Abstract

Misconceptions in fractions, a significant challenge in mathematics education, occur when students' conceptions do not align with scientific conceptions, yet they firmly believe in the correctness of their conceptions. These deeply rooted misconceptions are difficult to eliminate and not easily identified with conventional instruments. Therefore, this study aims to develop a valid and reliable five-tier diagnostic test instrument to identify students' misconceptions about fractions effectively. The design of this development research involves qualitative and quantitative methods using the 4D model (define, design, develop, disseminate). Sixty-eight seventh-grade students were involved in quantitative instrument quality testing; data were analyzed using SPSS. The final result of the development of this instrument was 12 questions declared valid and reliable. Furthermore, the instrument was applied to 30 seventh-grade students in different schools to identify their misconceptions about fractions. Based on the analysis of the combination of students' answers, it was obtained that 36.4% of students understood the concept, 8.9% were in the false positive category, 7.2% were false negative, 9.7% lacked knowledge, and 37.8% had misconceptions. It was found that the most dominant description of misconceptions (33%), namely, students assume that the smaller the denominator of a fraction, the smaller the value of the fraction. Then, it was also found that students' thinking, in general, causes misconceptions to occur. The practical implication of the results of this study is that teachers can use the instrument and identify misconceptions to develop more effective teaching methods, thereby improving mathematics education by helping students avoid and anticipate misconceptions.

Abstract

One of the abilities needed in learning is critical thinking skills. Critical thinking skills are skills that can analyze and evaluate information. Critical thinking skills can relate to the occurrence of misconceptions. This relationship can be positive or negative for students. The research objective is to analyze the relationship between critical thinking skills and misconceptions using a five-tier instrument. The method used in this research is correlational. The sampling technique used simple random sampling, taking 25% of the population of 80 students. The data collection instrument used a questionnaire on critical thinking skills and a misconception test sheet. The descriptive results of misconceptions are 6.00, meaning that misconceptions are categorized as moderate. The descriptive results of critical thinking skills show that the mean of critical thinking skills is 68.50, meaning that critical thinking skills are considered good. Then from the correlation results, there is a significant relationship between the two variables. It means that there is a relationship between critical thinking skills and misconceptions. When misconceptions are high, students' critical thinking skills will be low. Conversely, if the misconceptions experienced by students are low, the critical thinking skills possessed by students are high.

Abstract

Currently, the measurement and assessment process that uses paper is considered less effective and less efficient because it is relatively difficult to score, takes longer, and does not save paper. Therefore, web-based assessment is a better choice in some instances and conditions. The purpose of this study was to develop a web-based assessment that will be used to identify students' misconceptions about the buoyant material. This research is development research (R&D) using the ADDIE model, which involved two validators, a teacher, and 20 students, as respondents in the development process. Data collection was carried out using instruments and interviews. The implication in this study is to be able to identify the occurrence of misconceptions experienced by students by involving technology in conducting assessments carried out by teachers. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Miles and Huberman analysis. The study results indicate that in the use of web-based assessment, students get an average percentage of misconceptions <20%, which is included in the SR category (very low). User response to this web-based instrument is good, so it is feasible. With this, it can be said that it is necessary to apply web-based assessment in the process of tests and assessments in schools.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a learning model that can foster science literacy skills by involving ‘the ability to think critically, think creatively, and collaborate skills. Three research questions were asked: i) how to develop learning models to cultivate skills (science literacy, critical thinking, creative thinking, and collaboration); ii) how to validate it; and iii) how critical thinking, creative, and collaboration skills affect science literacy skills. This research uses analysis, design, development, implementation dan evaluation (ADDIE) development design by using validation sheets as data collection instruments: three learning model experts and two lecturers who teach introductory physics courses as practitioners participated in this research. The collected data is analyzed using V-Aiken to determine the level of validity. Overall, the validation results from model development are in the “meet requirements” and “feasible” categories for implementation. The analysis results of the relationship of research variables show that critical thinking, creative thinking, and collaboration directly affect science literacy skills; however, critical thinking and creative thinking skills have a moderate effect on science literacy skills if collaboration skills act as mediation.

Abstract

Students' negative attitude is a problem that interferes with the science learning process in public and private schools. Students' negative attitude in learning science is a complex problem to solve. The negative attitude shown is that students are disobedient when given assignments and dislike them. It will have an impact on low student learning outcomes. This study aims to determine students' attitudes towards science subjects by comparing private and public schools. The type of research used is a descriptive mixed method. The instrument of this type of quantitative research is in the form of a questionnaire, while the qualitative instrument is an interview sheet for students and teachers of science subjects. The number of samples was 236 students using the purposive sampling technique, while the qualitative samples were eight students and two science teachers. The quantitative analysis technique used is descriptive statistics, and the qualitative analysis technique summarizes the results of the interviews. The result is that students' attitudes towards science subjects in public and private junior high schools are already promising. Based on student attitudes, public schools are categorized as having slightly better attitudes than private schools. The results of interviews with students and teachers can also be revealed that most students have positive attitudes towards science, students who are not positive with actions such as teachers, are active alone when learning activities take place, disturb friends, etc. are at least harmful. Attitudes must be changed in students. The results show that public junior high school students have slightly more positive attitudes than private students.

Abstract

Attitude measurement is very important because the teacher can find out that each student responds to science learning with an indication that students reject or accept science learning in students. This research is aimed to analyse how the science attitude of students, analyse understanding of students' concepts on Newton's law material and analyse the effect of science attitudes on students' understanding of concepts in Newton's law material. This research is a mixed type of research, namely a mixed method with the aim of knowing how science attitudes are, how students understand concepts, and the effect of science attitudes on students' conceptual understanding. This study took a sample of 358 junior high school students with the sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The instruments used were student science attitude questionnaires, concept understanding questionnaires, and interview sheets. Analysis of the data used in the form of descriptive statistics, simple linear regression, and Miles Huberman for qualitative data. The results obtained from the study are that the overall average of students is in a good category on both variables, it is also known that there is an influence of 51.2% of the influence of students' science attitudes on students' understanding of concepts. This certainly illustrates that junior high school students in the Telaipura sub-district are quite good at understanding Newton's law concepts.
