Abstract

Abstract:  The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness and evaluate how effective the use of QAR (Question and Answer Relationship) on improving the students' reading comprehension, especially on the Descriptive Text. In this study, the authors used a Class Action Research, while for collecting the data, the authors use the observation notes and some written test instruments to measure student progress. The results of the data analysis and observation notes, found that the effect of the QAR (Question and Answer Relationship) are influence at the level of students' understanding in  descriptive reading text, the  students were able to answer the question by searching the  information in text, and increasing their  motivation and most of student are interest in the subject English Basically, the student increasing in this study is varied, if we look at the graph of value increasing, perhaps only a few are able to improve his abilities, but on the other hand, the growing and respect for the English class is quite an increase, to cultivate a sense of curiosity towards English had already made his own pride for researchers.Keywords: QAR (Question and Answer Relationship), Reading Comprehension, Descriptive Text Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui keefektifan dan mengevaluasi seberapa efektifnya penggunaan QAR (Question and Answer Relationship) pada peningkatan pemahaman membaca siswa khususnya pada jenis Text Descriptive. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas sedeangkan untuk menggumpulkan data, penulis menggunakan catatan obervasi dan beberapa intrumen test tertulis untuk mengukur kemajuan siswa. Hasil dari data analisis dan catatan observasi, penulis menemukan bahwa efek dari QAR (Question and Answer Relationship) berpengarauh pada tingkat pemahaman siswa terhadap text bacaan descriptive, siswa mampu menjawab pertanyaan dengan mencari informasi yang ada dalam text,  dan meningkatnya motifasi dan minat siswa pada pelajaran bahasa inggris. Pada dasarnya peningkatan siswa pada penelitian ini beragam , jika kita melihat dari grafik peningkatan nilai, mungkin hanya sedikit yang mampu meningkatkan kemampuannya, namun disisi lain , meningkatnya semangat dan penghargaan terhadap pelajaran bahasa inggris ini cukup meningkat, untuk menumbuh kan rasa keingintahuan mereka terhadap bahasa inggris sudah membuat kebanggaan sendiri bagi peneliti.Keywords:  QAR (Question and Answer Relationship), Pemahaman Membaca, Text Deskriptif

