Abstract

Abstrak: Studi dengan metode deskriptif ini bertujuan untuk meneliti keterlibatan kognitif mahasiswa dari program studi Bahasa Inggris dalam berpartisipasi pada diskusi online di kelas TL-ICT I B. Data berasal dari transkrip komentar mahasiswa di dalam forum online. Murid-murid berkontribusi pada diskusi online dalam beberapa tingkatan kognitif yang akan mengarah kepada dua tingkatan terbesar yaitu keterlibatan kognitif tingkat tinggi dan keterlibatan kognitif tingkat rendah. Keterlibatan kognitif tingkat tinggi akan membawa mereka kepada pengolahan informasi yang lebih dalam seperti penjabaran konsep ataupun debat. Sedangkan keterlibatan kognitif tingkat rendah merupakan pengolahan informasi secara sangat sederhana. Analisis konten dilakukan pada enam episod diskusi yang digunakan sebagai sampel. Dalam analisis ini terdapat lima kategori seperti kategori pertanyaan, pernyataan yang terbagi menjadi enam tipe yang berbeda berdasarkan taksonomi Bloom, kategori refleksi, mentor, dan skafold. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa mayoritas mahasiswa berkontribusi dengan keterlibatan kognitif tingkat rendah, hanya pemikiran sederhana dengan sedikit pemahaman terhadap topik yang didiskusikan. Ini dibuktikan dari pengklasifikasian komentar mahasiswa yang terpusat pada kategori pernyataan tipe I (Responding) dan kategori pernyataan tingkat II (Informative). Kata Kunci: Diskusi online, Keterlibatan Kognitif Abstract: This descriptive study aims to investigate the cognitive engagement of English students in asynchronous online discussion of class TL-ICT I B. The data were derived from transcripts of students postings. Students contributed in online discussions in some levels of cognitive that lead to two broad levels engagement namely high level of cognitive engagement and lower level of cognitive engagement. High level of cognitive engagement will lead to deeper levels of information processing which are associated with elaborating concepts and debating or negotiating meaning. In the contrary, the low level of cognitive engagement refers to surface level of information proccessing. Using a coding rubric, The Analytical Framework for Cognitive Engagement in Discussion, content analysis was conducted on six episodes of the discussions as sample. This rubric consists of five categories such as question, statements divided into six different types based on Taxonomy Bloom, reflection, mentoring, and scaffolding. The findings showed that majority of students engaged with lower level of cognitive engagement, merely superficial thinking with a little understanding toward the issues. It was evidenced in the findings that contributions exhibited by the students centered on statement type I (Responding) and statement type II (Informative). Abstract

Abstract:This research entitled analysis on reading-based researches conducted in english education study program. The purpose of this research is to investigate reseachers’ interest on reading skill in thesis writing. The subjects of research are the theses written on reading interest by English Education Study Program during the period 2006-2011.The research data are taken from UPT PerpustakaanTanjungpura University. The data were analyzed by descriptive study by classified into several categories of interest: Method of Research, Research Focus, Research venue.As the result, mostly theses used Pre-experimental Study. It was 71,74% of the samples while Classroom Action Research and Descriptive Study are 19,56% and 8,70%. According to the research focus: teaching technique is 78,26 %, teaching media is 17,39% and unclassified 4,35%.  Researchers’ interest based on venue of study; Elementary School (4,35%), Junior High School (36,96%), Senior High School (52,17%) and University (6,52%). Subjek penelitian adalah tesis yang ditulis dalam ketertarikan kemampuan membaca oleh Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris selama periode 2006-2011. Data penelitian ini diambil dari UPT Perpustakaan Universitas Tanjungpura.Data penelitian dianalisismenggunakan studi deskripsi dengan mengklasifikasikan ke dalam beberapa kategori ketertarikan; Metode Penelitian, Fokus Penelitian dan Tempat Penelitian. Sebagai hasilnya, sebagian besar tesis menggunakan Studi Pra-eksperimen. Studi ini mencapai 71,74% dari seluruh subjek penelitian. Sementara Penelitian Tindakan dan Studi Deskripsi adalah 19,56% dan 8,70%. Berdasarkan Fokus Penelitian; Teknik Pembelajaran 78,26%, Media Pembelajaran 17,39 % dan bukan Keduanya 4,35 %. Ketertarikan terhadap Tempat Penelitian; Sekolah Dasar (4,35 %), Sekolah Menengah Pertama (36,96%), Sekolah Menengah Atas (52,17%) and Universitas(6,52%). Abstract

