought, emphasizing moral integrity, spiritual awareness, and social responsibility, offers a relevant framework to strengthen Guidance and Counseling (BK) services for older adults in Indonesia. Methods: This study employed a conceptual literature review of Hamka’s philosophical works, peer-reviewed articles on elderly mental health, and policy documents related to BK services. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify moral, ethical, and spiritual values relevant to the psychosocial needs of older adults and their potential application in counseling services. Results: The analysis identified core values including moral integrity, spiritual strengthening, character development, and redefinition of social roles in later life. These principles align with the psychosocial challenges of empty nest syndrome and can inform individual and group counseling interventions. Conclusion: Integrating Hamka’s philosophical values into BK services may enhance holistic mental health and psychosocial well-being among older adults within the Indonesian cultural context.