Abstract

Abstract: Oral participation is essentially important in English classroom. The writer observed and found that the students of English Education Study Program, Tanjungpura University, tended to be reticent when classroom discussion occured. They chose to remain silent rather than participating actively in the discussion. This study aimed to investigate the reasons for students’ reticence in English classroom using case study method. The participants were 10 students of the 2nd semester students. The participants were chosen by the characteristics of reticence such as tending to be reluctant in responding lecturers’ or other students’ questions, sitting at the middle/back rows, and rarely asking questions (rarely raising hand). Using direct observation and semi-structured interview, the study found that the main reasons of students’ reticence were anxiety, shyness, unfamiliarity with the topics/materials, low English proficiency, fear of making mistakes, lacking confidence in oneself, and being underprepared. Based on the findings, it showed that affective, individual, and psychological factors had a great influence on students’ reticence. Keywords : Students’ Reticence, Reasons, English Education Abstrak: Partisipasi secara lisan sangat penting di kelas bahasa Inggris. Penulis mengamati and menemukan bahwa mahasiswa dari program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris, universitas Tanjungpura, cenderung bersikap diam ketika diskusi kelas berlangsung. Mereka memilih untuk tetap diam daripada berkonstribusi di kelas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi alasan-alasan mahasiswa menjadi bersikap diam di kelas bahasa Inggris menggunakan metode studi kasus. Peserta dari penelitian ini adalah 10 mahasiswa semester dua. Peserta ini dipilih berdasarkan kararteristik dari sikap diam yaitu cenderung menolak dalam merespon pertanyaan dosen atau mahasiswa yang lain, duduk di barisan tengah atau belakang, dan jarang bertanya (jarang mengangkat tangan). Dengan menggunakan pengamatan langsung dan interview semi-struktur, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa alasan utama mahasiswa bersikap pendiam adalah cemas, malu, tidak terbiasa dengan topik/materi, kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang rendah, takut salah, kurang percaya diri, dan kurang persiapan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat terlihat bahwa faktor afektif, faktor individual, dan faktor psikologi sangat mempengaruhi sikap diam mahasiswa. Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this research is to investigate how well is the ability of  the Third Semester  Regular A Students of the English Education Study Program in Academic Year 2012/2013 in pronouncing voiced and voiceless consonants. Method of this research is descriptive study by holding three time of test using minimal pairs. Subject of this research is all of the Third Semester  Regular A Students of the English Education Study Program in Academic Year 2012/2013. Data of the research was collected by using pronouncing practice oral test of minimal pairs. Result of this research is the main score of students’ pronouncing ability at the first test was 91.37, the second test was 89.40 and the last test was 91.48 which was categorized as good to excellent. The result of the students’ mean score had shown their significant ability in pronouncing English voiced and voiceless consonants. Abstrak : Tujuan dari Penelitian ini adalah untuk mennyelidiki seberapa baik kemampuan mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Reguler A semester ketiga tahun pelajaran 2012/2013 dalam melafalkan konsonan voiced dan voiceless Bahasa Inggris menggunakan minimal pairs. Metode penelitian ini adalah studi deskriptif dengan melakukan tiga kali test menggunakan minimal pairs. Subjek penelitian adalah seluruh mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Reguler A Semester ketiga tahun pelajaran 2012/2013. Data penelitian didapatkan dengan menggunakan test lisan praktek pelafalan minimal pairs. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah nilai rata-rata yang diperoleh mahasiswa pada test pertama adalah 91,37, test kedua 89,40 dan test terakhir 91,48 yang dikategorikan baik sampai dengan luar biasa. Hasil nilai rata-rata mahasiswa ini telah menunjukkan kemampuan signifikan mereka dalam melafalkan  konsonan voiced dan voiceless Bahasa Inggris. Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this research was to improve reading comprehension in narrative texts to the ninth grader at SMPN 1 Singkawang. The researcher applied four strategies taken from Westwood: carefully viewing and overviewing what to be read, self questioning, selectively reading and summarizing. These strategies were implemented through three sequences; pre-viewing, while viewing and post viewing. The study showed that the use of video subtitles gave positive implication which effected on learning improvement. A set of sequences in video subtitles assisted the students in understanding the text, interpreting words, and improve their vocabularies. The students’ attitude towards their reading comprehension have improved, which was shown engaged actively during the learning process and their responses towards the strategy used. Moreover, the students also improved their score. Thus, it indicated that the learning process have run well and have increased individual performance. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to solve students? problem in improving listening comprehension, particularly their ability in comprehending specific information and identifying words from listening materials. Moreover, this research is intended to find out how does biography movie can improve the listening comprehension to the year eleven students of SMA Mujahidin Pontianak in academic year 2012 ? 2013. The method used in this research is classroom action research in which the researcher concerned with the improvement of students? listening comprehension in every meeting. This research was conducted in three cycles which consist of one meeting each. In collecting the data, the researcher used achievement test, field notes and observation sheets. The performance test which was used in this research was kind of listening test. The researcher then used scoring rubric to score the students? achievement in listening test. The observation sheets were used to collect qualitative data which was everything happened in teaching and learning process. The improvement of students? listening comprehension could be seen from the result of every meeting. Lebih lanjut, riset ini ditujukan untuk mengetahui bagaimana kisah biografi dapat meningkatkan pemahaman mendengarkan terhadap siswa kelas sebelas di SMA Mujahidin Pontianak tahun ajaran 2012 ? 2013. Metode yang digunakan di dalam riset ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas dimana fokus peneliti di sini yaitu peningkatan pemahaman mendengarkan siswa pada setiap pertemuan. Riset ini telah dilaksanakan dalam tiga tahap terdiri dari satu pertemuan di setiap tahap. Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan achievement test, lembar catatan dan lembar observasi. Tes kinerja yang digunakan di dalam riset ini adalah tes mendengarkan. Peneliti kemudian menggunakan rubrik penilaian untuk menilai pencapaian siswa dalam tes mendengarkan. Lembar observasi digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data kualitatif yang terjadi selama proses belajar mengajar. Abstract