The research purpose is to provide feedback about the test quality from a local context that leads to the improvement of National English Examination in Indonesia. Simple random sampling is applied to obtain 1 packet of test items out of 42 packets. Next, the sample of participants as the examinees, 3 junior high schools, is obtained through stratified purposive sampling based on the school accreditation ranks. Lastly, for the sample as the content validity analysts, 3 English subject teachers are purposively selected based on the set criteria. The findings show that the test has fulfilled the criteria of having content validity. However, the test score reliability coefficient calculated with KR-21 is .65 which is categorised unreliable. The test developers need to consider revising items with very low or very high item difficulty and very low item discrimination. Finally, a further action needs to be taken to revise the implausible distractors. Keywords: National English Examination, validity, reliability, item difficulty, item discrimination, distractor   Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menghasilkan umpan balik tentang kualitas tes dari konteks lokal yang mengarah kepada peningkatan kualitas Ujian Nasional Bahasa Inggris di Indonesia. Simple random sampling digunakan untuk mendapatkan 1 dari 42 paket soal ujian. Selanjutnya, sampel peserta ujian diperoleh melalui stratified purposive sampling berdasarkan peringkat akreditasi sekolah. Kemudian, untuk sampel analis validitas isi, 3 orang guru bahasa Inggris terpilih menurut tujuan berdasarkan kriteria yang ditentukan. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa tes tersebut memiliki validitas isi. Tetapi nilai reliabilitas yang dihitung menggunakan KR-21 adalah 0,65 sehingga dikategorikan tidak memiliki reliabilitas. Para pengembang tes perlu mempertimbangkan revisi butir soal dengan tingkat kesukaran yang sangat rendah atau sangat tinggi dan butir soal dengan daya pembeda yang sangat rendah. Akhirnya, tindak lanjut perlu diambil untuk merevisi pengecoh yang tidak berfungi dengan baik. Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi penggunaan sebuah grup di Facebook yang bernama MAN XI IPA 1 English Club dan masalah yang dihadapi dalam penggunaannya sebagai media pendukung pembelajaran mandiri pada pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI IPA 1 di MAN 1 Sintang. Dalam peneltian ini, penulis menggunakan metode studi kasus. Data dikumpulkan melalui angket dan wawancara. Data menunjukkan bahwa siswa melalui proses perencanaan (79,32%), penerapan (81,58%), dan evaluasi (78,41%) pembelajaran mandiri. Siswa mengadapi sedikit masalah pada penggunaan sumber belajar (38,26%), sedikit masalah pada perubahan strategi belajar (34,66%), alasan berpartisipasi dalam grup (42,05%) menjadi masalah utama yang mereka hadapi dimana mereka berpartisipasi sebatas yang diharuskan guru, dan sangat sedikit masalah pada konteks pembelajaran online (14,77%). Kata kunci: Pembelajaran mandiri, Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, pembelajaran online, Facebook Abstract: This research aims to investigate senior high school students use of facebook group named MAN XI IPA 1 English Club along with problems encountered while using the group as a media supporting English self-directed learning (SDL). The subject of this research were the students of XI IPA 1, MAN 1 Sintang. In this case study case study, the data were obtained from the questionnaire and interview. The data shows that the students went through the process of SDL including planning (79.32%) , implementation (81.58%), and evaluation (78.41%). This study reveals that the students experienced few problem in resource use (38.26%), problem in adjusting new teaching and learning strategies (34.66%), and problems in online contexts (14.77%). Meanwhile, the students problems in the motive of participating in the group (42.05%) was the major problem where the students only participate because of the course requirement. Abstract

