Abstract

Mathematics learning is associated with 21st-century skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking in problem-solving, creativity, and innovation. To help students obtain these skills, a learning project was developed through Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI) approach by using fruit salad recipes and collaborative learning based on the Lesson Study for Learning Community (LSLC) system. The primary purpose of this study was to develop fruit salad recipes to assist junior high school students in solving problems using mean, social arithmetic, and data presentation. It employed design research type validation studies using photos, fruit salad products, and document reviews as data collection techniques. The research subjects were 27 students of grade 8 from a junior high school in Palembang. This study resulted in a learning trajectory consisting of two activities and post-test questions. In the first activity, the students can analyze and solve problems in planning fruit salad recipes with material averaging, social arithmetic, and data presentation. In the second activity, the students can make fruit salads and write recipes based on skills to make fruit salad products. The results of this study demonstrate that in project-based learning through PMRI with the context of fruit salad recipes and the LSLC system, students can learn collaboratively. The learning helps them solve problems by using average material, social arithmetic, and data presentation in developing fruit salad recipes.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the progress of students' learning on multiplication fractions with natural numbers through the five activity levels based on Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach proposed by Streefland. Design research was chosen to achieve this research goal. In design research, the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) plays important role as a design and research instrument. This HLT tested to thirty-seven students of grade five primary school (i.e.SDN 179 Palembang). The result of the classroom practices showed that measurement (length) activity could stimulate students’ to produce fractions as the first level in learning multiplication of fractions with natural numbers. Furthermore, strategies and tools used by the students in partitioning gradually be developed into a more formal mathematics in which number line be used as the model of measuring situation and the model for more formal reasoning. The number line then could bring the students to the last activity level, namely on the way to rules for multiplying fractions with natural numbers. Based on this findings, it is suggested that Streefland's five activity levels can be used as a guideline in learning multiplication of fractions with natural numbers in which the learning process become a more progressive learning. Keywords: multiplication fractions with natural numbers, measurement (length) activity, design research, Hypothetical Learning Trajectory, model of, model for

Abstract

The chart of Indonesian student of mathematical ability development in Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) event during the last 4 periods shows an unstable movement. PISA aims to examine the ability of children aged 15 years in reading literacy, mathematics literacy, and science literacy. The concept of mathematical literacy is closely related to several other concepts discussed in mathematics education. The most important is mathematical modelling and its component processes. Therefore the goal of this research is to investigate secondary school students' difficulties in modeling problems PISA-model level 5 and 6. Qualitative research was used as an appropriate mean to achieve this research goal. This type of research is a greater emphasizing on holistic description, and phenomenon identified to be studied, students' difficulties in modelling real world problem in PISA model question level 5 and 6. 26 grade 9 students of SMPN 1Palembang, 26 grade 9 students of SMPK Frater Xaverius 1 Palembang, and 31 participants of mathematical literacy context event, were involved in this research. The result of investigate showed that student is difficult to; (1) formulating situations mathematically, Such as to representing a situation mathematically, recognizing mathematical structure (including regularities, relationships, and patterns) in problems, (2) evaluating the reasonableness of a mathematical solution in the context of a real-world problem. The students have no problem in solve mathematical problem they have constructed.

Abstract

Mathematical learning not only produces students who succeed in mathematical and procedural calculations but also develops religious thinking. Realistic mathematics education with the context of Islamic values makes students can imagine, which is one of the right ways to develop the skills of students’ creativity, collaboration, and communication. This study aims to describe the learning trajectory that can help students understand integers with a realistic mathematics education approach based on Islamic values. It is hoped that student responses are positive, meaningful, and enjoyable. This research uses the design research method, which is a form of a qualitative approach. There are three stages in this research, namely: preliminary design, experimental design, and retrospective analysis. The results showed that the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) trial with an Islamic value-based context showed significant progress based on student responses. Initially, students had difficulty understanding integers, but they felt delighted to follow the learning process along with the habituation. The HLT technique used in habituation was through pilot experiments, followed by teaching experiments. Students respond very positively and are happy to follow it by seeing the very significant development of their abilities during the learning process.

Abstract

Project-based learning (PjBL) is an appropriate learning model that can shape students’ scientific, social and higher-order thinking. Implementing PjBL in education gives students the freedom to plan their own learning activities, conduct projects collaboratively and produce products. In a healthy menu project, PjBL can help students calculate their excess weight. The purpose of this study was thus to design a healthy menu that assists Indonesian junior high school students solve numeracy problems using obesity context. The method followed a design research type validation studies using observation and document reviews as data collection techniques. This study produced a learning trajectory that can help grade VII students solve arithmetic operations using obesity context through two activities. In the first, the students were asked to record their respective heights and weights, then use them to determine their body mass index (BMI) and body mass ratio (BMR). Then, the students confirmed their necessary daily caloric intake, and categorized their BMI and BMR results as underweight, normal, overweight or obese. In the second activity, the students developed healthy menus per their respective tastes based on their weight categories from the first activity. The study concluded with the students successfully producing healthy menus that they designed according to their calculated required daily caloric intake.

Abstract

Knowing number facts up to 10 become crucial if we want students to solve addition and subtraction problems  using more abbreviated strategies. Otherwise, students will keep counting one-by-one until they get an answer. One of important number facts is number pairs that make ten because it is an important ‘benchmark’ that students will refer to constantly. Considering the important of number facts up to 10, we designed a parrot game activity to supports students learning process. We designed an instructional activity based on Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. We tried this instructional activity with twenty seven first grade students in SDN 179 Palembang. As a result, we found that many first grade students were able to know number facts up to 10, but they still need models to support their thinking. Keywords: number facts up to 10, number pairs that make 10, and parrot game. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.2.2.776.163-172

Abstract

In guiding students to construct a mathematical concept themselves, learning process should be started by a context which is suit with the concept. In this research, we focused on structured arrangement which was believed to be able to support students ages 8 – 9 years old developing splitting strategy in doing multiplication. This study was a design research underlined by tenets of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). The result show that giving structured objects, recognizing number relation in multiplication, and maintaining flexible calculation have important roles in supporting the development of mental calculation achieving splitting level.Key words: design research, mental calculation, splitting level, structured arrangement DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.2.2.748.199-214

Abstract

This study aimed to describe and compare the students’ fluency, flexibility, and originality in solving non-routine problems in the Palembang context. They were depicted from the student’s fluency, flexibility, and originality of solving the horizontal and vertical mathematization forms. This qualitative study employed. The subjects of this study were 30 students of grade nine of junior high schools in Palembang. The instruments used were tests and interviews. The tests were employed to investigate the written horizontal and vertical mathematizations forms. Meanwhile, the interviews were to explore the students’ ideas with inadequately detailed answers. Then, the test and interview data were reduced and grouped based on the indicators of creativity. The reduced data were presented in a descriptive form for conclusions. The results of the data analysis showed that the high-ability students were the most fluent and flexible in solving the problems. Still, the provided solutions were less original and tended to use formal mathematics in the forms of formulas, symbols, and operations. Meanwhile, the moderate-ability students tended to start to solve problems by simplifying them, then presenting them in visual images. The answer sheets of the moderate-ability students revealed their fluency in understanding the problems and solutions, flexibility, and originality of thinking. This study obtained different results from the low-ability students who tended to have difficulties understanding the problems and made many errors in solving them.  Such a condition showed their inability to write the known data and relate the data to other facts they had already learned. As a result, their answers did not represent fluency, flexibility, and originality.