Abstract: The researcher conducted this research to the fourth semester students of English Study Program at FKIP Tanjungpura University Pontianak. The research purposes were to find out how the students perform their matter and manner in the online discussion forum and how the process of students perform their argumentations from the first to the last by using voice chat. This research was pre-experimental study. Using purposive random sampling technique and 22 students of fourth semester English Study Program were taken as the sample. Students? voice recorder and transcript were the tool of data collection. The average score of the first performance was 61,68 and the last performance was 70,63. As the result, the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the Null Hypothesis was rejected. It means that the use of voice chat to develop students? skills in online debate and discussion is significantly. The process of online discussion by using voice chat had successfully because the students? scores move from average to good category. Besides, it had successfully driven students from conventional learning to blended learning.   Key Words: Voice Chat, Online Discussion Forum, Academic Debate. Abstrak: Peneliti melaksanakan penelitian ini kepada mahasiswa semester empat program Studi Bahasa Inggris di FKIP Universitas Tanjungpura Pontianak. Tujuannya adalah untuk menemukan bagaimana mahasiswa menampilkan materi dan sikap di dalam forum diskusi online dan bagaimana proses dari mahasiswa menampilkan argumentasi dari awal hingga akhir penampilan dengan menggunakan voice chat. Penelitian ini adalah studi pra-experimen. Dua puluh dua siswa dari mahasiswa semester empat dipilih sebagai sampel. Perekaman suara siswa dan transkrip adalah alat dari pengumpulan data. Nilai rata-rata pada awal adalah 61,68 dan akhir penampilan adalah 70,63. Hipotesa alternative di terima dan Null hipotesa di tolak. Ini berarti bahwa penggunaan voice chat telah berhasil mengembangkan kemampuan siswa di debat secara online dan diskusi. Selain itu, proses dari online diskusi menggunakan voice chat sudah berhasil mengarahkan siswa dari conventional learning dan blended learning.   Kata Kunci: Voice Chat, Forum Diskusi Online, Debat Akademis.

Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate the rural students’ attitude towards English language learning in term of affective, behavioral and cognitive aspect. In order to collect data, a language questionnaire was designed with thirty closed questions. The questions were put in Likert Scale and focused on the repertory grid technique for studying attitudes towards school subject. The grid was interest, difficulty, freedom of expressing idea and social benefit that connected with three aspects of attitude. The study took place at one of rurals School in Paloh, Sambas regency. The participants were fifty-five students from grade tenth and eleventh at SMAN 2 Paloh. This study was conducted using a survey method. In the end of the study, the collected data analyzed by using formulas designed for attitude. Based on the calculation, the mean score for the affective aspect was reached 76.25%, behavioral was 60.76% and cognitive was 67.82%. Based on the interpretation score, the students’ result ranked positive. In conclusion, the rural students’ of SMAN 2 Paloh have positive attitude towards English language learning in term of affective, behavioral, and cognitive aspects. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to design teaching material to help students in learning vocabulary with anti-corruption topic in supporting character education to students in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak academic year 2015/2016. The completed research was implemented to the first semester of eleventh students in SMA Muhamadiyah 1 Pontianak. There were 30 students who actively involved in this research. The method of this research was development research which consisted of four phases: analyze, design, develop, and implement or called ADDI. The result of the research is a design of teaching material comic to help students in learning vocabulary with anti-corruption topic in supporting their character education. The comic was used for one class meeting on Giving Suggestion topic. On the implementation, based on the observation and feedbacks both from the students and the teacher, it was found that anti-corruption comic was usable for students in learning vocabulary to support their character education of anti-corruption on Giving Suggestion topic.   Key words: Development Research, Vocabulary, Anti-Corruption, Comic Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk merancang bahan ajar untuk membantu siswa dalam mempelajari kosa kata yang berhubungan dengan topik anti-korupsi dalam rangka pendidikan karakter kepada siswa-siswi di SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak tahun ajaran 2015/2016. Penelitian ini diimplementasikan kepada siswa-siswi kelas sebelas di SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak. Terdapat 30 siswa-siswi yang terlibat aktif dalam penelitian ini. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian pengembangan yang terdiri dari empat tahapan: analisis, desain, pengembangan, dan implementasi atau disebut ADDI. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah rancangan materi pembelajaran yang digunakan untuk membantu siswa-siswi dalam mempelajari kosa kata yang berhubungan dengan topic anti-korupsi dalam rangka membantu pendidikan karakter mereka. Materi ajar komik digunakan di dalam satu pertemuan belajar dalam topic Giving Suggestion. Pada tahap implementsi, berdasarkan observasi dan umpan balik baik oleh siswa-siswi maupun guru, didapati bahwa komik anti-korupsi dapat digunakan bagi siswa dalam mempelajari kosa kata untuk membantu pendidikan karakter anti-korupsi pada topic Giving Suggestion Kata Kunci: Penelitian Pengembangan, Kosa Kata, Anti-Korupsi, Komik