Abstrak : Siswa kelas VIII A SMP Yakhalusti Pontianak mempunyai kesulitan dalam mengikuti pelajaran Bahasa Inggris, terutama dalam aspek berbicara. Oleh karena itu, digunakan teknik role-play untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara, dalam hal penggunaan ungkapan meminta, memberi, dan menolak atau mengingkari pendapat. Metoda penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas yang diterapkan pada 40 siswa kelas VIII A SMP Yakhalusti Pontianak. Pengumpulan data menggunakan tabel observasi dan field note. Pengumpulan data juga dilengkapi dengan tes penampilan siswa bermain peran dengan menggunakan rubrik penilaian. Hasil analisis data menunjukan adanya peningkatan kemampuan siswa berbicara pada siklus pertama, kedua, dan ketiga. Pada siklus pertama hasil kemampuan rata-rata siswa berbicara adalah rendah, hanya mencapai 54.075. Meningkat menjadi 63.075 pada siklus kedua. Dan menunjukan peningkatan pada siklus ketiga menjadi 70.40. Oleh karena itu dapat disimpulkan bahwa menggunakan teknik role-play dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa berbicara dalam menggunakan ungkapan meminta, memberi, dan menolak pendapat. Kata kunci : Kemampuan berbicara, teknik role-play, dan ungkapan pendapat Abstract : Most of eighth grade students’ SMP Yakhalusti Pontianak have difficulty to follow English lesson especially in learning speaking activity. Therefore, role-play technique was applied to improve students speaking ability in using expressions for asking, giving, and refusing opinion. Classroom action research method was used to solve the problems. This method was applied on 40 students of eighth grade of SMP Yakhalusti Pontianak. The data were collected by using observation table and field note. Collecting the data also completed by using performance test and scoring rubric. The result of data analysis showed there were improvements in students speaking ability from the first cycle, second cycle, and third cycle. Student ability in speaking in first cycle was low, mean score was 54.075. In second cycle become 63.075. Then, in third cycle mean score showed improvement become 70.40. Therefore, it can concluded that using role-play techique can improved students speaking ability in using expression for asking, giving, and refusing opinion. Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study was to develop mulimedia-based materials for teaching and learning English at SMK Negeri 1 Balai. The development of Hot potatoes-based materials adopted research and development study. This study applied ADDIE steps as follows. Firstly, need analysis. The need analysis found that there was a need of multimedia-based materials for teaching and leaning English at SMK Negeri 1 Balai. Secondly, design, the design of the materials was based on need analysis and english subject curriculum. The blue print or lay out of the materials were created in this stage. Thirdly, development. The development involves some author wares, such as hot potatoes application,adobe reader, picture editors and web page maker. The pilot product was created in this stage. fourthly was implementation of the materials. There were 30 students of SMK Negeri 1 Balai were involved in this stage. Based on thier responses, there is norevision on the materials. The last step was evaluation. This stage involved two media-materials experts and a language expert. Pada tahap ini ditemukan bahwa adanya kebutuhan akan bahan ajar berbasiskan multimedia untuk proses pembelajaran pada SMK Negeri 1 Balai. Tahap kedua, Desain bahan ajar ini berdasarkan pada hasil dari analisis kebutuhan dan kurikulum bahasa inggris. layout dari bahan ajar dibuat pada tahap ini. Tahap ketiga yaitu pengembangan. Tahap ini menggunakan beberapa software pendukung, seperti aplikasi hot potatoes, picture editors, dan web page maker. Tahap ini menghasilkan bahan ajar percobaan. Tahap keempat adalah implementasi dari bahan ajar. Tahap ini melibatkan 30 orang siswa SMK Negeri 1 Balai. Berdasarkan respons mereka, bahan ajar ini tidak membutuhkan revisi.  Langkah terakhir adalah evaluasi. Tahap ini melibatkan dua ahli bahan ajar multimedia dan seorang ahli bahasa. Mereka mengevaluasi dan merespon bahwa bahan ajar ini dapat digunakan didalam proses pembelajaran.   Kata kunci: langkah-langkah ADDIE, Bahan ajar berbasis multimedia

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this Classroom Action Research was to improve students’ ability and participation in writing descriptive text through Collaborative Writing Strategy. The research subjects were 38 students from 10 Social-A at Saint Paul Senior High School Pontianak. The researcher emphasized the practice of group discussion and peer-assessment among students. The study showed that the implementation of Collaborative Writing Strategy gave positive implication which effected on learning improvement. Activities in the strategy improved students’ ability and participation in writing descriptive text. Group discussion and peer assessment helped students to generate, organize, and develop their ideas well after working with their group collaboratively. Collaborative Writing Strategy also encouraged students to get engaged more in teaching learning activities. Moreover, students also improved their writing score, which indicated that learning process have run well and have improved individual performance.         Keywords: Collaborative Writing, Descriptive Text, dan  Writing Ability

Abstract

AbstractThe research purpose is to see how far the improvement of students’ narrative writing has been made by using WH-Questions as a guide. The research method that used is a classroom action research and the data were collected by direct observation technique in the teaching learning process through field notes as the tools of research. The research was conducted in two cycles. The first cycle was conducted on 28 October 2011 and the second cycle on 3 November 2011. After conducting the research, the writer got the data which show that WH-Questions increased the students’ narrative writing in the classroom activity. The finding of this research showed that WH-Questions can help students to improve students’narrative writing, it is looked by the score from 58.13 at first cycle and 78.39 at second cycle.Keywords: WH-Questions, narrative writing

