Abstract

In the 21st century, students from all levels of education face extreme global competition, technology that is driven by information, and rapid media-saturation. These dramatic accelerational challenges are the reason why the educational system must prepare students with the skills needed in the era of globalization. Based on a document published by The Board of National Education Standards in 2010 on the importance of establishing a framework for 21st-century education in Indonesia, the necessity of appropriate standards has become very important to the current educational system. This paper aims to discuss conceptual frameworks for prospective science teachers in Indonesia. Using an extensive literature review of three document (P21, enGauge-21CS, and ATC21S) and group discussion with a two-round Delphi study, we have constructed the Indonesian Partnership for 21st-Century Skills Standards (IP-21CSS) based on an agreement between 15 panelists. From the results of this study, we have established four IP-21CSS that were perceived by panelists as appropriate standards for prospective science teachers in Indonesia ranging from 4.5 to 5 or in the high level. These standards include: (1) 4Cs (critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, and communication); (2) ICTs (technology, media, and information literacy); (3) spiritual values (religious beliefs and spiritual awareness); and (4) character building (teachers’ attitudes and scientific attitudes). Therefore, it concludes that the implementation of 21st-century education learning that emphasizes each IP-21CSS indicator needs to be considered as an essential component in the courses process for prospective science teachers in Indonesia.

Abstract

Based on the need’s analysis done, the empowerment of higher-order cognitive skills of the students in Surakarta was not optimal yet. This research addressed to determine and describe the feasibility of biology module which was arranged based on Stimulating Higher-Order Thinking Skills (Stim-HOTS) model. This Research and Development (R&D) involved six expert validators, including material validator, module development validator, language validator, learning instrument validator, and school practitioners. The results showed that the percentages of the module feasibility were between 83% and 98% which were categorized as very good. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be implied that the Stim-HOTS-based module can be used as learning resource.

Abstract

Thematic learning is considered as efficient as the students taught learn in coherent context and holistic way, as well as associate the concepts they learnt with their surrounding and real-life examples. The aim of the study was to identify the effectiveness of the problem-based thematic learning module prototype to improve students' critical thinking skills. This research and development were conducted based on Borg and Gall model. The module effectiveness was tested using pre-experimental design. The sampling technique used was cluster random sample which employed as many as 33 students in which the data collection technique used was test. The data gained was analyzed using paired sample t-test. The results showed that the students’ post-test score of critical thinking skills were significantly differed from their pre-test score. Therefore, the developed module can improve student critical thinking skills effectively. Moreover, it is suggested that teacher should apply a mixed method of teaching as it helps to strengthen students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This research aimed: 1) to develop an inquiry-based laboratory module, 2) to test the feasibility of an inquiry-based laboratory module, and 3) to test the effectiveness of an inquiry-based laboratory module to improve students’ outcomes on motion system material at class XI of State Senior High School (SMAN) 1 of Mejayan. The development of an inquiry-based laboratory module referred to nine steps of Research and Development (R&D) model from Borg & Gall (1983) that included: 1) research and data collection, 2) planning, 3) product development, 4) initial product test, 5) product revision I, 6) field test, 7) product revision II, 8) operational field test, 9) final product revision. The research results showed: 1) the developed inquiry-based laboratory module on motion system material used the Inquiry Lab syntax (observation, manipulation, generalization, verification, and application), 2) the feasibility of an inquiry-based laboratory module as followed: a) the validation test of material expert at 93.00%, b) the validation of design development expert at 82.90%, c) the validation of tool expert at 95.70%, d) the validation of practitioners (teachers) at 94.00%, and e) the test of small group at 83.82%; and 3) an inquiry-based laboratory module on motion system material was effective to improve students’ outcomes (Sig.=0.000 < a=0.05).
