Abstract

Introduction: Unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions remain significant public health concerns in Indonesia, particularly among young women in urban areas. This study aimed to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding contraception among young women residing in urban Indonesia, employing a mixed-methods approach to gain an in-depth understanding of this complex issue. Methods: This study used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. The quantitative phase involved a cross-sectional survey of 500 young women aged 18-24 years residing in Jakarta, Indonesia. A structured questionnaire assessed their knowledge about various contraceptive methods, attitudes towards contraception, and current contraceptive practices. The qualitative phase comprised in-depth interviews with 30 participants purposively selected from the survey sample to explore their experiences, beliefs, and perspectives on contraceptive use. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression, while thematic analysis was employed for qualitative data. Results: The quantitative findings revealed that while the majority of participants had good knowledge about contraception, misconceptions and gaps existed regarding specific methods, particularly long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs). Attitudes towards contraception were generally positive, although concerns about side effects and social stigma were prevalent. The prevalence of current contraceptive use was moderate, with condoms and oral contraceptive pills being the most common methods. Qualitative findings provided deeper insights into the factors influencing contraceptive use, including perceived susceptibility to pregnancy, partner communication, family and social influences, access to healthcare services, and religious beliefs. Conclusion: This study highlights the need for comprehensive sexuality education programs tailored to address misconceptions and promote informed decision-making about contraception among young women in urban Indonesia. Strategies to improve access to youth-friendly contraceptive services and address social and cultural barriers to contraceptive use are also essential.

Abstract

Introduction: Ear injuries are a common health problem and can cause significant hearing loss. Tissue regeneration in injured ears is still a big challenge. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have shown potential for tissue regeneration in various organs, including the ear. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effectiveness of MSCs in tissue regeneration in ear injuries. Methods: We conducted a literature search in various electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus, for studies examining the use of MSCs in tissue regeneration in ear injuries. Inclusion criteria included randomized controlled studies, prospective observational studies, and cohort studies examining the effectiveness of MSCs on hearing improvement, regeneration of ear structures, and reduction of inflammation. Results: A total of 12 studies with a total of 342 participants met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis results showed that MSCs significantly improved hearing improvement (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.67, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.42-0.92, p < 0.001) and ear structure regeneration (SMD = 0.53, 95% CI 0.28 -0.78, p < 0.001). MSCs also showed effectiveness in reducing inflammation (SMD = -0.48, 95% CI -0.73-0.23, p < 0.001). Conclusion: MSCs are an effective and safe therapy for tissue regeneration in ear injuries. Further research is needed to optimize treatment protocols and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of MSCs.

Abstract

Hyperuricemia is a condition where there is an increase in blood uric acid levels above 7 mg/dL in men and 6 mg/dl in women. One of the enzymes that plays a role in hyperuricemia is xanthine oxidase which can inhibit uric acid synthesis. Tempuyung leaves (Sonchus avernis) are one of the plants that have antihyperuricemia properties. This study aims to determine the effect of ethanol extract of tempuyung leaves on xanthine oxidase in vitro. Tempuyung leaves come from Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia, and are macerated with 96% ethanol until a thick extract is obtained. The xanthine oxidase inhibition test was carried out on tempuyung leaf extract and Allopurinol with respective concentrations of 6.25; 12.5; 25; and 50 ppm and followed by absorption measurements using UV-V spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 293 nm and determining the IC50 value. The research results showed that the ethanol extract of daun tempuyung leaves had an IC50 value of 23.37 ppm, higher than allopurinol of 17.16 ppm which was used as a reference. These results classify the ethanol extract of daun tempuyung leaves as a strong inhibitor of the xanthin oxidase enzyme. Therefore, the ethanol extract of daun tempuyung leaves has the potential to be anti hyperuricemic.

Abstract

"Pelukku Untuk Pelikmu" is a musical work from a musician and book writer, Fiersa Besari. It was released as the soundtrack of the movie "Imperfect: Career, Love, & Scales" in 2019. Carrying the theme of self-confidence from one's insecure nature, this song is also intended for those who experience downturns and experience mental decline due to various problems in life so that they need positive encouragement to rise from these conditions. Therefore, indicators of social support are closely related and can be measured using sign analysis proposed by Ferdinand de Saussure. In his theory, Saussure describes five language concepts in the linguistic system that can be a knife to dissect the meaning of a text or sentence. Meanwhile, social support is divided into four types, namely emotional support, information support, instrumental/real support, and friendship support. The results of the meaning in the song lyrics will then classify each sentence in it into one of these types of support. The approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative by analyzing the relationship between Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic theory and the concept of social support and then drawing conclusions based on the results of the analysis.