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe how the total physical response improves the students achievement in comprehending imperative sentences. The method of this research is classroom action research in which concerned with improving the students comprehension of imperative sentences. The data of this research were collected by performance test and field note. The teacher instructed the students based on the procedure text, then the students showed the physical movement based on what the teacher instructed. The field note was used to observe everything happened in the classroom during the research. The improvement of the students achievement can be seen from the result in every cycle. After collecting and analyzing the data, it was found that total physical response could improve the students achievement in comprehending the imperative sentences. Based on the data, the mean score increased from the first cycle was 58.14; second cycle was 66,88 and the third cycle was 85.29. Shortly, the students had a better English teaching learning process through this activity. Keywords: improving, imperative sentences Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan bagaimana metode respon fisik total meningkatkan pencapaian siswa dalam memahami kalimat perintah. Metode dari penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas yang terfokus pada peningkatan pemahaman siswa pada kalimat perintah. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan melalui tes unjuk kerja dan catatan lapangan. Guru memberikan perintah kepada murid berdasarkan teks prosedur, kemudian siswa menunjukkan gerakan fisik berdasarkan perintah tersebut. Catatan lapangan digunakan untuk mengamati segala hal yang terjadi di ruang kelas selama penelitian berlangsung. Peningkatan pencapaian siswa dapat dilihat dari hasil disetiap siklus. Setelah mengumpulkan dan menganalisis data, ditemukan bahwa metode respon fisik total dapat meningkatkan pencapaian siswa dalam memahami kalimat perintah. Berdasarkan data yang dikumpulkan, nilai rata-rata pencapaian siswa meningkat dari siklus pertama yaitu 58.14; siklus kedua yaitu 66.88 dan siklus ketiga yaitu 85.29, sehingga bisa ditarik kesimpulan bahwa siswa mengalami proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang lebih baik melalui aktifitas belajar dengan metode respon fisik total. Abstract: This research was conducted to: formulate the procedures of teaching speaking that the students need in procedure text; design a Micstraw task to encourage  the students to speak about the procedures of how to create something in English; and know the experts’ perceptions whether the design of a Micstraw task is meaningful, interesting and contextual or not to encourage the seventh grade students to speak about the procedures of how to create something in English. This research was carried out at seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Siantan in academic year 2015/2016.This research is a development research which consists of four phases; analyze, design, develop, and evaluate. The need analysis obtained the information that the students need teaching procedures which are meaningful, interesting and contextual in teaching speaking about the procedures of how to create something. The design of a Micstraw task explained the task designing and task developing. The result of evaluation was 3.25 which was categorized as good. It convinced that a Micstraw task is meaningful, interesting and contextual to be used but it still needs little revision.   Keywords: Straw, Procedure Text, Development Research Abstrak: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk: menyusun prosedur mengajar yang siswa butuhkan di dalam materi teks prosedur; merancang a Micstraw task untuk mendorong siswa berbicara tentang prosedur bagaimana membuat sesuatu dalam bahasa inggris; dan mengetahui persepsi para ahli apakah rancangan tugas Micstraw bermakna, menarik dan sesuai konteks atau tidak untuk mendorong siswa kelas VII untuk berbicara tentang prosedur bagaimana membuat sesuatu dalam bahasa inggris. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada siswa kelas VII SMP negeri 2 Siantan tahun akademik 2015/2016. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian pengembangan yang terdiri dari empat tahapan; analisis, desain, pengembangan, dan evaluasi. Analisis kebutuhan mengamdung beberapa informasi jika siswa membutuhkan prosedur mengajar yang bermakna, menarik, dan sesuai kontek di dalam mengajarkan berbicara tentang prosedur membuat sesuatu. Desain tugas Micstraw menjelaskan tentang mendesain dan mengembangkan tugas. Hasil evaluasi adalah 3,25 yang dikategorikan baik. Jadi, dapat disimpulkan bahwa tugas Micstraw memiliki prosedur yang  bermakna, menarik, dan sesuai konteks untuk digunakan meskipun masih memerlukan sedikit perbaikan.   Kata Kunci: Sedotan, Teks Prosedur, Penelitian Pengembangan
