Abstract

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) remains a leading cause of neonatal mortality and long-term neurodevelopmental disability worldwide, with therapeutic hypothermia emerging as the standard neuroprotective intervention for eligible neonates with moderate to severe HIE. We report a case of a late preterm female neonate (36-37 weeks gestation) born via emergency cesarean section due to severe maternal preeclampsia with respiratory failure, who presented with severe birth asphyxia (APGAR scores 1/3), profound metabolic acidosis (umbilical cord pH 6.7, base excess -20 mmol/L), and severe encephalopathy (Thompson score 15). Therapeutic hypothermia was initiated within 6 hours of birth and continued for 72 hours, followed by controlled rewarming, with the patient requiring mechanical ventilation for 10 days and hospitalization for 17 days total. The patient demonstrated progressive neurological improvement with Thompson scores decreasing from 15 to 3 over the first four days of treatment, while cerebral regional oxygen saturation remained within normal limits throughout cooling therapy. The infant was successfully weaned from mechanical ventilation, achieved full enteral feeding, and was discharged home without apparent neurological sequelae. This case demonstrates the successful implementation of evidence-based therapeutic hypothermia protocols in severe HIE management, emphasizing that early recognition, appropriate patient selection, precise temperature control, and comprehensive supportive care are critical for optimal outcomes, while long-term neurodevelopmental follow-up remains essential for all HIE survivors.

Abstract

This study investigates the psychological mechanisms underlying trading decisions among novice investors in Indonesia. Drawing upon behavioral finance and Prospect Theory, the research examines the effect of overconfidence on trading decisions, incorporating risk propensity as a mediating variable and financial literacy as a moderating variable. A quantitative explanatory approach was employed using primary data collected through an online survey of 220 novice investors with less than two years of investment experience. The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to test both direct and indirect relationships. The findings reveal that overconfidence has a positive and significant effect on trading decisions. Overconfidence also significantly increases risk propensity, which in turn positively influences trading decisions, indicating partial mediation. Furthermore, financial literacy weakens the positive relationship between overconfidence and trading decisions, suggesting that higher financial knowledge functions as a partial buffer against cognitive bias. This study contributes to the behavioral finance literature by clarifying how cognitive bias translates into actual trading behavior within an emerging market context. The results highlight the importance of strengthening financial literacy and behavioral awareness to improve the quality of investment decision-making among retail investors.

Abstract

Acid mine drainage from former coal mining areas is characterized by low pH and elevated concentrations of dissolved metals and sulfate, which may degrade receiving-water quality and create long-term environmental risk. This study evaluated the effectiveness and applied relevance of a pilot-scale subsurface-flow constructed wetland in improving acid mine drainage quality by increasing pH and reducing iron, manganese, and sulfate. The novelty of the study lies in the integrated use of gravel, sand, limestone, organic support media, and wetland vegetation within a pilot unit designed for post-mining rehabilitation conditions, while assessing pH, Fe, Mn, and sulfate simultaneously as key indicators of treatment performance. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest approach was used by comparing influent and effluent quality after treatment through the wetland media. The influent had a pH of 3.2, Fe of 12.50 mg/L, Mn of 8.20 mg/L, and sulfate of 420.00 mg/L. After treatment, the effluent pH increased to 6.1, while Fe decreased to 3.40 mg/L, Mn to 2.70 mg/L, and sulfate to 180.00 mg/L. The corresponding removal efficiencies were 72.80% for Fe, 67.07% for Mn, and 57.14% for sulfate. These findings indicate that pilot-scale subsurface-flow constructed wetlands can provide a simple, low-energy, and environmentally compatible option for post-mining water management and may support practical rehabilitation strategies where long-term chemical dosing is difficult to sustain.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low ability of students to convey the contents of fairy tales orally in a coherent, clear, and expressive manner. Learning is still dominated by the lecture method and does not actively involve students in speaking activities. The research method used is quantitative with a quasi-experimental approach. The data collection technique was carried out through a speaking skills test which was assessed based on indicators of fluency, mastery of content, intonation, expression, and story structure. Data were analyzed using the t-test and coefficient of determination. The results showed that the average value of students' speaking skills in the experimental class reached 90.88, while in the control class it was only 86.94. The t-test produced a T-value of 2.77> T-table 2.03 (α = 0.05), which indicates that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that there is a significant influence of the application of the demonstration method on students' speaking skills. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient of r = 0.967 with a determination coefficient of R² = 0.935 indicates that 93.5% of the increase in students' speaking skills can be explained by the use of the demonstration method. The demonstration method has proven effective in creating an active, participatory, and enjoyable learning atmosphere. Students look more confident, enthusiastic, and able to convey stories with a logical structure and appropriate expression. The teacher acts as a model and facilitator, so that students gain direct and meaningful learning experiences. This study concludes that the demonstration method has a significant effect on improving students' speaking skills in retelling fairy tales. Therefore, this method is worthy of being used as an innovative alternative learning strategy in Indonesian language subjects in elementary schools

Abstract

Drought stress is one of the abiotic factors that can inhibit plant growth and yield. This study aims to assess the effect of drought stress on the physiological characteristics of pasak bumi (Eurycoma longifolia, Jack). This study used a completely randomized design with two treatments, namely P0 = daily watering (control) and P1 = drought stress for two days. Each treatment consisted of 15 plants; there were 30 sample plants. Parameters observed included chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, photosynthetic rate, and Water Use Efficiency. The results of this study showed that drought stress decreased chlorophyll content (5.81%), stomatal conductance (10.34%), transpiration rate (18.73%), photosynthetic rate (3.78%), and water use efficiency (33.127%) compared to control plants. Eurycoma longifolia Jack exhibits an adaptive physiological response to drought stress, characterized by moderate reductions in chlorophyll content, photosynthesis rate, and stomatal conductance while maintaining efficient photosynthetic activity. Although water use efficiency declined significantly, the findings indicate effective compensatory mechanisms, positioning this species as a potential candidate for cultivation under water-limited conditions.

Abstract

Genetic expansion of plants can be done by crossing between plant genotypes. This research aims to determine the percentage of successful chili crosses using the full diallel method and determine the level of phenotypic diversity resulting from the crosses. This research used five cayenne pepper genotypes, viz. UIN-041, UIN-048, UIN-050, UIN-062, and UIN-063. The crossing of the five genotypes was carried out using the full diallel method. The parameters observed consisted of the percentage of successful crossing, fruit weight, fruit diameter, fruit length, and number of seeds. The data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance and calculation of the phenotypic diversity coefficient for each character. The results of this study showed that the percentage of successful crossing ranged from 15.00 - 43.30%. The highest value was observed in crossing UIN-041 x UIN-050 and the lowest in UIN-062 x UIN-048. The low successful percentage of crossing is influenced by the pollen condition of the male parents and the level of cross-compatibility. The phenotypic variability value of the fruit weight and fruit length characters was 0.48 and 1.50, respectively, and that was classified as narrow variability, while the fruit diameter and fruit number characters were 5.23 and 120.34, respectively, and classified as broad variability.