Abstract

Abstract: This study was to find out the extent to which task-based language teaching is applicable and influenced classroom practices and students? performance. The study recorded the implementation of task-based language teaching in order to find the improvement in the teaching learning process, including students? improvement in speaking skills. The data were gathered from classroom observations and interview. The analysis showed how TBLT framework gave an improvement in teaching learning process. It provided exposures, opportunities to use the language, and prudence feedback as well as motivation to help the teacher managing classroom interaction and maximizing opportunities for students to put their limited language to genuine use. It also enabled the students to experience the language; they made noticeable progress in their language learning, gaining the confidence to express themselves more fluently in speaking. In short, this study showed that has TBLT promoted students active participation in the activities with more opportunities to display their thinking through action which in turn increased their positive attitude for language learning. Key words: Task-Based Language Teaching, exposure, speaking.    Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui sejauh mana pengajaran bahasa berbasis tugas dapat mempengaruhi proses belajar mengajar dan kinerja siswa. Data diperoleh dari observasi kelas dan wawancara. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa penerapan TBLT memberikan perbaikan dalam proses belajar mengajar. Adanya eksposur, kesempatan untuk menggunakan bahasa, dan umpan balik serta motivasi dapat membantu guru mengelola interaksi kelas dan memaksimalkan kesempatan bagi siswa untuk bereksperimen dengan bahasa. Hal ini juga memungkinkan siswa untuk lebih percaya diri sehingga dapat mengekspresikan diri lebih lancar dalam berbicara. Singkatnya, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pengajaran bahasa berbasis tugas dapat menumbuhkan partisipasi aktif siswa dalam kegiatan dengan belajar dan meningkatkan sikap positif mereka untuk belajar bahasa. AbstractThe purpose of this research was to design teaching material to support students in learning of narrative text reading with the local folklore comic. The researcher took the folklore from West Kalimantan story book collection. The method of this research was a development research. In conducting this research, the researcher used ADDIE approach (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluation). The first three phases were the phases that the researcher used in doing the research. To design the product, the researcher first analyzed the students and teacher condition and also their problems and needs toward English teaching and learning process. After that the researcher selected and collected the interesting materials then started to make a comic. Futhermore, the researcher asked two experts to validate the comic whether it was appropriate or not to support the teaching and learning process of narrative text reading by using an assessment rubric. The result shows that the product was classified as Very Good with the score of percentage 93%. It meant that the comic can be used to support teaching and learning narrative text reading. Keywords: Development Research, Comic, Narrative text, Reading.
